It wouldn't take long, Arthur thought. It would never take long. Not long enough. Nothing could be enough in the face of eternity, although that he had been oblivious to when he accepted the fruit of renewed life.
The floorboards creaked underneath his shoes. His step was as brisk as ever. He hadn't changed a day, not since he'd been reborn, resurrected. Not since he'd met her.
Mitsuki couldn't say the same. Wrinkled, with bleary eyes, she turned her head towards him, and smiled a toothless smile.
"Simon…?"
"Yeah, it's Simon." Arthur sat at the edge of the bed. He didn't correct her. She wouldn't understand. "How are you doing, grams? All well?"
"Yeah, darling. All well. Have you seen pops, though?"
"I haven't. Dad's said he went to buy some milk."
"I see… I wonder when Arthur will be back… You look so much like him…"
Arthur laughed a bitter laugh. "I know, grams. I know."
"Simon.. I love you, you know? You keep visiting.. I just wish I could be of more use to you. I can't do anything anymore. I can't go to the park with you, I can't even go to buy the milk myself. I wish Arthur was here. Not that you're not enough, but… I fear it might end soon. I don't want to leave, but I know my time is running out."
Artur's shell of bitterness broke upon hearing these words. He couldn't contain his sadness anymore. If only she was a vampire as well… but she'd refused this choice. She didn't want a taste of eternity like he did. She'd always been content with what she had and in tune with the fact that eventually, her flower would bloom no more. "Grams.. I'll stay with you. Through everything."
ur ever missed me, like I miss him. Not a day goes by when I don't wonder what things would be like if he was still here, you know."
Arthur didn't know what to answer to that. He wished that things didn't have to be like this. That she wouldn't step into eternity without knowing that he was by her side. Not just as Simon, but as himself. Arthur. It was bad enough watching her slowly leaving his life, day by day, hour by hour even, but he also had to live with the fact that he was the one that had taken the love of her life away from her. It was too late now though. The room grew cold, as day bled into dusk. Another day over. How many more would there be?
