Hi! I’ve never done this before, or needed to, but this is something that really matters to me - my mom needs help, she’s struggling emotionally and financially right now and is in dire need of money. 5,000$ probably won’t help her buy a house, or help with funeral expenses, but it will make things easier and ease up on stress that’s riding on her.

The English: This is our legendary King Arthur. His bravest knight is named Gawain who cut off a green giants head

The French: That’s cool, but what if his coolest knight was FRENCH and practiced INFIDELITY with the QUEEN

The English: That’s not…

The French: His name is Lancelot.

The English: Okay actually that name frickin rules. Proceed.

The English: Uh France what are you doing to our oc?

The French: Making the downfall of his kingdom come at the hands of Lancelot.

The English: The… French one?

The French: Yeah.

The English: Aight then.

Historians: Hey! Are you two making things up again?

The French and English: *quickly throw their Lancelot/Guinevere fanfics into a bush* No! Real historical figures! What are you talking about???

The idea of King Arthur being the equivalent to our modern day shows/anime is both a little insulting but also hilarious.

It is though. It’s the medieval equivalent of the MCU or Naruto.

The stories of the Knight of the Round Table or Charlemagne’s Paladins were 100% just the medieval Justice League or Avengers.

I was today’s years old when I learned Lancelot and King Arthur ain’t real????

lol no Arthur might have existed but if he did he was a native Briton warlord fighting the Anglo-Saxons that got so mythologized that within everything written about him whatever was originally true in the oral legends about him was lost and overly mythologized by the time a version of his story was first written down in the 500s. The time Arthur supposedly existed was probably around the 200s to 400s because some of his legends involve him or members of his court fighting the remains of the western Roman empire. Lancelot is just an invention by a French poet lol. Chretien de Troyes specifically. Also he was supposedly a lost French nobleman raised by a fairy that lives in a lake so yeah if you dig into the original written legends for more than like ten lines using modern logic you can figure out that they’re not based on real people. Most people don’t read the original source material though so I don’t blame you for not knowing. I think the original poems and compilations are fascinating but I also have a special interest in old literature and studied it in college and know that most people like to read stuff written after 1890 when literature actually Became Good.

Arthuriana has always been reenvisioned. It’s all fanfic. Write your own!

The most historically accurate version of the Arthurian Legends was done by Monty Python. Not a punchline.

@prokopetz on this issue:

Also there’s strong evidence that Arthur was originally Welsh. Arthurian legends are like a multi-country collab project over the course of centuries

It’s sad how much of what is taught in school is useless to over 99% of the population.

There are literally math concepts taught in high school and middle school that are only used in extremely specialized fields or that are even so outdated they aren’t used anymore!

I took calculus my senior year of high school, and I really liked the way our teacher framed this on the first day of class.

He asked somebody to raise their hand and ask him when we would use calculus in our everyday life. So one student rose their hand and asked, “When are we going to use this in our everyday life?”

“NEVER!!” the teacher exclaimed. “You will never use calculus in your normal, everyday life. In fact, very few of you will use it in your professional careers either.” Then he paused. “So would you like to know why should care?”

Several us nodded.

He picked out one of the varsity football players in the class. “You practice football a lot during the week, right Tim?” asked the teacher.

“Yeah,” replied Tim. “Almost every day.”

“Do you and your teammates ever lift weights during practice?”

“Yeah. Tuesdays and Thursdays we spend a lot of practice in the weight room.”

“But why?” asked the teacher. “Is there ever going to be a play your coach tells you use during a game that requires you to bench press the other team?”

“No, of course not.”

“Then why lift weights?”

“Because it makes us stronger,” said Tim.

“Bingo!!” said the teacher. “It’s the same thing with calculus. You’re not here because you’re going to use calculus in your everyday life. You’re here because calculus is weightlifting for your brain.”

And I’ve never forgotten that.

THIS.

When it’s taught right, learning math teaches you logic and how to organize your brain, how to take a problem one step at a time and make sure every step can bear weight before you move to the next one.  Most adults don’t need to know integrals, but goddamn if I don’t wish everyone making arguments on the internet understood geometric proofs.

Scientific concepts broaden our understanding of how the world is put together, which does not mean that most adults ever really understand how light is refracted through a lens or why spinning copper wire creates electricity–and they don’t need to.  But science classes in general are meant to teach the scientific method: how to make observations and use them to draw conclusions, how to test those conclusions, how to be wrong and grow stronger from it.

History isn’t about dates and names of battles, it’s about people, patterns, things we’ve tried before and ought to learn from.  It’s about how everything is linked, how changing one circumstance can lead to changes in fifty others, cascading infinitely.  Literature is about critical thinking, pattern recognition, learning to listen to what somebody is saying and decide what it means to you, how you feel about it, and what you want to do with it.

Some facts matter: every adult should know how to read a graph, how global warming works, some of the basic themes and symbols that crop up in every piece of fiction.  But ultimately, content is less important later in life than context.

The good thing is, students who learn the content are likely to pick up at least some of the context, some of the patterns of thinking, even if they don’t realize it.  (The unfortunate thing is how the current educational system prioritizes content so much that a lot of students, and a lot of adults, don’t see the point in learning either, and teachers are overworked and held to standardize test grading scales such that it’s hard for them to emphasize patterns of thinking over rote memorization, etc etc etc, but that is a whole different discussion.)

thank u <3

It’s my grandpa’s birthday next week and he said “I don’t want to be 85” and my grandmother, his wife of 59 and a half years, said “well your only alternative is to die”, I can’t believe how affectionate they are

I was having lunch with them today and my grandpa started throwing napkins at my grandmother, and she balled it up and looked all set to throw it back but then she put it down and said “I will not throw it because I was brought up properly, you were dragged” she has spent ¾ of her life with this man

I thought I’d let you know how they’ve been getting on during lockdown, so here’s some of the FaceTime conversation from today:

“My goodness, the way technology is advancing - in 20 years we’ll be able to shake hands through the screen!”

