Our 1st place contest winner requested a Niankhkhnum and Khnumhotep comic as their prize.
I took a class about Ancient Egypt last semester and we had a whole lecture dedicated to talking about how gay Niankhkhnum and Khnumhotep were. Their tomb walls were decorated with scenes of them ignoring their wives in favor of embracing each other. In one scene, the couple is seated at a banquet table that is usually reserved for a husband and wife. There’s an entire motif of Khnumhotep holding lotus flowers which in ancient Egyptian tradition symbolizes femininity. Khnumhotep offers the lotus flower to Niankhkhnum, something that only wives were ever depicted as doing for their husbands. In fact, Khnumhotep is repeatedly depicted as uniquely feminine, being shown smaller and shorter than his partner Niankhkhnum and being placed in the role of a woman. Size is a big deal in Egyptian art, husbands are almost always shown as being larger and taller than their wives. So for two men of equal status to be shown in once again, a marital fashion, is pretty telling. Not to mention they were literally buried together which is the strongest bond two people could share in ancient Egypt, as it would mean sharing the journey to the afterlife together. And yet 90% of the academic text about these two talks about these clues in vague terms and analyze the great “brotherhood” they shared, and the enigma of Khnumhotep being depicted as feminine. Apparently it’s too hard for archaeologists to accept homosexuality in the ancient world, as well as the possibility of trans individuals.
On the last note, I was walking around the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago and there is a mummy on exhibit. It caught my attention because the panel that was describing it was talking about how it was a woman’s body in a male coffin and wow, the Egyptian working that day really screwed that up. My summary, not actual words, sorry I can’t remember verbatim but it basically said that someone screwed up.
They claimed that the Egyptians screwed up a burial.
The Egyptians. Screwed up. A burial.
Now I’m not an expert in Ancient Egypt but from what I know, and what the exhibit was telling me, burials and the afterlife and all that jazz DEFINED the Egyptian religion and culture. They don’t just ‘screw up’. So instead of thinking outside the box for two seconds and wonder why else a genetically female body was in a male coffin, the ‘researchers’ blatantly disregard the rest of their research and decided to call it a screw up. Instead of, you know, admitting that maybe this mummy presented as male during his life and was therefore honorably buried as he was identified. But it would be too much of a stretch to admit that a transgender person could have existed back then.

The Amazon Rainforest has been burning for the last 16 days straight. The Brazilian government says the wildfire is caused by the winter itself, since it doesn't rain a lot there... in a rainforest. It is actually, partially true. Winter is indeed a dry season and wildfires may happen, specially close to the Cerrado (a brazilian biome similar to the african Savanna), but what they're not telling us is that:
The deforestation has increased 80% since last year
The native peoples and animals are being slaughtered for their lands (legally protected green areas)
The government is hiding and lying about scientific data, saying that environmentalists and NGOs are communists trying to destroy the nation. They are brainwashing people to think that sustainability is terrible for the economy
Our Minister of Environment is couldn't care less about the environment and is only there to support the livestock producers and give them what they want. The President and his Minister won't put a single dollar on environmental safety
The wildfires are just so huge that its black smoke and ashes reached the skies of São Paulo, a state over 2.000 kilometers away from the Amazon.
I could just keep going all night about how our environment is being threatened by this new government. We need every single help we can possibly can.
Please don't let this go unseen. Search for yourself, talk to people about it, make noise, be angry and be scared. Let the world know about it and demand action. This is not about Brazil, is about the planet. The Amazon Rainforest is one of the most important biomes in the world, being responsible for the climate, rains, biodiversity, carbon sequestration and life itself.

if a studio with 20-30 years of experience can manage this then SURELY an established studio with NEAR 100 YEARS of experience can maybe, just maybe, include a female that ISN’T a part of their formula

Laika are goddamn ARTISTS and MASTERS OF THEIR CRAFT. Look at the animation on Kubo and tell me it doesn’t feel more like CGI than stop motion sometimes because it’s so smooth.
I love them so much.
Wait wait wait… Kubo was STOP MOTION?!?!?
Yup.
I mean obviously all of Laika’s movies have had some effects added afterwards, because there’s some things you really just can’t DO in stop motion (like falling snow, for example), but all of their films have been stop motion.
I don’t know how to embed videos successfully, but there are some REALLY cool behind-the-scenes stuff for Kubo that you can probably find if you look on youtube. :)
It’s amazing how people don’t realize that words can hurt? Like encouraging is free to give. You don’t have to like something and that’s fine but telling someone the time they took to craft something was worthless is just the meanest thing you can do to a creator. Respect your fandom creators no matter what level they’re at in developing their craft or eventually you won’t have any.
To all fandom creators: you created something from nothing but characters and your own idea. You and your creations are worthy. Please share them.

