At work me and a couple coworkers (black, white, and mexican) had a fun discussion on whether there are more ghosts at a hospital or a cemetery.

everyone individually took a moment to specify that ghosts probably aren't REAL real. then weighed in on where and why.

for the record my position was that there's probably way more ghosts in hospitals because that's where people die horribly, but since you can only see ghosts in dark, solitary conditions, graveyards at night is where the majority of ghost sightings occur. hospitals are usually well lit and busy, so even if they're crammed with ghosts the living are too damn busy to see them. meanwhile if a cemetery has even one ghost that followed her corpse there from the hospital, she'll be spotted because that's where all the ghost hunters go to look.

this theory was received as extremely sensible, and a coworker drew the conclusion that that's why abandoned hospitals are even scarier than graveyards. once the place gets abandoned then you can tell how much ghosts got built up.

we all liked this explanation a lot and explained it to everyone else all night. and of course, none of us believe in ghosts.

What I think some people are missing is that there's this whole genre of discourse about how society needs to return to a state where there's. to put it simply, more interdependence (especially regarding things like the family unit).

The modern world makes you lonely, they say. Then they sell trad lifestyles as the solution.

But personally I'm really glad I live in a world where if my family and my country suck I can just ditch them and go to a new place where I barely know anyone and be completely fine even if I never bother to learn who my neighbors are or anything.

People talk about this false and idealized version of the past like it was a heaven of social harmony where you happily rely on your family and have all of these nice social events full of people you are intimately familiar with and they never seem to consider what might happen if your ~community~ would rather kill you than let you be yourself or have any freedom.

Being able to both exit such groups and survive without them is life-saving.

This is a good thing in the same way no-fault divorce is a good thing.

This tradfam argument as a solution for loneliness is christofascists capitalizing on the problem when they know that's not what caused it.

What caused the problem is capitalists deliberately creating an economy designed to maximize the exploitation of our time and labor to maximize not only their profit, but our exhaustion, for the purpose of leaving us without the time and energy to organize and resist and demand change, with the side effect that we also don't have the time and energy to socialize. So the only interaction the working class gets is with whoever we live with.

First of all, anonymously starting shit with random people on Tumblr is cowardly and gross. Especially when they have no clue what you're even on about. If you don't want what you're saying to be attached to your name (or at least your handle) you probably shouldn't be saying it most of the time.

The only valid thing being said here is that people should probably tag their kink. But ultimately it's on you to curate your social media experience. There's a button to unfollow or block people who post/reblog things you don't like to see. It's not up to them to curate your experience for you. Tumblr's biggest selling point is that you literally only see content you opted into seeing. So if you are being bothered by content you don't like, that's on you.

But much much much more importantly, absolutely fuck the idea that my dark and socially taboo art/fiction/kink is okay but someone else's is morally wrong.

No, but yes. The reason insects can have a single connection point like that is because they have a completely different type of wing which operates on a different set of laws of physics. To hideously oversimplify it for the sake of brevity, they're so small and light they can basically treat air like a fluid.

Birds, and anything larger than a bird, are using their entire body as a single plane with which to generate lift. Insects don't have to, but they do need to be able to move their wings at a lot of different angles very quickly. And hummingbirds split the difference between the two.

What nibbles on my brain still is some flying insects are bigger than some birds still, mainly some beetles since butterflies and moths clearly are mostly wing.

Until a few years ago our understanding of physics said bees can't fly. We don't really know how shit works.
