this poll is basically "if the walrus wasnt surprising who would be the more surprising" and everyone still said walrus

I'm trying to find a way to make people stop focusing on How Did The Walrus Get Here because that's not the point, it's a pedantic distraction. The question is, which is more surprising- something genuinely magical, or something mundane but removed from it's usual context. Not which is more surprising- a fairy or an equally magical teleporting walrus.

If you can't wrap your head around a walrus getting to your door, it could be a llama. Or an ostrich. Or a moose. Or any other large herbivorous mammal. It doesn't even have to be an animal! What if you opened your door and there was an MRI machine on the doorstep. Or a harpsichord. Or a single giant teacup from the teacup ride at Disney World. It's big, it's weird, it shouldn't be there, but it is a mundane object that, in another context, would make perfect sense.

It's a thought experiment, and what it's really trying to get at is the power of narrative framework. Why is a mundane object which we have no narrative reference for, no way of anticipating what will follow, more emotionally affecting for us than the appearance of something that contravenes our entire understanding of the world, but which we have been well prepared by fiction to understand, for which we have a narrative framework.

I want people to ask *why* the walrus is more surprising, and to do that they have to understand that the walrus is not important.

The thing is, that argument implies that the fairy also doesn't matter, and any remotely fantastical thing would also replace it. Does my door matter?

The reason why people think that the walrus is more surprising is its walrusness! It's the specificities of a walrus, a nigh-imovable object that doesn't live here and has stupid little tusks and doesn't fit into an elevator and has just enough agency to resist a person moving it but not enough to want to be there, that makes it surprising. There's an MRI machine 10 minutes away from my flat. The nearest walrus is hundreds of kilometres away.

Okay, sure, the moose would be about as surprising and wouldn't fit on the continent either, I suppose it's slightly more comparable. Still, I think part of the charm of the fairy/walrus debate is inherently tied to the walrus itself, though I see your point.

Yes! The fairy also doesn’t matter! You could replace it with any instantly unrecognizable impossible thing. Unicorn, giant spider, Freddy Fazbear. All that matters is when you see it, you know that it’s real, and that it’s magic.

No, your door doesn’t matter. “You open the door to see whatever” isn’t actually necessary for the question. It’s just an easy way to say, in this scenario you are in a situation where you are not expecting anything unusual to happen, when a fairy/walrus appears.

The thing is most of that is post hoc justification. I’m trying to explain that the walrus would be surprising anyway, even if you lived in a one story house and later learned the walrus had been carefully transported and deposited there to prank you by trained walrus wrangling professionals. A walrus isn’t intrinsically surprising. Go to the right beach and you’ll find a ton of them. It’s surprising because it’s an animal generally only seen in a specific context, removed from that context and plopped down in a place where you generally expect things to be familiar.

There’s also the fact that the walrus is surprising as a poll option as well! Tumblr is also not the usual context for a walrus. The poll option itself is more surprising than the fairy option.

I agree though, there is specific charm in it being a walrus, I just want to engage with the deeper question and people are so distracted by the logistics of the walrus that they aren’t digging any deeper.

It is fundamentally absurd to be more surprised by a mundane animal in an unlikely location, than a completely impossible fantasy creature. And yet! People are genuinely more surprised by the walrus! I just want to dig into the real why of it.

If you walked into your front yard, would you be more surprised to see Superman mowing your lawn, or a Belgian draft horse on your roof?

If you opened your fridge, would you be more surprised to see a magic crystal full of howling spirits, or a rod of depleted uranium?

Would you be more surprised by the appearance of something unreal but familiar, or something real but unfamiliar?

Now ask why! Forget the how, it doesn’t matter! No matter how convoluted or contrived, it is still possible for a walrus to end up on your doorstep! “I live in an apartment building!” They knocked down a wall and brought it in by crane! “There are no walruses on this continent!” Zoos exist! And people who transport animals professionally! It will never be *more* probable for fairies to exist than for a walrus to get somewhere walruses usually don’t go.

So why does it *feel* more surprising? That’s the actually interesting question here!