“Rex, I don’t think we’ll be here in 20 years.”

“Well you make your own plans, I shall only be 109.”

Got identical asks from two different blogs with two different fundraisers on them, dont donate to these unless you can find more information about them to verify theyre real

I'm glad other people are posting about this cos the same thing happened to me

Honestly if you received a msg like this coming from a blog with nothing but a fundraiser (and similar fundraisers, which is also very odd) you should probably ignore it. Neither of these blogs replied when I asked why I received the same msg from three different blogs for for 2 different fundraisers

It appears that some accounts are duplicating fundraisers word for word and reposting them with new payment information.

Reverse image searching the photos if you're on desktop may help find the original source

Reblogging this again because I did a little digging and found a pattern of similar blogs making distinct, separate fundraisers using the same PayPal accounts

There is no way to direct funds from multiple donation posts into one PayPal.me link and know which payment was meant for which fundraiser, so this is clearly a scam - the OPs don't care which fundraiser gets the money because the fundraisers aren't real (they're probably stolen from other platforms like Facebook)

obviously if I provide a link Tumblr will hide this reply but most of the posts on this blog are about this phenomenon. I've made something of a masterpost listing all the blogs involved so please check it out before you donate or boost a fundraiser from someone you don't know

I'd recommend reporting these blogs since they are demonstrably fraudulent

Oh hey I got some of these! It didn't add up so I ignored it.

ok but if bruce wayne somehow came upon zuko fresh out of banishment he would lose his mind.

black hair? check. bad parent(s)? check. trauma? double check.

bruce: how’d you get your scar?

zuko: my dad got mad at me for saying that killing people is wrong so he lit my face on fire and banished me.

bruce, vibrating with excitement, already pulling adoption papers from his utilility: that’s terrible. how do you feel about capes.

Zuko: Do you mind if I wear this blue demon mask?

Bruce: *sniff, tear in his eye* Not at all.

*Zuko fighting the Joker*

J: "wan na kno w h ow i go t thes e sc ar s"

Z: *rips off mask* i don't give a fuck

I’m still stuck at the “batman has adoption papers in his utility belt”.

“Quick, it’s time to use the Bat-adoption papers!”

Bat-option papers

Okay, but you’re missing the best part of this.

Alfred and Iroh complimenting each other on tea while they discuss their overly dramatic children.

iroh: once, i told zuko that he needs to work on his inter turmoil. he screamed at me that he had no such inner turmoil, and then proceeded to go to a cliff during a thunderstorm to scream at God to strike him with lightning

alfred: master bruce and i have that interaction at least three times per week.

I see your "Alfred and Iroh as tea bros" and raise you "Alfred and Iroh as tea rivals"

Consider

Iroh: you too must learn patience. Boiling the water ruins the delicate flavor of the white jade
Alfred: oh I'm dreadfully sorry - for some reason I expected this tea to have TEA in it

(later)

Alfred: *aggressively laying out full tea service with milk, lemon, sugar, and, just to drive his point in, jam*
Iroh: *dying inside*

excellent addition

hey bruce spent a lot of his bat-study abroad in the far east and has kind of a weeb weapon collection so proposal, what if Bruce appreciates Iroh’s tea

while Zuko is enthusiastic about cream and sugar

further fueling their dad-figures’ passive-aggressive rivalry?

You had me at Zuko vs. Joker, I was crying by the Eastern vs. Western tea service

Wait a minute. Batman and Zuko have the same arch-nemesis.

Me meeting a genie: Okay, so my first wish is for 1000 dollars a day, deposited to my bank account without any way of tracing it to anything illegal. I want this money to come from the ten richest people in America (100 dollars each), withdrawn under the guise of nebulous, random purchases and surcharges. It would probably be best to split the money into a myriad of smaller fees, though, to reduce the likelihood of anyone noticing. Got all that?

Genie: um

Me, continuing on without a care: For my SECOND wish, I want you to give me the ability to learn any given phoneme, so that I can learn to pronounce new languages perfectly. If you're willing, it'd be nice if it were a little easier to memorize new languages too, but if that's not cool, I'm perfectly fine doing all the legwork myself I mostly just want to be capable of pronouncing things correctly.

Genie, now staring at me like I'm insane: ......okaaayyy?....

Me: For my third wish. I want to always have great ideas for gifts for people. Every birthday, every holiday, I want to be able to come up with something they'd really like, with enough time to actually get it for them.

Genie, just staring at me

Me: I can provide you with a written document if that would help.

“Why do people like a character who’s committed war crimes but hate this other character just because they’re annoying” because it’s fiction Susan, and being annoying in fiction is a greater sin than being a supervillain, because it won’t make me want to read about them. It isn’t difficult to understand

Just wanted to clear this thing up

Friendly reminder that if I haven’t answered your ask the same day, it means either:

  • I want to treasure that ask forever
  • I dont feel up to social interaction
  • I didnt have time, and ended up forgetting about it

What it does NOT mean:

  • I dont like getting asks
  • You’re bothering me by sending asks

SAME APPLIES FOR UNANSWERED TAG GAMES!

SAME applies for unanswered DMs

This! I have so many I need to reply to. I love you all.

why is my teacher roleplaying with me in a formal email

*pulls you closer* youre failing trigonometry

Because millennials are now adults with teaching jobs, and we don’t consider the “stage direction in asterisks” thing to be specific to roleplaying; it’s just a way of inserting body language into online written communication.