Hello, I´d like to share with you and your followers something I got from a writer in my fandom years ago. They left already but their words stuck with me. I´m going to share the wisdom with you in my own words.
Every time you get notes/kudos, imagine real people standing in front of you. Did you get 20 kudos? It might seem like it´s not much but would you fit so many people into your livingroom? It´s 20 REAL PEOPLE who decided to read your work and liked it. Imagine giving each of them a hug!
Did you get 50 kudos? Giving 50 hugs would take some time but you could give them cookies instead. Imagine 50 cookies. It´s a lot!
Did you get 100 kudos? Go to a mall and count 100 people, you´ll see it´s actually a lot more than you thought when you saw the number.
Did you get 500 kudos? 1 000? Well, it starts getting a bit overwhelming when you imagine such a crowd but it´s AMAZING that you made so many people happy with your writing. And you´d need a living room the size of a cncert hall to fit them all in :)

Just an FYI, I’m logging out of tumblr for today to support the protest; I don’t think it will actually yield results but I just really don’t want to be on this site tomorrow. If my account is still around after the purge I will try to come back and check in on where my stuff will be.
The best thing tho would be to keep an eye on my twitter, I’ll be putting updates there once I figure out what to do with all my work. I’ve also already started putting a couple archives of my work on my patreon so you can always pledge at level one if you want those. So! In recent light of Tumblr banning NSFW content starting Dec 17th, I will be replacing the NSFW pages of Avialae here with the censored versions (I already do this on webtoons and tapas). There are a few alternatives to read the comic uncensored:
• Support me on Patreon (https://www.patreon.com/lucid) for $5/month or more and get 10 pages ahead, which are always uncensored.
• Read it on the main site: yaoi.biz It updates Tu/Th/Sat at noon cst and is always uncensored. The site is integrated with Patreon, so if you support me on Patreon you can get access to additional content on yaoi.biz as well. I always link out to this site when I post pages on tumblr anyways since Tumblr is garbage for reading webcomics. There is also an email newsletter you can sign up for at the bottom of the site that will email you when a new page is available.
• Follow Avialae on Twitter: (https://twitter.com/avialaecomic). The comic updates publicly, uncensored. You can turn on push notifications for that account alone if you’re looking for an alternative to tumblr’s notification system. (My main twitter is https://twitter.com/llllucid which is where I’m most active.)
• I will also be getting a pillowfort.io account when their site is back up and running. Not sure if Avialae as a whole will live on there yet, but I’ll definitely be using it for my other nsfw art at least. I’ll make announcements about that on my twitter and here when it happens.
Please, please, please support your favorite NSFW artists right now–financially if you can afford it, but even just spreading the word helps enormously. I’m not entirely surprised Tumblr is doing this, as my uncensored content has been kicked off countless sites who have suddenly changed their policy. The internet is growing increasingly closed-off towards NSFW (especially queer) creators, and it’s harder and harder to find a new home every time.
So, please, tell this ugly blue site to fuck itself and do whatever you can to help nsfw creators.

Update: I’ve been trying to get censored pages reviewed on tumblr and even with heavily censored black bars most of them are not getting through. I can’t do anything about this so I’m just. Not going fix them. That means those pages will disappear from tumblr. This site sucks for reading comics anyways and if you want to actually read the comic in sequential order you should be doing it on the uncensored site or censored on webtoons or tapas.
I will continue to post pages here but I may switch to preview images and link elsewhere because I have very little interest in fighting tumblr’s broken content review system.
Thank you to everyone who has followed me elsewhere so far! I hope you continue to follow the comic outside of this hell site. I try to make it as easy as possible for people to follow Avialae but I’d rather spend my time actually making the comic than fighting with the same company that has brought us quality sites like yahoo answers.

The gloom that had settled across the sky seemed to have preserved time like an insect in a jar. It was batting its little wings, wishing to move forward yet it tumbled in repetition.
That December, the cold frosted the windows early on but the wind was still, as if growing in silence with the tumult of the happenings in the east.
Hannibal felt a knot in his chest, gazing out of the kitchen window at the groves beyond the plains. A thin layer of ice had covered them, tracing the soft and wide contours of the Irish countryside. River Fergus was just beyond, flowing ceaselessly into the Atlantic.
