If you enjoyed the dancing baby (and really… who wouldn’t?) and you have the resources, consider donating to the Official Navajo Nation COVID-19 Relief Fund.
Navajo Nation has the highest per-capita COVID rates in the US.
i live in texas and put in my actual address, it worked just fine for me!
This is a US senate bill, it works for anyone in the US (I put my Utah address and it sent to the Utah senators.)
Excuse me she was WHAT
I really struggled to believe this until I looked it up
Elena Mizulina put forward a bill, that basically bans legal transition. It includes:
People are scared as fuck. I see lots of panic in russian social media and also on Twitter. They made a hashtag #ProtectRussianTransLives, so you can check it out for more info. And yeah, people started protesting.
The protest hasn’t even started properly. The police detained all of them, called them slurs, misgendered them, asked about genitals. Those pigs arrested two women - Mila Zemtsova and Polina Symonenko
Mila is a journalist who came there with a license. The police immediately arrested her for the organization (!) of the protest which is absolute nonsense. They kept her in the police department for more than 48 hours and took away her phone. She got a fine for nothing.
(translation: I want to not be afraid to show my passport)
Polina’s case is worse. She was arrested for repeated violation of the procedure for holding a public action (hope I wrote it right). Polina was also kept in the department for 48+ hours (it is illegal), misgendered and deadnamed. She was beaten in the court for taking a legal break. They gave her 14 days in a men’s prison.
Going on other sites on Thursday is just sad because they’ll never know the true joy of out of touch

sure. okay. jake paul fbi raid. why the hell not at this point
the problem with all of these, “X creature is an antisemitic stereotype” is…
well, if they are, it’s a thoroughly recent invention
because, yanno
Christians didn’t need to come up with coded representations of the worst things they believed of Jews
they just presented it outright
we didn’t have “goblins hoard gold and control the banks”, we had “Jews hoard gold and control the banks and steal the Host and drink the blood of Christian babies and dig up our dead”
With the exception of impenetrable allegorical works that were just allllll about symbolism, from top to bottom… Notsrim didn’t need to invent some kind of fantastic monster to represent Jews
because to them, we’re already monsters
this isn’t to say you can’t talk about stuff in the context of specific recent creators
JKR’s goblins are grotesque little antisemitic caricatures, just as many editions of D&D made goblins into anti-Asian stereotypes
remember that there’s no One True Goblin Form. There’s no codified rule about dwarves being greedy treasure-hoarding foreigners, in spite of Tolkien. There’s no rule about how long or how pointy an elve’s ears are.
this stuff is all centuries if not millennia old. It’s gone through countless variations in how it has been told. Sometimes, to some people, “goblin”, “elf”, and “dwarf” were all names for the same thing. Sometimes one or the other was extremely specific. Sometimes they were each broad categories, more akin to something like the Japanese “youkai” or “bakemono”.
sometimes, people have sat down and decided to take these ideas and use them to conceal their hatred, to signal others who believe as they do or to try to make their bigotry seem less bigoted by making it about something nonhuman
but that’s recent
because back when people were worried about elves swapping a changeling for their baby, or an ogre in the forest
they were also convinced that “Jew” was itself a category of inhuman creature.
reblogging this again because i checked tumblr again after being behind the wheel for about three and a half hours last night and found another post claiming that goblins originated as antisemitic, which is… no. It’s just no.
and an addendum: Jewish tradition has several creatures of our own who can be identified as a goblins, including the lantukhs and kapelyushnikles of Yiddish folklore.
I’ve been thinking this for a long time bit it’s nice to see actual Jewish people talking about it. Basically all it took was one completely unsourced post claiming goblincore was inherantly antisemitic and hundreds of people uncritically reblogged as is the nature of this site.
I actually made a list a while back of different goblins in folklore with this issue in mind but I didn’t realize Jewish folklore also had goblins!
bearing in mind that a lot of my readings on this were texts that are not digitized (or not readily accessible online), and i don’t have copies of my own, but here’s some info on those:
lantukh(er) or lantekh: most likely derived from mistransliterations of the French lutin into Hebrew script (source; i’ve actually read this and i can see about digging up the relevant passages for this and the rest if anyone really needs access), a lantukh is a vaguely described creature most often seen hiding in shadows and darkness. The common attributes include a love of mischief ranging from harmless to violent depending on whether the lantukh has been slighted; Isaac Bashevis Singer (if i am remembering my sources correctly) gave the translation as “brownie” in reference to said fey’s reputation for switching from benevolent to malicious depending on its treatment, and some sources suggest lantukher often take up residences in human homes. Others put them solely in lonely places; a particularly unusual characteristic is their association with impossibly long tongues, either as an illusion they create or a genuine physical attribute, allowing them to reach across great distances (per stories repeated in first source). Whether they are smaller than humans is often implied or left ambiguous, but often not outright stated.
kapelyushnikle(ch/kh): translatable as “hat-wearers” or “hatters”, kapelyushniklech are very small people who… wear hats. Presumably nice, visually distinctive hats. They are attributed a mischievous character linked to human-owned cows and horses, stealing milk from the former (source) and harassing the latter (source). They seem to appear in groups of two or more, unlike the usually solitary lantukh, and stories seem to focus on their capture and bargaining for their freedom.
what ALSO annoys me about saying goblins are antisemetic is that we actually do have very recent antisemetic propaganda that depicted jews as inhuman creatures: the nazis called us rats. juden raus, jewish rats. get it? small, dark, pointy noses. done and done. they didn’t fuck around being coy and subtle and magical and calling us anything as allegorically sophisticated as goblins. we were so much less human to them.
they called us rats and then they exterminated us by the millions and that was that. the hatred was naked and open and obvious and extremely efficient, and still is today. trump and his cadre of american nazis use exactly the same language and the same dogwhistles. it’s not subtle. it’s not fancied up.
there’s a reason the graphic novel Maus used rodents to depict the jews: that’s what we were called when they killed us.
so when people today are earnestly pointing at any fictional creature that’s ugly and weird and greedy and saying ‘this must be an allegory for jews!’ i think the antisemitism is coming from inside the fucking haus.
tw// explosion
Hello, hope all of you are safe and doing well.
You may have heard of what happened in Lebanon today and if not, basically, there was a big explosion in Beirut that affected many cities, destroyed shops, homes, cars, caused many injuries and deaths. The cause is uncertain.
As a fellow lebanese myself (that also lives there), today was absolutely terrifying, probably the scariest moments of my life. We heard a deafening sound as the floors were shaking. Some of us thought it was an attack, others thought it was an earthquake. As soon as it ended many expected a second one, which luckily never happened.
Here's a video of what happened that was sent to me, there are also many others that you can find online.
Windows were broken, doors wrecked, cars flipped over, buildings collapsed, people hit by flying or falling objects, and unfortunately, many didn't make it out alive.
We were one of the lucky ones, our families and friends were all safe and our homes were fine.
Some people couldn't even get out of the crumbling builings, so we saw corpses being pulled out, although some people survived the crash. But wherever we looked, there was blood, poeple were half covered in it, their shirts, pants, hair, everything. And that sight was traumatizing.
We watched the news with elders severely injured, children with blood-spattered shirts and people in pain that couldn't get in the hospitals because they were full.
Some people are missing. Just try to imagine the pain and fear their families and friends are feeling.
Articles about what happened, there are a lot more
Not only are we in the middle of a pandemic, but Lebanon is also going through a very serious economical crisis. To give you an example, before, $1 equaled 1 500 lebanese pounds. Nowadays, $1 equals more than 7 000 lebanese pounds. Not to mention that we obviously don't have any dollars at disposition, so yeah we're fucked.
People are hungry, homeless, unemployed. And even if they are getting paid, it'll be useless since the prices of everything went up because they were affected by the economical fiasco.
Important additional information
Today, I heard my 7 year old cousins scream in fear that they were going to die. I saw my aunt shaking, worried that her children won't survive. I saw my dad freak out while trying to reassure us when we both knew that we were uncertain about the next minutes of our lives. I heard the panic in the trembling voices of my family and friends as they couldn't believe what had just happened. I thought my loved ones and I were going to die in the next seconds.
I'm never forgetting those moments and feelings.
I don't think signing petitions will help, i don't even know if the following links will help either, I just know Lebanon and it's people are desperate for anything because the future of this country is extremely uncertain.

