FYF Fest | GRIMES

One word to describe Grimes’ FYF performance: LEGENDARY. From her moves to her infectious stage presence, we couldn’t help but feel enamored by this talented woman. Later on in the night Grimes even brought out rapper, Aristophanes, who jammed through SCREAMS, and kept us dancing throughout the night.

I forgot why, when and how I fell in love with photography. 

Recently I’ve been on Vans Warped Tour teaching a class about photography and touring. In Orlando last week Lindsey Byrnes, my favorite photographer, came into speak in my class. She asked my students what inspires them to be a photographer and what motivates them. She explained that she is motivated by love and as I listened to every student in the circle explain why they love taking photos, it really hit me that I’ve completely lost that spark.

I’ve been touring non-stop for the last few years and though it has been amazing it has been creatively exhausting. I never take photos for me anymore.

I realized that when I started picking up cameras it was solely for the fact that I wanted to capture what I was experiencing and I have not done that since I started touring. Don’t get me wrong, I am thankful to get to capture the lives of artists all around the world. But I have forgotten about capturing my own moments and memories. 

I purchased a Fujifilm XT-1 with a 35mm 1.4 for this South American tour with Pierce the Veil as my first big attempt to be selfish with photography again. To remind myself that it’s okay to be selfish with my art because it’s mine. It’s okay to take time for myself in my art because it’s mine. Do not ever forget this. I am challenging myself to keep this camera with me and document how I feel, what I see, where I am and who I meet so I never forget this amazing part of my life.

I no longer have the excuse of, “I don’t want to carry my expensive gear around with me incase something happens.” 

Hold me to this because today felt completely refreshing.