I think the context does actually play a pretty big roll in it being surprising though. I personally would find the fairy more strange and surprising, just because I have lived in a world context that believes in the chance of them being real, but I don't currently really believe in them, so seeing one would be very surprising! But that is because I have a context in which they could, and the surprise comes from the confirmation, I know walrus exist, and thus it is less surprising for that fact. But I can also see the sort of inverse applying. If someone very honestly believe that fairies don't exist, and thus have no context for the situations in which they may appear and what that could mean for them should it happen, one suddenly appearing probably wouldn't elicit as much surprise as something they have the full context for its normal place in existence, and seeing it completely removed from it.

Round #whatever. Judge a roo. Electric boogaloo

hey! haven't done these in a while and I have been itching to do these again now that I am finding some motivation to draw

this will be random. basically your character will get judged by whoever I choose. it is a random. might be who I think will fit into judging. idk who knows! I don't know right now

that's basically it! as always judge backs are welcomed but not mandatory

1 character please, btw! almost forgot the most important rule .w.

Still working on her a lot, but how about the reclusive shut in daughter of a way too powerful witch? Cihime is the name, and she loves herself some plants.

"The w-way you seem to describe y-y-yourself... you seem nice. I... am b-b-blind but I also don't want to be rude a-a-and... t-t-t-touch you to... get an idea of your... f-figure...

You like flowers? I l-l-love flowers...! Well... despite being blind... I still t-take care of mine... at least... I'm... h-h-h-hoping they are healthy...

I generally try to tell... by s-s-smell and gently touching them... hoping they aren't w-w-wilting away...

I... think they are m-m-m-magnolia flowers... f-f-from what I c-could recall when I had my sight...

What's... your f-f-favorite? If you want to answer... I don't... w-w-w-want to p-p-pry too much..."

(There has been a massive design overhaul, but she's still the same peep!) "You can touch me if you'd like, until a couple of years ago, my mother was blind in a way as well, so I am used to it. And either way-" She was cut off mid statement by a hearty yawn, but continued as if nothing happened, "-to my understanding, having a good sense for outwards appearances is important to judgement, so if you must see through your fingers, then I do not mind being seen." "I will say, I think your way of judging flower health is good, fragrance and texture are better than sight for detecting a lot of early warning signs for plant health, but I'd love to come see your Magnolias if you are still worried about them." "As for a personal favorite, I'd have to saaaa-" This time the yawn didn't wait to cut her off, but rather stretched the word in an almost singsong manor. "-aaay... I really like royal dahlia for their vibrant shades, but freesia flowers also come in a lot of colors. Not to mention they smell wonderful! I actually make a Jelly out of Freesia and Honeysuckles if you'd want to try it?" "Oh, maybe I'm getting carried away... Hmm... You seem really nice, my mom always says that anyone who can keep plants well deserves respect. Not to mention your speckles are really cute! I'd like to talk more if we could. That being said... I'd rate you a solid... Neat!"

im a jumble of anxiety and fear so im posting this just in case there are other people who feel the same anxiety that i do when it comes to sending other fantroll blogs asks

reblog this if you:

  1. seriously do not mind if someone accidentally asks a repeat question
  2. are fine with out of pocket questions (NOT weird questions, just shit that comes out of nowhere like "hey would [x] enjoy ball pits" or "hi [x] remember to take out the trash")
  3. are fine with kind of "boring" questions ("how are you", "how are the quads", etc)
  4. are okay with asks being sent to any muse on your muse list or page in general

these are all things that keep me from sending asks to people even though i really want to, so know that if you reblog this i will 100% be in your ask box asap

Can yall help me track down a specific comic I've seen on tumblr many times? It's crossed my dash plenty of times so it's popular but I can't find it by searching.

It's about a fairy who sees their friend (her name was something like beni) die in front of them, crushed by a curious human child. The fairy stays by beni's body, imagining her speaking to them, begging them not to leave, even as they slowly starve. They imagine finding and killing the child for her. Eventually they begin to feel guilty about projecting their grief onto beni, knowing the real beni would want them to live.

It's very beautiful and I'd love to see it again.

Boy am I glad I've had a lot of practice digging for sources and reference images. the comic is by the user Hakobore as far as I can tell, and the comic is right here! https://hakobore.tumblr.com/post/675019759539109889/curiosity-killed-my-beia-a-comic-i-did-for-the

No idea if the link will work in a post, but there you go! Hope this helps.
