i’m just like? both upset & relieved bc as much as we talk about coming out reactions as “good” or “bad” i feel like most queer ppl who have been thru it know that it’s never Just good or bad, it’s usually a mix and even if the people you come out to are super accepting it is still weird and uncomfortable to have that conversation most of the time
and this was just so realistic?? not that unconditional acceptance or absolute rejection would be unrealistic, but this models so many people’s experience and i’m so grateful to ngozi for communicating that
like- god, bitty’s mom saying “we love you so much, okay?” and “you can come home” WRECKED me because you know bitty needed to hear that, but then her repeating “we can figure it out” and not relaying coach’s reaction was also… definitely something bitty probably both expected and feared. that complexity & mixed reaction is what i was hoping for and i’m so glad ngozi was able to capture the nuance of that

I have other thoughts about the update (Suzanne!) but this panel specifically sticks with me because there’s so much going on in that little exchange. Both of them have just done something they’ve struggled with (Jack winning the Cup and proving he’s worthy of his second chance, Bitty coming out to his parents) for pretty much the duration of he comic. And this is kind of the aftermath of that.
I also think it’s one of the cutest/funniest/sweetest panels in the entire comic. Like, somehow I find the exchange really funny and typical of that “I’m so exhausted but at least I’m with you” feeling. They’re so good for each other, and I love these glimpses into their private life.

ngozi ukazu is honestly so iconic, like imagine still making your comic available online for free when you’re literally going to be selling it and she always provides us with extra information, like the notes and tidbits on her twitter and on bitty’s twitter, while still creating a very meaningful and enjoyable comic??? That’s iconic behaviour and i, for one, will say how grateful i am for her
