This has the same energy as a writer desperately trying to make their insanely cool but devastatingly off the wall plot point work with the rest of the story

“you’ve already seen a movie this week” oh i’m sorry stardew valley am i not the backbone of this fucking town? did i not single-handedly fix the community center, the bus, the boat, and whip up a movie theater on top of that? am i not shipping out thousands of dollars worth of material on the daily and killing monsters for you people? collecting whatever bullshit you ask for? bringing you gifts tailored to your preferences? and when i wish only to play the crane game and get a dinosaur egg you won’t even let me in the door to PAY YOU MONEY? unbelievable.

I'm a cryptid in Stardew valley. I live on the outskirts of town. I disappear for days on end, purchasing daily one-way tickets to the calico desert. Nobody knows where I go while I'm there. Can occasionally be found fishing at random spots throughout town. I am never not running on at least one triple shot espresso. I take the abandoned minecarts to get around and am frequently seen disappearing into the sewers. I carry a sword for some reason. Once every week or two I will stride into your bedroom to deliver you your favorite meal. I'm a self-made millionaire. I attend all the town events and will go to your concert in the next town over. I have donated approximately 2583 items to the local museum and singlehandedly revitalized the town community center. There are rumors I can talk to junimos. I'm friends with the local wizard

The symbolism of flowers

Flowers have a long history of symbolism that you can incorporate into your writing to give subtext.

Symbolism varies between cultures and customs, and these particular examples come from Victorian Era Britain. You'll find examples of this symbolism in many well-known novels of the era!

  • Amaryllis: Pride
  • Black-eyed Susan: Justice
  • Bluebell: Humility
  • Calla Lily: Beauty
  • Pink Camellia: Longing
  • Carnations: Female love
  • Yellow Carnation: Rejection
  • Clematis: Mental beauty
  • Columbine: Foolishness
  • Cyclamen: Resignation
  • Daffodil: Unrivalled love
  • Daisy: Innocence, loyalty
  • Forget-me-not: True love
  • Gardenia: Secret love
  • Geranium: Folly, stupidity
  • Gladiolus: Integrity, strength
  • Hibiscus: Delicate beauty
  • Honeysuckle: Bonds of love
  • Blue Hyacinth: Constancy
  • Hydrangea: Frigid, heartless
  • Iris: Faith, trust, wisdom
  • White Jasmine: Amiability
  • Lavender: Distrust
  • Lilac: Joy of youth
  • White Lily: Purity
  • Orange Lily: Hatred
  • Tiger Lily: Wealth, pride
  • Lily-of-the-valley: Sweetness, humility
  • Lotus: Enlightenment, rebirth
  • Magnolia: Nobility
  • Marigold: Grief, jealousy
  • Morning Glory: Affection
  • Nasturtium: Patriotism, conquest
  • Pansy: Thoughtfulness
  • Peony: Bashfulness, shame
  • Poppy: Consolation
  • Red Rose: Love
  • Yellow Rose: Jealously, infidelity
  • Snapdragon: Deception, grace
  • Sunflower: Adoration
  • Sweet Willian: Gallantry
  • Red Tulip: Passion
  • Violet: Watchfulness, modesty
  • Yarrow: Everlasting love
  • Zinnia: Absent, affection

Always loved flower language

Saddest thing ever is reading an academic paper about a threatened or declining species where you can tell the author is really trying to come up with ways the animal could hypothetically be useful to humans in a desperate attempt to get someone to care. Nobody gives a shit about the animals that “don’t affect” us and it seriously breaks my heart

“No I can’t come out tonight I’m sobbing about this entomologist’s heartfelt plea for someone to care about an endangered moth”

This is how I learn there's a moth whose tiny caterpillars live exclusively off the old shells of dead tortoises.

[Image description: text from a section titled On Being Endangered: An Afterthought that says:

Realizing that a species is imperiled has broad connotations, given that it tells us something about the plight of nature itself. It reminds us of the need to implement conservation measures and to protect the region of which the species is a part. But aside form the broader picture, species have intrinsic worth and are deserving of preservation. Surely an oddity such as C. vicinella cannot simply be allowed to vanish.

