i cant get over the king charles portrait. they made that thing to age in his place. that painting hangs in the house of a too-friendly family you find in the post apocalyptic wasteland who inexplicably has a ready supply of fresh meat. if mario jumped into that painting he wouldn't find a charming platformer he would be flayed and hanged like a medieval criminal by an unseeable force in a droning red void. that painting is a color blindness test for people who work in IT but believe in the divine right of kings. that painting is going to weep the sequel to blood. after he dies charles is gonna crawl outta that thing like sadako.

this painting is what ultrakill speedrunners see when they close their eyes. if you showed this to the romans who flogged jesus theyd think this painting is excessive. this painting is the blood cavern from space funeral. it's the color out of space.

jegus tapdancing christ it is actually that bad

So the artist is Jonathan Yeo. His statement:

"The vivid colour of the glazes in the background echo the uniform’s bright red tunic, not only resonating with the royal heritage found in many historical portraits but also injecting a dynamic, contemporary jolt into the genre with its uniformly powerful hue / providing a modern contrast to more traditional depictions. The butterfly approaching King Charles's shoulder in the portrait adds a layer of narrative depth, symbolising both his known advocacy for environmental causes and his personal transformation. "

Listen. Buddy. I hate to be mean to an artist but when i first saw this I physically recoiled. If this had been done in another style and the background still matched the color of the coat I don't think I would have liked it but... this looks like it was composed of raw meat. Dude. WHY.

(I went and looked up the artist's work, and his style does overall involve a lot of this sort of heavily textured use of color. But none of the others hit me this way. He has one of Idris Elba that's a bust portrait and he isn't wearing any clothes, and the background is the same color as his skin, but like... there's more contrast in the portrait shading so it doesn't feel like Idris Elba disappears into it, and it's just not as upsetting a shade.)

LOOK at this thing. It's even more vivid in person, and it's HUGE.

Actually I'll say that the contrast between Charles's head and the rest seems like it's better in person. But it's still overwhelming and kind of upsetting.

Thank you for the explanation, and the artist's name! I couldn't tell if the bloody overtones were deliberate or not, so I looked up some more of Jonathan Yeo's art for context - and I'm glad I did. He's worked in a lot of mediums, but let's focus on the portraits, because they're fucking great...

I love these. Zoom in; each one is technically masterful but also very empathetic, delicately filling in exactly the minimum details necessary to convey the sitter's character and humanity.

So let's compare the portraits of Idris Elba, Helena Bhonam Carter, and Dennis Hopper:

To the portrait of Sgt Geoffrey Pattinson:

Okay so the blood-red staining every inch of a warmonger's portrait is 100% intentional and means exactly what we all think it means, Yeo just can't say that out loud.

Propaganda

Rita Moreno (Singin' in the Rain, West Side Story)—She’s an EGOT, an absolute legend for how she navigated her career as a woman of color in the fifties and sixties. Her performance as Anita in West Side Story is why I go back to that movie so many times. She is an icon and she is the moment.

Marlene Dietrich (Shanghai Express, Witness for the Prosecution, Morocco)—Bisexual icon, super hot when dressed both masculine and feminine, lived up her life in the queer Berlin scene of the 1920s, central to the 'sewing circle' of the secret sapphic actresses of Old Hollywood, refused lucrative offers by the Nazis and helped Jews and others under persecution to escape Nazi Germany, the love of my life

We are in the quarterfinals of the Hot & Vintage Movie Women Tournament. All other polls in this bracket can be found here. Propaganda is not my own and is on a submission basis. Please reblog with further support of your beloved hot sexy vintage woman.

I just watched that s7 episode where Rose, Dorothy and Sophia will have to move out if Blanche doesn't make them co-owners of the house and oh.... oh my god. I knew Blanche's grand gesture would hit hard, but Dorothy's talk to Rose before then?? Giving her an excuse for why she has to say, only to shrug that off and softly tell her the truth ("we love you") and proceeding to tell the permit guy that they're family!! They love each other so much & they can't be separated!! Rose's face throughout the whole thing!! It's so much

#i fear this borders on making no sense but OHH the LOVE they have for each other#it's so so clear and they acknowledge it too???#out loud?? to a stranger?? ;-;#i will say this episode was made at least 10x more painful with the knowledge of how it's all going to end in ±20 episodes#blanche makes the girls co-owners because she trusts they'll stay together forever#because the thought of parting with them is even worse than the thought of losing (part of the) ownership of her house!!#she places full trust in her girls because she loves them even more than this place that holds memories of george#& because she trusts them to treat that part of her life (and their life together) with respect#and then dorothy ends up leaving#i just-#i CAN'T#blanche selling that house to them *legally* bound their lives and futures together#they signed a contract!! excuse me for making the comparison but what isn't marriage if not a love recognised legally!!#(it's a religious thing too i know. but these were the 90s! marriage was becoming more and more of a tax benefit lol)#and uh#they signed that contract to get to *live together* without consequences#because they love each other and can't bear to be separated! they're a family!!#and then dorothy leaves?? yeah no i'm FINE#(side note but rose made a comment about having to sleep on top of each other#and by her very serious 'it's fine! we all wear pyjamas!' i'm inclined to believe they do in fact share a bed frequently)#the golden girls#anyway off to bed now#i had to write this down before i exploded sjfjdj

