The human mind is a beautiful and frightening place. Be sure to have a guide.

I could fix him. I could make him worse. Good for you. I could gently take the weapon out of his shaking, blood-soaked hand and hold him until he finally believes that he doesn't have to be defined by all the ways the world has hurt him. Then we could ruin the lives of everyone who has ever treated him like he's a monster who doesn't deserve love.

one of the most important things, perhaps the most important thing I have learned in my life is that nice people can fuck each other up in monstrous ways. people can be bone deep kind and loving and self reflective and still lash out under pressure. people can be earnestly neighbourly and charitable and hospitable and generous and still find themselves in situations where they become selfish. people can be well meaning and easygoing and gregarious and hold deep seated opinions that turn them into vicious little bullies under the right conditions. nobody is just one thing, and nobody stays one way. every person is a kaleidoscope and they will surprise you. you will surprise yourself. it's not a warning and it's not a judgement and it's not an excuse, and it's certainly not a reason to stop trying or to stop trusting. it is just a fact.

[To friends who've RP'd with me before: because Elsbeth is in her own canon now, I've made all in-character posts prior to the modern revision private to avoid confusion (and frankly, embarrassment, since some of my writing back then was.... let's just say there was room for improvement).

If anyone needs to refer to one of the stories for any reason, let me know and I can link you directly or un-private the associated thread.]

Bookstore owner and glamoured-over ancient dragon Yue (@bloodoftheemperor) has some artifacts he needs to recover. How convenient for him, then, that the newest resident of his town, having recently become an employee at his shop, is a developing telekinetic! (This is separate canon from previous interactions between Beth and Yue; both characters have been modified and placed in a setting of their own, which means their acquaintance starts anew as well.)

so when a doctor spends 30 minutes performing CPR and revives someone they're "a hero" and it's "a miracle they could come back after being dead that long" but when I spend 6 months synthesising new organs to bring them back after the doctors failed it's "horrifying to witness" and "a crime against nature itself" and "technically graverobbing but none of the laws cover it so we're not entirely sure what to charge you with". Typical

It's half an hour before the Scrolls and Scales bookstore closes for the day. He's tasked himself with pulling books from the shelves for orders to be completed the next day. He catches sight of one of his newly hired employees, recalling something he might have seen earlier.

"Elsbeth. A moment, please?" His tone is calm as he catchers her attention, pausing in his task face her as he speaks again.

"May I speak to you once closing tasks have been completed? I'd like to ask you something." Keen brown eyes peer at her behind the round glasses perched on his nose.

"I'm honestly just relieved that you're not mad at me." She let out a tiny, nervous laugh, straightening the front of her dress. Despite her efforts, the wrinkles in the skirt marked where she'd gripped the fabric. "I don't really know the rules of this place, and I haven't learned what is acceptable to reveal in public among others who are... different. Anyway!" She brightened, and the sweet mask was back in place. "My ability may be new, and a little unwieldy, but I'm willing to be of help if I can. What do you need done?"

"I promise you're not in any trouble, but I am rather curious..." He should just get to the point.

"How did you keep it from falling? Not physically, from what I saw?" He leans a bit closer to her, hoping that he's not coming across as being nosy.

"Did you use some sort of magic to save it?" His tone and expression are curious. And perhaps a tad calculating as well.

Horror and chagrin flashed across her expression in successive waves, and the set of her shoulders tensed uncomfortably. It was the most unguarded he'd seen since she'd started working here, and with visible effort, she attempted to tame the embarrassed grimace into something more neutral.

"So... you did see that." She certainly didn't sound happy that he had, and she twined fingers into the fabric of her skirt, tugging uneasily in her discomfort. Indeed, he could have easily missed the incident; on her first day, she'd brushed past the teapot and her elbow had caught on its ornate handle, sending it and its lid careening toward the wood floor. Under any other circumstances, the ceramic would have ended up in scattered pieces, but Elsbeth had thrust out a hand in desperation, and right before the expected impact, vessel and lid instead halted inches from the floor, hanging suspended as though by wires, before gently settling on the wood, intact and unharmed.

"I just... cushioned it a little," she said apologetically. "It shouldn't have happened in the first place, and I'm sure it was priceless, and I had to make a decision fast..."

She still hadn't explained what exactly she'd done, though.

Maybe he’s shouldn’t have brought this up after all. They weren’t exactly the closest of friends and she’d only started working of him a little while ago. This had likely been a terrible idea, but he didn’t have much of a choice but to commit now.

“I did. Rather impressive, if that helps.”

One ebony brow raised in response to her words. He could understand that she seemed quite nervous talking about what she’d done. There were plenty of people just as secretive about themselves. Himself included.

Still...

“You just...cushioned it a little?” To say he didn’t believe her was putting it lightly.

“If you’re worried about your job, don’t be. Far be it from me to fire someone from using magic to help.” A reassuring smile replaces the doubtful look. Or at least he hopes that’s what it looks like.

“Accidents happen and I’m grateful for you doing what you did. I really am just curious.”

She smiled sheepishly. "Uh, well... it's not something I like to have people know, about me. It's gotten me into a lot of trouble before, and I've only just moved here, and..." Putting a hand in front of her mouth, she cleared her throat, still uncomfortable but less flustered now. "Sometimes I forget that I don't have to hide it in this town. It's not magic, really. I don't know what it is, properly. But.... I can move things, without touching them. It's not very precise, I'm afraid. Like using a bulldozer to pour a glass of wine. I'm trying to refine it so that I can manipulate things more delicately, but at least it's enough to catch and push things."

His new hire, petite and delicate in a pleated sundress, moves with deliberate grace, lowering an armful of books and turning her head to look at him, and only a keen observer would notice the flash of panic, immediately covered and pushed out of sight like an unsightly bit of clutter, in her hazel eyes. "Of course; I just need to finish organizing these titles. Is something wrong, Yue?" She gives him a smile that's almost believable, too bright to be genuine and too sweet to be innocent.

He watches her, though a moment later he meets her smile with one of his own.

"Not at all. Just a simple request. We'll call it...professional curiosity," he responded with a wave of his hand.

"I'll leave you to your task, so don't mind me too much." He turns back to the shelf to survey the books once more, grabbing the last one he needed and adding it to pile on his cart.

"We'll discussing this more at length later." Too many people around and he'd rather hold their conversation in private.

"Professional curiosity?" Her eyebrows twitch up in mild confusion, though the smiling mask does not fall. It does seem just a touch more forced, though. "Okay. We'll talk at closing time, then?"

Carefully, she hefts up the stack of books, slipping the topmost paperback into its alphabetical place on the shelf and taking great care to avoid the antique tea set sitting on the table nearby.

Half an hour later, she would be found behind the counter, switching off lights and running a dust rag over the wood shelving.
