Anonymous asked:

Are you an advocate for censorship?

is this because i said not to use the r slur

this? is this what you're referring to? yeah i think calling other people slurs is bad

reminder that the people this slur refers to, people with intellectual disabilities, are still campaigning to REDUCE/end its usage, not "reclaim" it. the r word used to be a medical diagnosis--it was never a 'nice' term and it was always used for ableist, and generally eugenicist, ends--and it is still included in several state laws, so self advocates with intellectual disabilities have been passing laws around the country to get this word out of laws. under no circumstance does it make sense to "reclaim" this term, especially if you are not affected by the ableism that people with intellectual disabilities face.

Ousmane Sembene was a Senegalese author, actor, screenwriter, director, producer, historian, poet, communist organizer and philosopher. He was the first person to ever make a film in an indigenous african language (he often wrote in Senegalese and Lebu Wolof), and he spent much of his life working to dismantle French imperialism, capitalist resource hoarding, and patriarchal violence against women. He’s one of those historical figures whose biography reads as too cool to be true but he truly was that kind of guy.

Unfortunately, most of his films, especially his later work, are hard to access or purchase in western/anglophone markets- I think the criterion collection carries a few of his older films? That being said, a lot of his books were translated into English and are particularly good- God’s Bits of Wood and Xala are definitely the most beginner friendly works from his collection and are pretty easy to find second hand. If you enjoy Western authors and artists like Albert Camus, Emile Zola, or Zora Neale Hurston you’ll definitely appreciate his writing. His work is also influenced by socialist realism, the Harlem renaissance, and Senegalese oral tradition. Compared to other famous west african writers (like Chinua Achebe, or Ngugi wa Thiong’o) Sembene works a lot of satire, irony, and humor into his writings, and his work really strives towards describing African joy, hardship, and community.

He’s such a cool artist and deserves to be more commonly known in the West, especially in Anglophone and Francophone cultures :)

If a worker who isn't the owner says ANYTHING similar to "I'm not really supposed to do this but-" and then does something that helps you, under no circumstances inform the business, including through reviews. You tell them that the worker was polite, professional, the very model of customer service and why you like to go there. You do not breathe a word of the rulebreaking.

btw! I was made aware that many people don't know that we're boycotting Eurovision this year, so.

we are boycotting Eurovision, as per BDS guidelines.

don't watch the stream, don't engage with the videos, don't post it about it on social media using hashtags that are going to trend.

It’s actually crazy talking to friends and relatives about what’s going on because very few of them know that this is a retaliatory attack. I keep seeing people online call the attack unprovoked too.

So those who don’t know, on April 1st Israeli warplanes bombed Iran’s consulate in Damascus. The attack killed 7 of Iran’s military advisers including 3 senior commanders.

Reuters reporters at the site in the Mezzeh district of Damascus saw emergency workers clambering atop rubble of a destroyed building inside the diplomatic compound, adjacent to the main Iranian embassy building. Emergency vehicles were parked outside. An Iranian flag hung from a pole by the debris.
Iran’s ambassador to Syria said the strike hit a consular building in the embassy compound and that his residence was on the top two floors. Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said in a statement that seven Iranian military advisers died in the strike including Mohammad Reza Zahedi, a senior commander in its Quds Force, which is an elite foreign espionage and paramilitary arm.

This attack on the embassy is against international law. Embassies are protected sites. But instead of condemning the attack and putting pressure on Israel, the US has spent the past week and a half calling West Asian countries to put pressure on Iran, with Biden going as far as to warn Iran not to attack Israel and saying that his support for Israel is ‘iron clad’.

The West, the UN, and UN Security Council have largely failed to condemn the attack which means Iran has no choice but to retaliate with force in order to prevent future attacks. Otherwise, the country will look vulnerable and weak, especially to the Israeli occupation government which has spent months bombing neighbouring countries like Syria and Lebanon

The Lemkin Institute for Genocide has issued a genocide alert for the West Bank

The Lemkin Institute is horrified by the dire situation transpiring in the West Bank. During what has already been a devastating six months of conflict in Gaza, the Israeli military and far-right settlers have used the cover of war to conduct continuous attacks on Palestinians in the West Bank, often leading to death and forced displacement. These attacks have been underreported in the mainstream Western press, which has also failed to tie Israel Defense Force (IDF) and settler violence in the West Bank and East Jerusalem to the genocide being committed in Gaza. These processes are all part of an overwhelming push on the part of Israeli authorities to oust Palestinians from their remaining ancestral lands. In other words, Israel is committing genocide against Palestinians across Palestine.

Maternity kits, medical threads and scissors, water testing kits, anesthetics, mobile desalination units, etc do you see the pattern? Israel is not only starving the people of Gaza but it also wants to ensure the spread of disease through contaminated water and surgical tools, as well as ensuring injured Palestinians suffer through horrendous pain.

It's beyond sickening.

Fact: The earliest reliably dated use of the phrase “fucked up” appears in the court records of a US Navy court-martial case from 1863; the way the phrase is used suggests that its meaning was already well known at the time, but this is the first known printed record of it that we can confidently put a date to.

Additional fact: Bram Stoker’s Dracula is set in 1897.

Conclusion: It would not anachronistic for your Dracula fanfic to have a character describe the Count as a fucked up old man.

I haven't purchased a HP item in close to a decade - I use the books I already had as doorstops or to prop a laptop up for meetings nowadays.

There is NO "death of the author" with JK Rowling - she controls and continues to profit from her IP, and uses that money to fund hate groups.

Here's your periodic reminder of why it's so important not to buy any Harry Potter merch or watch anything JKR profits from.

It isn't about cancelling problematic media, idgaf. We're capable of reading books we already own with a critical eye.

It's about not giving more power to someone who is using it to materially harm our community.
