In honor of tonight’s series finale of Wynonna Earp, I want to take a minute to talk about the show. I was very late to getting into the show as it aired live (as in, final season late), but what I found was a show that was funny and fantastical, as well as emotional and dramatic.
And possibly more importantly for me, it felt like it was filmed from the female gaze more than pretty much any other genre show than Outlander, and portrayed the women as layered people rather than idealizing or demonizing them.
Now, did I find a show that’s absolutely perfect? Definitely not, but I found myself truly enjoying the journey once I went back and started at the beginning (thanks, Netflix!), and if I hadn’t already known how invested I was in binge-watching, I certainly would have known when I was crying my way through the second half of the Season 2 finale!
I watch a lot of TV for my job, so shows don’t always pack as much of an emotional punch as they would have ten years ago, but Wynonna Earp has absolutely worked on an emotional and character level, even if the plot got a little bit overly bonkers from time to time.
I was late to board the Wynonna Earp train, but it sure was fun once I started, and hopefully the finale will deliver the happy endings that the characters deserve.