One of my FAVOURITE ship dynamics to write or read in fics is when two characters are basically already a couple but they just haven’t realised it yet. They call each other up at like 3am, they cuddle, they sleep in the same bed, they fall asleep in each other’s arms, they hold hands, they practically live together, they talk about having a ~ special connection ~, they just haven’t actually kissed or done the do or talked about their feelings yet so they’re still both like “but I just don’t know if they like me in that way!!”

Less slow burn and more two idiots standing around literally on fire from page one but not noticing until page two hundred.

I will be honest guys, the Red portrait of king Charles is gorgeous asdfghjkl

it's a bad portrait. Like. Objectively. It does the opposite of what's intended. It looks like the painter is insulting him. If it was in a contemporary gallery with no context you would see it immediately as the ambivalent criticism of Charles's reign, how he fades into the overwhelming red background as a tiny little figure, small and insignificant, insufficient for the clothes he's wearing. It reminds my of Goya's portraits, how they were so 'realistic' that they ended up making these great figures look pathetic to the viewer. So these are our rulers?

the sheer novelty. the surprise and shock, the kinda cunt it's serving for no reason. I. I love it. It's an incredible portrait by Jonathan Yeo. By the sheer fact that Charles, the man, is impossible to portray as greater than man because he's just such a nothingburger of a dude. So a portrait made to make him look huge and interesting made him be swallowed in red brushstrokes. The butterfly, that reminded me immediately of " we will all laugh at guilded butterflies", draws more attention than him. It looks like an omen. It looks like a warning in all this red. Something is not right here.

This is the best royal portrait ever 10/10

This is a painting of a monarch whose individual personality and even bodily presence are a mere footnote within the legacy of bloodshed that built the throne he occupies. This is the only way it's possible to depict him. It's a photograph of his soul

no more ‘vampires who correct history books’

more vampires who don’t remember more vampires saying ‘i don’t fucking know man, google it’ more vampires not remembering important historical figures more vampires not recalling centuries worth of history more vampires saying ‘ that was at least 300 years ago, how the FUCK could i remember that detail?’ more vampires whose brains work like human brains

More vampires who 300 years later can’t remember what was the truth and what was the lie they told to get out of trouble.

More vampires who are like, “I don’t know, man, I spent most of that decade in an opium den.”

More vampires who weren’t paying attention because they didn’t think it would be important.

More vampires who don’t know because there was lot of conflicting gossip and they don’t want to point any fingers.

More vampires who are just bad at dates. “Back in 1620, or was it 1645, wait, what year is it now?”

More vampires who were on a totally different continent when it happened, so get off their back and stop asking them questions already.

YES to all of this but also consider: vampires who only remember the most trivial stuff.

“Oh yeah, the only thing I remember about the American Revolution was this nice candlemaker I met sometime, and she was wearing this really cute red shawl…”

“Uhhh I don’t remember much about the fall of Rome but there was this one fucking cobblestone right outside the coliseum…”

Also consider: vampires who realize three or four hundred years after the fact that they knew someone famous.

Just sits up in bed one night screaming “THAT WAS GEORGE GODDAMN WASHINGTON”

Pin curling attempt #2

  • Started out by trying to follow a setting pattern. Sort of stuck to it, but oh my god this is difficult
  • Popped 3 foam rollers in there just to see how those will turn out (I have a feeling they'll dry less quickly than the pin curls, but we'll see!)
  • My arms are sore now
  • I really really have to work on my pin curling skills. The ends keep popping out now and it's annoying me haha
  • Anyway, considering I usually get confused if I try to so much as braid my hair, I think I did an okay job haha
  • This probably isn't something I should be doing on <2 hours of sleep, at least not with my current skill level

Update after brushout

  • I now look like my hair exploded in the 1960s. Not necessarily the look I was going for, but I'll take it (going to dig up my 60s clothes for today I guess lol)
  • There is a lot more shape to this than last time, so there's some improvement!!
  • Still have to decide how I want to style this though
  • Miiight've used a little too much hairspray. We'll see
  • (I got a new one and it's a little stronger than the one I used last time, so I probably should've used less)
  • It's incredibly humid today so I'm curious to see how that might impact my hair!
  • Going to try to put it up into (dry) semi-pin curls tonight to see if I might be able to keep my hair sort of curled tomorrow as well
  • Unexpected side effect: I have to plan my outfits a lot better now to make sure I don't look like I'm wearing a costume lol
