a note abt sign language

hello fellow rpers !! my name is kaffi, & i’m here to write abt something i feel v passionately about. i’ve seen that more & more people have started putting SIGN LANGUAGE as a language that their muse masters, & i  think that’s amazing !! sign language is beautiful, it deserves a lot more credit than it does, & it’s always great to see people interested in it !! but, there are also lots of misconceptions abt sign language, & i’m here to clear some of them out. JUST KEEP IN MIND i’m a person with full hearing, so i can’t explain this as well as someone who is deaf / coda / has sl as their first language, & i’m also swedish so my facts will come from my experiences in the swedish sl community, aka the facts might feel a bit off if you’re from another country ! here i go though :

  • SIGN LANGUAGE IS NOT INTERNATIONAL. EVERY COUNTRY/REGION HAS IT’S OWN SIGN LANGUAGE. SO 1) if you put “sign language” as a language your muse knows when you write them, consider specifying the sign language of what country! american sign language? british sign language? japanese sign language? 2) if your character learned sign language in japan, they probably can’t communicate very well with a person who uses american sign language, or canadian sign language, or any other sign language.
  • SIGN LANGUAGE IS AS VALID AS ANY SPOKEN LANGUAGE. you can have deep conversations in sign language, you can teach advanced algebra, you can talk about the meaning of life! the only limits is your knowledge of the language/your imagination! yet in many parts of the world sign language is not ruled a official language because people have a lot of prejudice against sign language & those who depend on it.
  • SIGN LANGUAGE IS MORE THAN JUST HANDS. it’s body, & it’s face. almost all grammar in sign language relies on face & body movement. it is possible to use sign language without it, but it becomes much more difficult for another person to understand.
  • SIGN LANGUAGE TAKES TIME TO LEARN. did your muse have a classmate one time who used sl, but they weren’t best friends? they just had one or two classes in it? then your muse probably knows how to greet someone & the signs for some animals & colors. sl takes time & dedication just as much as a spoken language. please don’t underestimate it. please respect it.
  • SIGN LANGUAGE IS NOT THE SAME AS BABY SIGNS & OTHER VARIATIONS OF THAT. people get signs for support in many ways. some are for helping develop in your first language, some are for you to keep up when you’re hard of hearing, or maybe when find it difficult to use verbal communication sometimes. however, signs used simultaneously with speaking is usually not sign language. the signs are usually modified to become simpler to understand, & none of the sign language’s own grammar is left. there are many variations of this, so make sure you know what it is your muse knows how to use!

that is what i had to say! there is always so much more to learn though, so please do your research, as you do with any other thing you write !! sign language has faced a lot of discrimination since ancient times, & people are still fighting & struggling to educate others & most of all to get the right to even learn & use it, which is crazy since it’s so handy (haha, get it?), practical, fun, & beautiful. that’s what i had to share !! thanks for reading !! ( this is ok to reblog, & if someone feels like i should change something in the text please send me a message )
