I love how Stolas calls Blitz his "knight in shining armor" (in s1e2), because when I was watching the Dutch fandub of that episode, I got reminded how in Dutch we call that the "prins op het witte paard" (prince on the white horse).

I just think that's so fitting considering Blitz's thing for horses. Like, yes, he would totally arrive on a horse to save Stolas if he could.

So, yeah, anyway... Stolas calling Blitz "my prince on the white horse" has been stuck in my head...

Jon is a character that often gets treated by the fandom like a wet cat victorian man (which he is), but I want to give tribute to Scary and Eldritch™ Jon as well. This moment literally had my skin crawling.

And to you people reblogging my Jon art with "Hot Jon rights": I see you. Dinner is served hot tonight.

Close ups under the cut!

I feel like a good shorthand for a lot of economics arguments is "if you want people to work minimum wage jobs in your city, you need to allow minimum wage apartments for them to live in."

"These jobs are just for teenagers on the weekends." Okay, so you'll use minimum wage services only on the weekends and after school. No McDonald's or Starbucks on your lunch break.

"They can get a roommate." For a one bedroom? A roommate for a one bedroom? Or a studio? Do you have a roommate to get a middle-wage apartment for your middle-wage job? No? Why should they?

"They can live farther from city center and just commute." Are there ways for them to commute that don't equate to that rent? Living in an outer borough might work in NYC, where public transport is a flat rate, but a city in Texas requires a car. Does the money saved in rent equal the money spent on the car loan, the insurance, the gas? Remember, if you want people to take the bus or a bike, the bus needs to be reliable and the bike lanes survivable.

If you want minimum wage workers to be around for you to rely on, then those minimum wage workers need a place to stay.

You either raise the minimum wage, or you drop the rent. There's only so long you can keep rents high and wages low before your workforce leaves for cheaper pastures.

"Nobody wants to work anymore" doesn't hold water if the reason nobody applies is because the commute is impossible at the wage you provide.

This also applies to jobs that are priced near minimum wage that you wouldn't initially think so.

For one, I know entry-level editors are paid $45,000 per year, and expected to be able to commute to the office in Manhattan. Which begs the question: who are these people?

  1. People who love and dream of doing this work, who somehow manage to string together a bunch of cost-saving efforts for a couple years before they burn out from the strain of living in poverty, because this is also an industry that is run by Boomers that still believe in "putting in your time" and promotes very slowly.
  2. People with rich parents and trust funds.

So yeah, part of the reason that certain kinds of books get published and others don't (aside from all sorts of other shit) is that disadvantaged people can have a much harder time succeeding in this field, and they're the ones picking out the manuscripts to publish.

Never forget that in this moment we don't just hear the first note of Stolas Speaks (Stolas' theme song). We also hear the click of a camera as it takes a photograph.

And, sure, this makes sense, because dozens of reporters are documenting this moment, and more clicks can be heard moments later as Stolas is taken into the hospital.

But the reason we hear a click right at the same time as Blitz sees Stolas' feathers is the same reason time suddenly slows down for a split second. It's because this moment, this instant of realisation, is etching itself in Blitz's mind, and he will never forget it.

It's the moment he realises he's failed Stolas.

He's failed to show up. Failed to protect him. Failed to be there when Stolas needed him.

Just the same way he failed Fizz, and his mom, and Barbie. All moments that have haunted him for 15 years. Their photo going up in flames in his mind, over and over again every time he remembers the accident. And now this photo, too, will be tangible proof in his mind that he is doomed, that he is tainted. That he can't stop failing the ones he loves. That he will always make things worse.

He will never forgive himself for failing Stolas. It will never not haunt him a little bit. And, hopefully, he will never, ever let it happen again.
