My therapist just told me my problem is that I need to write more fanfiction.

This sounds fake but the logic behind it is actually really interesting? She said obsession with a new fandom triggers quick dopamine release when we consume all this related content--it's easy and addictive.

What we're NOT getting is that 'slow dopamine' that's more sustainable and engaging. That's the kind we get from DOING things that take effort but are ultimately rewarding.

So like, she suggested that writing fic and making fanart are ways to balance the quick dopamine of watching a show/reading fic with the slow dopamine of working at something that takes effort.

Moral of the story is you should engage in the process of creation around your favorite things. You'll feel better for it.

Tag some people you want to get to know better

Thank you @dragodina for tagging me :D

Song stuck in my head:

The last song I listened to

last song I listened to:

Traitor - Olivia Rodrigo

I listen to the album in the car, because I find it funny to imagine how dramatic some people can get about break-ups. Like it's not that deep. It just didn't work out because you had different things in mind for your relationship. You're both young, so move on.

But I think it is also a very valid coping mechanism to write songs like that or listen to songs like that when you just had a break-up. It all just feels way more dramatic then.

three favourite foods:

Chili sin/con carne, Moussaka, Käsespätzle

Last thing I googled:

cardgames.io/cribbage/

Because I need something to do on the bus ride home

Dream trip:

Stockholm 💕 to visit my girlfriend

Anything I want right now:

To be with my girlfriend and to be there for her.

fruit-in-jars 101 by stacynguyen

“What is jam? What makes something authentically jam? Can bacon really be made into jam?

It was all very Existentialist.

The answer to those questions is a bit complicated and non-definitive. The U.S. FDA has defined jam and jelly in very specific and mathematical terms (such-and-such percentage of juice to fruit to water to sugar = jam/jelly); it also uses jam and preserve interchangeably, for the most part. While interesting, the FDA’s definitions did not matter much to me because the FDA wasn’t really using the terms in the way that we usually use the terms. Also, the FDA wasn’t comprehensive in its definitions. It didn’t tackle other fruit spreads like marmalades or curds, for instance.

The more I looked into, the more I thought, dude, this information would make a good infographic.”

my brother had a brilliant idea that i wanted to share with other people who have four-legged family members: he trained our two cats to go directly to the door when they hear the fire alarm.

obviously at first the fire alarm sent them scrambling for cover, but he started slowly by giving them treats whenever it went off, when someone burned food or forgot to open the fireplace flu. he then progressed to calling them to the door to offer treats immediately after the alarm went off. and it actually wasn't too long before the cats voluntarily started going to the door upon hearing the alarm.

i think this was genius because in the event of a real emergency we know exactly where the cats will be and we will not have to waste precious time trying to find them to rescue them. i think this method would work equally well with dogs and probably other free-roaming pets such as rabbits, ferrets, etc. and i certainly encourage others to give it a shot!

issue: the kittens are still trying to learn words. gus knows his name and daisy knows hers, but they don’t seem to quite grasp that when I say “babies!” im referring to both of them.

hypothesis: “babies” is too similar to “daisy” and they’re getting confused

test: start saying “gamers” instead

Outcome: they’re understanding it and it’s hysterically funny

me, calling down the hall from stirring a can of cat food: LET’S GO, GAMERS

the kittens:

Yes please show us the gamers

here’s the gamers! Daisy is on the left and August is on the right! i spent 45 minutes trying to get this shot

shoutout to the guy in charge of the train station at my hometown, who doesn’t limit himself to announcing trains but also:

  • comments on interesting birds he sees on the platform
  • gives completely unofficial weather reports on what he thinks the day is going to be like
  • refers to very crowded trains as ‘friendly trains’
  • regularly congratulates everyone on having gotten up on time on Monday mornings
  • basically seems to use the tannoy system to amuse himself and try and brighten up everyone’s morning commute
  • refers to himself as ‘the fat controller’
