i love you brian.

This was a scene I did for Lava Lake Beach that was cut for time.

I had been trying to give Kelly more of a reason to seek Marco’s help with Tad. She can’t help but be reminded her own predicament in everything around her, just like how Marco feels after his conversation with Tad in @lunchbagmonster ‘s section.

Marco is too dense to even realize what’s going on.

anyways, hermit crabs are cool, hermit crabs in skulls are even cooler.

New Episode of Star vs the Forces of Evil tonight by me and @zachsleepshere!

Here is the original title card I made for the pitch, inspired by cheesy 60s teen beach movies. Zach found the sunset on google and added a gaussian blur painted the background for me

I went to art school!

Hope you enjoy this episode~~~~

Just as a curiousity (since i didn't go to either* but they were right out my front door) did you got to Savannah-SCAD or Alanta-SCAD.

Avatar

Officially I went to neither.  Unofficially I snuck into Savannah SCAD a lot.  I had applied to the SCAD but rejected on purely on academics.  I was a highschool dropout with some big failed attempts at Jr College, and I guess that was more important than my portfolio.  Left me real sad and angry, but looking back at it I’m glad it happened.  In fact, it seems like they were looking out for me- I don’t know if I was honestly ready for college at that moment.

I ended up at CalArts like 6-7 years later?

im hoping to be a storyboard artist at disney tv once i graduate art school, is it true that disney only accepts calarts graduates, or can i go to SCAD (a more available and affordable option for me)? 💚💚💚

Hello Anonymous question asker!

First, Cool! Animation is dope! Go for it! Make that art, follow your dreams, do the thing!

Second, I think there are a bunch of weird myths on the internet about CalArts and it being the only entry into the industry.  Disney TV absolutely hires people from any school, if you are talented that is what matters.  I know a few people here who went to SCAD, I almost went myself (it didn’t work out...)  We have several Ringling people on the crew here at Star, SVA, people from CSU Long Beach, Fullerton, some people who went to state schools, etc etc etc.  Heck, there’s people here who actually never went to college.

This industry is all about what you can do, and less about where you came from.

I will say, one thing that CalArts offers is proximity to the industry hub, and if you want to work at one of the ‘big studios’ you’ll inevitably need to come out here.  CalArts jump starts that for a lot of people.

Savannah is a really lovely place though, I almost became a Ghost Tour guide there!  If you go visit the school definitely eat at Zunzi’s its one of my favorite food spots in the country!

ALSO DON’T BE AFRAID TO TAKE TIME AT A JR COLLEGE AND GET GENERAL ED CLASSES OUT OF THE WAY!!! FOR CHEAPERRRRR!!!!

If you have any more questions, feel free to ask!

Who came up with the Teen Sadness Hotline joke from the promo? Was it you?

I would love to take the credit, its a real funny bit- but the Teen Sadness Hotline was Dominic’s idea.

There was some fear coming into the episode about Marco being too sad, so Cassie and I were told to go ‘over the top’ with it, so it would be cartoonish and not a huge downer.  That worked well enough with our initial pitch, but once it went to animatic and Adam’s reads for Marco were added in it just felt weird.

So Dominic pulled the cartoonishly sad dialogue and went with the performance you heard Adam give in the final cut. To offset that he added the back and forth with radio and the teen sadness hotline to keep it a little lighter.

Here is some stuff i did for part 1 of Toffee (slightly abridged).

The revisionist history paintings were something I wanted to do to really push the distorted view of the world Ludo has, they’re not propaganda to him they are absolutely true.  He sees himself as a savior and rightful ruler.

But Ludo is nuts, so of course he kills a choir of children after they sing his praises.

From Star vs. the Forces of Evil - Just Friends.

It is weird seeing animated choreography to a song you wrote. It’s like, they’re dancing, but someone had to draw them dancing, so a poor artist in South Korea had to listen to this ridiculous song a million times to get the timing right, and then that poor artist got into his/her car at the end of the day and spontaneously burst into “be juuuuuuuust frieeeeeeends” as he/she pulled out of the RDK parking lot, and was like DAMMIT.

Anyway. @zachsleepshere saw me in the Star offices one day, and was like “Brian, we’re bringing Love Sentence back. They’re gonna sing out of a toothbrush.”

“What?”

“You know, those toothbrushes that have songs coming out of them so kids will brush their teeth.”

“Right …. wait, what?”

AND THE REST IS HISTORY.

I wish I had a video of Nick Lachey singing this in the studio. That guy’s fun.

Brian is a cherished gift and this story is 100% true.

The first of issue of the Star Vs The Forces of Evil comic series comes out today!  It seems like it was only yesterday over half a year ago when Devin Taylor (my immensely talented artist) and I started working together on it.  I’m very lucky to have him to turn my words into beautiful comics and jokes.

Check for it at your local comic books shop, or wherever dope comics are sold.
