poetry and musical theater get similar accusations leveled at them in terms of not being realistic, i.e. “no one fucking talks like that” or “people don’t randomly burst into song in real life” and sometimes i just want to take people by the shoulders and say. there are forms of art that are not aiming for perfect realism. are you capable of handling that

one thing nobody tells you about DMing is the more references you have in common, the easier it is. like ok I could explain the mercantile port city you are in and the grimy wrong-side-of-the-river where all the gambling and the theatres and the sex workers are, safely kept away from the seat of government on the nicer side, and how a lot of the violence here is done by the rich visitors rather than by the locals. I could explain all that. Or I could say "You are in Shakespeare's Southwark" and call it a day. that's just easier to say and now, bonus, you also have an idea of how bad it smells.
