Ashlynn woke from her nap with a yawn. Her mother had told her not to sleep in the forest, but she couldn’t help the sleepiness that came from the forest’s many sounds. Two black dogs had snuggled up against her, cloaked in shadows and one glaring upon the scenery with red eyes; she had found them in a dream. Her father told her the spell and the words, and when she woke up, they were there. It had been a few weeks since they had been contracted and named Medwick and Saughter, and she refused to leave their sides, except when she had to return home.
Medwick remained vigilant as he swept the landscape while his brother was in a peaceful slumber with his head on Ashlynn’s lap. She reached to give Medwick’s neck a scratch, but he remained stoic. “What you looking fore?” Those innocent green eyes followed his gaze. All she saw was thick trees and masses of wild flower. There was something though; a wisp of magic, like a flutter from a butterfly.
‘It is strange,’ Medwick’s demonic tone echoed in her thoughts.
“We’re strange. Let’s go look.” Ashlynn pushed Saughter’s head off her lap and smoothed out the thin fabric that held her tunic in place. Her mother had stitched it from an old, torn blanket. She would have preferred one a seamstress had stitched with silk; the ones that she saw at the shops in town and how the mannequins looked like the shined behind the glass. She had begged her mother for one but instead received the cotton dress and a thick bruise on her wrist. But smoothing out the fabric was a strange habit; she always wanted to be presentable.
The two demons stood and followed their confidant little master, ready at a moments notice to bare their canines and protect her.
“What if it’s another present from daddy?” The child held tight onto Saughter’s fur; for a 6 year old, she could handle herself as well as any other child, but sometimes her little feet couldn’t move as fast or became suddenly delicate against a rock or twig.
She had been scolded multiple times for treading blood into the house; from now on, she treaded carefully and avoided stones and any other sharp objects.
‘No. We would know.’ Saughter picked up, ears at attention and teeth bared upon the slumbering body that appeared unconscious before them.
Ashlynn moved closer, but found Medwick quick to shield her from the unknown creature. ‘Careful. It is alive.’
She watched its chest move; it was beautiful the way it slept. “It looks like a fairy,” she whispered. The fairy was pale, almost perfect in form. She’d never seen such a creature so perfect. “What if it’s hurt?”
‘Then it shall die. If it will not survive without intervention, then it was meant to die.’ Medwick growled; Ashlynn had a different thought process. The two wolf like creatures remained vigilant as their master crept closer to give its forehead a few taps. “Are you ok?”
Ash opened his emerald green eyes the feel of the soft grass tickling the sides of his face he could feel his silver hair braided. He looks up at the small child standing above him with a look of curiosity on her face.
“I am ok, little one.”
He looks around the clearing as he sits up in search of his companion only seeing the two black hounds standing on alert and wary of him, he suspects.
“I was with someone did you happen to see someone else around here, little one.” He gives her a small smile reassuring her that he is fine as he shifts to leaning up along a tree and looking down at himself. His outfit had changed to a classic black Armani three-piece suit his shoes were fine Italian leather and as he reached up to his hair he could feel his ears had extended to points just slightly.
taking a closer look at the little girl before him he would almost call her the child of Ashlynn their resemblance is almost uncanny.
“Oh, how rude of me I am Harper, Ash harper.” He extends his hand for a formal greeting still unsure of what was happening or where he was.
The two demons curled their lips, releasing monstrous snarls at the creature before them as it extended a hand towards their master. Those dark green eyes, pure from the future torment, looked at the hand offered. She could smell the strange magic flowing off of his body in whisps;, not at all like the blood-tinged metallic that came with her abilities; honey with lilac and pine. He smelled of the faeries that begged her to come along with them at night, the ones that chased after her and left deep bites on her heels when she wasn’t fast enough.
But she had never heard of a faerie willingly give their name to a stranger. Maybe this one is a good faerie, she thought.
‘Careful. We know not what it is. Do not make a blind deal.’ Saughter snapped his jaw a few spaces from Ash’s hand, receiving a glare from his little master.
“No one comes in this forest when I am here.”
‘When we are here to protect you.’ Medwick corrected. Ears raised in case another threat would soon be upon them.
“Medwick did not see anyone else.” Her hand remained on his neck, still wary of the stranger. “Your clothes are strange … .” A once over; he could be faerie from his clothing alone, “I do not make blind deals.” She could hear Saughter’s chuckle in her thoughts as his body relaxed slightly. “My name is Ashlynn.”
Ash did not flinch at the snarl nor the snap of the hound and slowly put his hand down. The confusion was apparent on his face as he processed the fact that this small child was Ashlynn Redd and from the looks of it before her mother started the experiments.
“Damn dragon sent us to far back or at least sent me to far back.” he muttered under his breath as he processed the situation. He gives his attention back to little Ashlynn.
“Ok, then I have to agree with you never make a deal without knowing the outcome first.” Ash could tell that there was no electronics nor technology that could be useful he had no weapons nor magic that he knew how to use his best bet would be to find Abagale and explain what happened.
“Ashlynn do you know Abagale by chance a beautiful red dragon.” hoping that she was learning magic from the dragon at this point was his only hope.
The two demons snarled and Ashlynn’s rage took over her well being; two trees shattered behind Ash and a black spot appeared on the white of her left eye, forcing her to shut it tight from the abrupt pain.
She rubbed it frantically as her other eye showed off similar spots of the black coloration. “Go away. I do not want to hurt you. You should forget about any dragons. They are only in fairy tales.” A lie. If he found her, he would surely be eaten. Abagadresa was in the foulest of moods when she had found the bruises and whip marks upon her body; Ashlynn had to beg her to not harm her mother. For three days, the mighty dragon pouted and refused to speak to her. Out of pity and the slight jealousy that came from the appearance of Ashlynn’s new companions, she began speaking, barely, but speaking none the less.
Saughter rubbed his head against Ashlynn’s cheek, hoping that the gesture would help distract her from the pain.
‘Why not show her him? The sight of that reptile ripping him in half would be sightly.’ Medwick sniffed the air, snapping his jaw to get her attention.
“I am not that mean … she would not do that if I-” Her eyes wide when she realized her thoughts were coming out of her mouth. Those green eyes, now speckled with black, held fear and her chest heaved, quick to shake her head as if it would make the stranger forget what she had just revealed.
Ash kept his calm he knew how powerful this child was and will be and that did not scare him nor did the hounds her reaction was enough to let him know that the dragon was around.
“You do not know me nor does Abagale right now but I do have a phrase that she taught me that will grant me safe passage.” He clears his throat and speaks the only dragon tongue he knows. “Kin of my Kin, Blood of my Blood safe passage we seek and truths we speak.” Abagale beat this into him saying should he ever come across another dragon they would trust him enough not to kill him on the spot.
“I think I will be safe little one.” He stands and stretches lightly seeing as she only comes up to his belly and not sure as to what to do to help her now knowing what is in store for her. he takes a step back to let the hounds know he is not a threat and looks down at the girl.
“Could you tell me the way please, I do not wish her harm nor to bring harm to you or your hounds.
