Obviously fiction affects reality. Fiction does not affect reality on a 1:1 basis.

People who say "fiction doesn't affect reality" are either proshippers using shorthand to refer to a more nuanced argument, or antishippers strawmanning proship talking points.

Fiction affects reality in the same way that all communication affects reality. It transmits an idea.

It is up to the person who hears the idea-- the person who reads the fiction, who consumes the content-- to evaluate that idea in regard to their own experience, morals, ideals and interests.

Claiming that fiction with problematic or immoral elements will somehow normalize evil, or instantly corrupt the people who read it is reductive and denies the the agency of the reader.

Do you genuinely believe that reading fiction that portrays something you believe is evil in a positive light will suddenly make you go against all of your previous experience and morals?
