‘I’m planning on shooting up a public place soon…killing as many girls as I see’ - The Arrest, Criminal History and Sentencing of Christopher Cleary

On January 19th, 2019, a 27-year-old Colorado native wrote a post on Facebook. In it, he lamented the fact he was “still a virgin” and had “never had a girlfriend”. Seeing this as a personal and deliberate campaign of victimisation undertaken by women against him in particular, Cleary wrote: “I’m ready to die and all the girls the [sic] turned me down is [sic] going to make it right by killing as many girls as I see”. Although Cleary wrote prolifically in this post about being romantically rejected by women, he has an equally prolific history of convictions for exhibiting harassing and stalking behaviour towards women.

In one instance, he posted the phone number of a woman who rejected him to Craigslist on an ad soliciting sex. Cleary also made violent threats to other women in the past, in once instance telling a woman in 2015: “I own multipl [sic] guns I can have u dead in a second”. Even worse than this, Cleary has a history of violent assaults on women. At the time of his arrest he was on probation for stalking two teenage girls; and had also urinated on and strangled a woman in another attack. Even after this, Cleary received yet another conviction for stalking and harassing his case worker. In total, since 2012, Cleary has been reported to the police for stalking and harassment by eight different women.

Cleary was again arrested after making the Facebook post, being tracked down by police to a McDonald’s in Utah. Due to its timing, there were fears it heralded an imminent attack on one of the women’s marches that were taking place that day. Cleary was remanded in jail for several months after being charged, later pleading guilty to making an attempted threat of terrorism. Although this is a felony offence which can carry as much as five years in prison, in May it was decided that Cleary should spend no more time behind bars besides the four months that had transpired since January. So, once again, Christopher Cleary received probation. As he had in all his previous stalking cases.

BREAKING, 16/04/2019: Colorado police/FBI carrying out urgent search for armed woman who is “infatuated” with Columbine and poses a serious and present threat.

-The suspect is an 18-year-old female named Sol Pais.

-She is 5′5″ and has brown hair.

-She was last seen in Jefferson County, Colorado west of Denver wearing a black T-shirt, camo pants and black boots.

-The Colorado Department of Education ordered all schools in the Denver metropolitan area to be placed on lockdown.

-She travelled to Colorado from Florida and arrived yesterday; possibly for the approaching 20th anniversary of the Columbine High School shooting.

-Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department have placed additional staff at all area schools.

-The FBI have described her as “armed and extremely dangerous”.

-The authorities have instructed that, if you see this suspect, you are not to approach her but to instead call 911 immediately.

Updates, 17/04/2019:

-Sol Pais has not been apprehended.

-All schools in the Denver area are to be closed today due to the ongoing threat.

-Any extra-curricular activities/athletics competitions set to take place in the area today have also been cancelled.

-Upon her arrival in Colorado, Sol Pais legally purchased a pump action shotgun and ammunition in Littleton.

-She travelled by plane from Miami, Florida and arrived at Denver International Airport in Colorado.

-She is from Surfside, Florida. Police and FBI have been at her residence since yesterday.

-Sol Pais’ father has released a statement saying he is in “disbelief”, is living through “a nightmare” and has pleaded with his daughter to surrender to police peacefully.

-Her family lineage is Argentinian.

-Denver Channel 7 found a phone number listed for Sol Pais’ parents, when they called an FBI agent answered and told the caller they were partway through an interview.

Update: Sol Pais (18) has been found dead. It is believed at this stage that she took her own life. It is not believed anyone else has been harmed.

Robert Hawkins was temporarily placed at an inpatient facility called the Richard Young Center when he was 13-years-old after threatening to kill his step-mother with a knife. He warned, “The only way she will leave the house is in a body bag.” 

During a cognitive behavioral group therapy session the evening of the incident, he thought, “I’m here for no reason, I’m mad,” although he acknowledged, “They think I want to kill my parents.” Furthermore, on one of his intake forms, he listed his three feelings as “Angry to be here, relieved to be away from parents, and confused at why I’m here.”

In the following days, Hawkins remained indecisive about whether he wanted to return home or never step foot in his parents house again, as they explored his relationship with the family, particularly the animosity shown towards his step-mother. He described her as “mean and abusive” and that his father “sides with her everytime.” Hawkins commented she just “hates me so much” and believed it was due to his biological mother, recalling an argument they had when they first met: “I think my step mom thinks I’m just like my mom, that’s why she doesn’t like me.” He made several violent Mother’s Day cards for his stepmother, one with a hangman’s noose on the cover. On the inside, he wrote, “Thank you for not letting me kill myself” and “I tried to love you but I couldn’t.” The cards were confiscated, and in response, he said, “Why, she’s just my step-mom and she knows I hate her.”

Hawkins stated he was “scared” at home because his parents constantly “yell” at him, and he exhibited the same fear about an upcoming family meeting. Instead of facing them, he wished “a car would hit my family on their way here so they wouldn’t come tonight.”

He displayed a noted hopelessness towards the home situation throughout his time at the facility, once commenting, “I used to cry all the time, but now I can’t even cry anymore, I don’t even feel anything.” It was also here that he first expressed fantasies of murder-suicide. He told staff, “If anything happens at home I’ll probably kill my step mom and then kill myself.”

Five years later, this desire would become generalized, as Hawkins opened fire inside Von Maur department store at Westroads Mall, leaving nine dead, including himself.

Dennis Rader sent many taunting letters to news broadcasting stations, authoritys etc claiming responsibility for the murders in Kansas city, describing what he had done to his victims and detail, he even gave himself the name ‘b.t.k’. Dennis hoped he would receive attention from media all over the country, but to his disappointment he did not. He wanted to be famous like the other serial killers he watched on the news, e.g Ted Bundy, Charles Manson and Ed Kemper to name a few.

Two notebooks were found in the vehicle 17-year-old Guilherme Taucci Monteiro and 25-year-old Luiz Henrique de Castro left parked outside Raul Brasil School as  they proceeded inside and killed eight people, along with themselves on March 13, 2019. The images show 17-year-old Guilherme Taucci Monteiro enter the school first and open fire on a group of students with a .38-caliber revolver. Twenty-five-year-old Luiz Henrique de Castro follows closely behind and uses an axe to target an already incapacitated victim. Together, they killed eight people before Guilherme took Luiz’s life and then committed suicide himself.

Samuel Melquíades - Student, 16 years old: Samuel was very close to his family, his dream was be an artist just like his father. Kaio Lucas da Costa Limeira - Student, 15 years old: Kaio was a nice student, he always go to church and sang there, the boy also was a fan of Real Madrid and a judo fighter. Jorge Antônio Moraes, owner of Jorginho Vehicles, 51 years old: Jorge was a kind and joyful friend, he always give work on his store to those who was needed. Marilena Umezu, pedagogical coordinator, 59 years old: Marilena was an defender of education and everyone loved her in the community. In facebook, in criticizing the possession of weapons, she said that education is the best weapon to save a citizen. Eliana Regina Xavier, school agent, 38 years old: Friendly and accommodating, she did everything she could to help students and teachers, Eliana was like a mother to the students.