I think donating to the red cross would be the most helpful, so if you are considering it, it'd be great.
There are so many great threads on twitter about what you can do to help, just search help lebanon or something to find them. Also if you can, please donate, and as I said, the lebanese pound is pretty much worthless currently so USD is way more useful to us.
People have written a lot of touchy-feely pieces on this subject but I thought I’d get right to the heart of the matter

Firefighter demonstrates how to put out a kitchen fire
Reblog to actually save a life
To explain. The latter works because you’re cutting off the supply of oxygen to the fire and suffocating it
as opposed to slapping oxygen inside the pan with the downward motion
Reblogging, because this is so important. When I was learning how to cook for myself in my tweens, I had at least a five years of fire safety seminars from school drilling this into my head, and I STILL had that instinctive put-the-fire-out-with-water reflex. Didn’t even think. I saw our oily burner catch fire after frying eggs, whipped around towards the sink for water, and my brain immediately screamed NO!!! NO WATER! I mean that fire safety stuff straight up bitchslapped me out of REFLEXIVELY setting my house on fire. I found a pot lid and inched it over the burner before turning off the heat. Even if you think you know this stuff, panic is powerful shit. Make knowledge more powerful.
the Lebanese red cross is a charity that many Lebanese citizens endorse and are asking for others to donate to. As of right now (11:30 EST on the fifth), it’s the most up-to-date info I can find. If you don’t know what’s up, Beirut suffered a chemical explosion the size of a small nuke (which is still fucking huge.) They have a host of other serious and deadly crises (humanitarian/political/social) going on right now, too, and the explosion destroyed their main port, where a lot of their trade and necessary supplies (such as medical supplies) come in. Please, if you can, help Lebanon recover from this blow and tackle the rest of their problems. They need help.