We should speak up on behalf of this little moth, not only because by so doing we would bolster conservation efforts now underway in Florida, [highlighting begins] but because we would be calling attention to the existence of a species that is so infinitely worth knowing. [end highlighting]

But is quaintness all that can be said on behalf of this moth? Does this insect not have hidden value beyond its overt appeal? Does not its silk and glue add, potentially, to its worth? Could these products not be unique in ways that could ultimately prove applicable?

End image description]

because we would be calling attention to the existence of a species that is so infinitely worth knowing

I was so inspired by this I made it into a piece of art for a final in one of my courses for storytelling in conservation

I used to work for two of the authors, Mark and Nancy Deyrup. They are true naturalists, interested in everything that lives, and wonderful human beings. They still live in central Florida where the tortoise shell moth lives, and have dedicated their whole lives to documenting the Florida scrub ecosystem and educating the public. I don't know if their names reach outside of entomology, but they are beloved figures here.

So a free tool called GLAZE has been developed that allows artists to cloak their artwork so it can't be mimicked by AI art tools.

AI art bros are big mad about it.

Seeing as Twitter is gonna legally steal your work now, please use glaze to protect what you make.

Avatar

Using both Glaze and Nightshade would corrupt the generation of pictures mimicking artist AND mess with the AI's recognition of what everything is. Like it would generate a dog when you ask for a cat.

And it would be hell for AI bros to remove the cloaked pictures from their database ʕ 👀人ʔ

My therapist just told me my problem is that I need to write more fanfiction.

This sounds fake but the logic behind it is actually really interesting? She said obsession with a new fandom triggers quick dopamine release when we consume all this related content--it's easy and addictive.

What we're NOT getting is that 'slow dopamine' that's more sustainable and engaging. That's the kind we get from DOING things that take effort but are ultimately rewarding.

So like, she suggested that writing fic and making fanart are ways to balance the quick dopamine of watching a show/reading fic with the slow dopamine of working at something that takes effort.

Moral of the story is you should engage in the process of creation around your favorite things. You'll feel better for it.

a few little things i'd change or add to minecraft to make it the perfect game for me, but not things that i think would make it the perfect game for everyone else

  • hunger as reward based mechanic instead of a consequence/punishment based mechanic. e.g. rather then hunger taking away your ability to regen, spirt, and causing harm/potential death if not maintained, eating and having a full hunger bar gives a small bonus to the player. maybe they can mine ever so slightly faster, or sprint a teeny-tiny bit faster, or attacks do just ever so slightly more damage. nothing extreme or even that useful, just a little bonus a small treat. not eating won't harm the player, just remove the bonus. it would encourage me to make farms for fun and to get and keep that bonus rather then making farms because i have too, making it feel less like a chore
  • dogs and cats can bring you loot from the things they kill. e.g. a cat can hunt a nearby rabbit and will bring you it's meat, hide, or foot in it's mouth, a dog will hunt a skeleton then bring you a bone in it's mouth. i think it would be cute
  • dogs and cats can lay down and fall asleep for a a minute or so by campfires, but can be woken up early by interacting with them
  • potions would have flavors described in parentheses. e.g. feather falling (honey-glazed turkey), soul speed (sweaty socks). i would find this funny
  • depending on the potion taste, if it's bad, the screen would get a very brief and slight nausea effect to show how nasty the potion is. i would find this even more funny because now i can torture my character with bad tasting potions
  • bring back naturally spawning evil bunny
  • a toggle that isn't cheats that allows creepers to only blow up things above their feet(?). i like the risk of my builds and player being blown up, but the holes in the ground man... i'm sick filling in dirt holes T_T
  • a toggle to make it so items don't despawn specifically when you die and drop them, but will still despawn if manually dropped. i feel like dying and loosing everthing—your good armor, weapons, and the dumb oak wood you grew stupidly attached to keeping on you for "good luck" if you can't get to them in just five minutes, is too high of a consequence for a simple casual game and makes long adventures without cheats and "keep inventory" just too stressful to be fun for me personally
  • since i'm a bedrock player most of the time, i want more stupidly difficult bosses like the wither, but make a toggle to choose to have them either despawn after they kill you so they can't destroy your world because you haven't got good enough yet, or let them continue on until you do get good enough if you're masochist or simply don't care about your builds and appearance of your world (this one may be inspired by my love of terraria)
  • an achievement for walking around a tamed dog outside in the rain for a whole day "smells like wet dog in here"
