so, that's rather interesting.

as of writing this, the admins/mods on the other server haven't reached an agreement, and rather wait for them to give us the opportunity to opt ourselves out from something that should've been opt-in in the first place, many authors and users of ao3 are now starting to tag their fics in an attempt to dissuade their use.

the ot4 server came up with a tag that hopefully (with ao3's approval) will become canonical soon: "Do Not Use For Miraculous Fanworks Book Club", and it is being used by authors who aren't even apart of our server, as well.

i've got a lot of fics to slap this tag on, but i'll do it, just for an attempt to stay away from a server that poorly handles events that should be treated with care.

the fact that we have to tag my fics in a way so that they aren't touched is... upsetting. the fact that the admins have no update, even after a week, is rather impressive. i hope they come to a conclusion soon. i hope they understand that what they did was ridiculous, and that it really puts it in their mind that this was a serious breach of privacy and trust.

this mess is ugly. there's still damage to fix in my own server with what you caused; many of the writers there are scared to post, wondering if they'll get mocked or ridiculed over what they write. this was insensitive. who knows how big your outreach actually was with this behavior.

do better.

I saw this tag recently, and I’m apparently too far removed from fandom to know what the drama is.  I want people to read my stuff.  Is there a reason I shouldn’t want it read by this book club?  Asking sincerely.

In this situation, the book club in question

  • didn't require the person recommending the fic to have read the fic beforehand,
  • the admin in charge of book club (who was also the one who recommended this fic without reading it) didn't delete or push back against harsh criticism made about the fic,
  • the author of the fic didn't know their work was participating in book club and wasn't a member of the server, and isn't a native English speaker,
  • when questioned about how this book club discussion was handled, fell back on "it's publicly published on AO3, therefore it's fair game for anyone to use and comment in any way"

Personally, I don't care what people say about my work, I have a thick skin. But fanworks are created out of love for free, and to see a fandom server not shut down harsh criticism of a work is really disappointing. Their claim in doing book club is to encourage discussion about fics and talking about how things are written and can be written better, but these things can be done without being mean to someone behind their back. In fact, they do encourage authors who are in the server to participate in book club when their fic is selected, so they are willing to defend their own members from harsh criticism but not someone who isn't a server member until called out about it.

Their original solution to the issue, after ignoring it at first, was to require authors to opt out of book club, including authors not on the server. This is obviously untenable and ridiculous, so several creators pushed back, requesting it be opt-in and to otherwise contact authors by comment or social media to let them know their work was being considered. I feel like, in fandom, this is at least a respectable way for someone to choose not to have their work critiqued if they don't want to.

I feel like creators aren't being listened to, that we're all forced to accept that people will be mean about what we create, but this is an organized server that is hosting an organized event treating creators like we don't need to be respected, which is so odd for a server that promotes creation.

Sorry for venting a little, but it's just frustrating.

I cannot speak for my moderators and want to make it clear these views are my own and not necessarily that of the Miraculous Writers’ Circle as a whole, if you take issue with this please argue with me and not them. I will also not be discussing this on the server (save for perhaps maybe sharing the recommended opt-out tag)

But regarding the Miraculous Fanworks Book Club drama.

What. The. Fuck.

I run a server. We are not perfect and I don’t pretend we are. Do you know what we are? We’re encouraging. We’re supportive. We boost creators and cheer them on in their efforts to make fanworks (art, fanfiction, dolls, even textile crafts). Some of us are posting works online for the first time. Some of us are coming back from years away from creating because of life or kids or mental health issues. Some of us are just super nervous. Fandom is an escape and it should be a pleasant experience. We understand that we have a position of authority.

If you can’t say anything nice, don’t say anything at all.

Creators of fanworks do not owe you anything. They’re creating something they work hard on, for free, because they love the show and the characters. To abuse your authority as a large server and tear into authors is awful enough but to do so without knowing their circumstances or anything about them is horrific. To react to the criticism of your awful behaviour with a basic “tough luck, it’s on the internet and we’re allowed to be mean if we want” is truly low. To force people who aren’t on your server to opt-out is shameless promotion of your server in face of bad behaviour. To shut down your feedback form the moment you receive complaints, low.

I am personally fucking lousy at taking criticism on my art. I’m working on it. But I know nasty ao3 comments have made me want to delete my entire library on occasion, and it’s only due to lovely, supportive fellow creators in this fandom that I haven’t. You actively come after members of my server then I am going to bat for them. I might be lousy at defending myself but I will defend the creators who do not deserve this kind of treatment from anyone.

Your cruel attitude is already making people hesitate to post and as such the fandom is actively missing out on amazing works from people terrified of reactions like this. People who hadn’t previously are locking and tagging their works to try keep you out. The damage you have done on multiple servers, to many creators, has been brought to your attention and you do not seem to care even when provided with the obvious opt-in solution. People are having to join your server just to defend themselves.

And as you shut down all criticism of this awful behaviour and make it nearly impossible for anyone not on your server to interact with you about the matter, yes, I’m calling you out on main.

Listen to the feedback you are receiving and do better.

(The ao3 tag being recommend is “do not use for miraculous fanworks book club” and my MLB works are tagged as such, I abhor that we have to make a statement to say “do not be mean to me, you don’t know anything about me” rather than just expecting basic empathy but I encourage you to use it)

Don’t act like you’re going to listen to her whale stories forever and then tell her to stop not even after a year. If you’re going to hurt her like that, you shouldn’t start anything at all. I’m telling you this now, if you think your feelings are temporary, don’t be nice to her. My feelings aren’t temporary!
