Growing Up

JJ Maybank x Reader

Word count - 7,353 words

College brings new opportunities for the pogues.

You couldn’t close your eyes without seeing him.

You couldn’t even blink without seeing his messy blond hair and blue eyes staring back at you. It was both a comfort and a nightmare.

He still haunted you.The ghost of JJ Maybank.

You knew it was bad. JJ and John B’s boat had gone down almost two years earlier. You had to get over it. So much had changed without them, everyone being forced to adjust.

You and Pope were going to college in the fall. Both on full ride scholarships. Pope was going to Duke. That was beyond amazing. He deserved it. School was what he had thrown himself into. He had shoved you into the water with excitement when he opened his letter, too busy fawning over it to hear your protests.

You decided to go to Christopher Newport University up in Virginia. It was still close to home, but far enough to not bring up memories around every corner. Your friends made you promise to visit whenever you could, but understood the distance you were making for your sanity. In return, you made Kie promise free food at the restaurant.

Kie was staying back, taking on more responsibility at The Wreck. She was gonna inherit it one day, so she and her parents thought it best that she started her training as soon as possible. When you asked about it, Kie waved it off, saying college wasn’t her thing.

No one knew what Sarah was doing. You figured that she was probably going to be a UNC girl like she used to always talk about. She had thoroughly distanced herself from the three of you, so you weren’t certain. Her brother and dad had both been sent to prison on the mainland, so she was suffering just as much, if not more, than y’all.

If JJ and John B had been there, you knew they wouldn’t have gone to college. JJ probably would’ve stuck with Mr. Heyward since Pope was leaving. John B would have done whatever his father did; salivating over shipwrecks and dealing with shady people. Neither of them had ever been big fans of school.

Of course if they had still been around, they might’ve taken their junior and senior years more seriously, but you would forever remember them as the class clowns of freshman and sophomore year. They’d probably love that reputation.

But more than schools had changed. Pope and Kie had started being disgustingly cute together, making you the permanent third wheel. You had loved JJ with every fiber of your being, so you just couldn’t be like that with anyone.

So instead, you started spending the occasional nights with Kelce. He was cute, knew what he was doing, and didn’t look like JJ. The nights started becoming more and more frequent, but you didn’t love each other. There were no feelings involved in your arrangement. You two were just lonely together. You weren’t what he was looking for and he wasn’t what you were looking for. Just a distraction from your problems.

Sarah and Topper had turned into an on-and-off relationship. You only heard bits and pieces as you left rooms with Kelce, but it sounded like Topper was still in his puppy dog love with the Cameron girl while Sarah was indifferent and just looking for a thrill. She hadn’t cheated on him since John B, but they had petty fights all the time.

JJ’s dad, Luke, had packed up and left. It was rumoured he went to Raleigh, but you didn’t know for sure. In actuality, you were glad he had gone. Now you didn’t have to see his face in town and be flooded with memories of JJ’s bruises and tears. It only took his child getting lost at sea and leaving him with a 30k debt to make the scumbag bolt. Good riddance. Some newlyweds bought the house. You hoped they would give it a chance to see a kid raised the right way, instead of the Luke Maybank way.

The Chateau was boxed up, cleaned up, and put up on the market, courtesy of John B’s uncle finally returning from who knows where. A nice family with three little girls had moved in not three months earlier. You babysat them sometimes while their parents worked late shifts or had a date night. Pope kept the van for himself though, and you had the HMS Pogue docked at your house for new adventures.

Midsummers came. Pope got the night off and twirled Kie around the dance floor, making her giggle. You were Kelce’s plus one, and spent the night chugging drinks and appreciating the high thread count sheets and feathery pillows back in his bedroom. His parents had met you before and gave you forced smiles when they saw you on his arm at the party. You grimaced back cautiously before Kelce dragged you off to the men’s room for twenty minutes.

On your eighteenth birthday, you forced Kie and Pope to go to the tattoo parlour with you, since you were the last to become a legal adult. The three of you got identical J’s on your bodies. You behind your left ear, Kie on the right side of her ribs, and on Pope’s right wrist. The J was for both JJ and John B, obviously. You cried after you got the tattoo, though it was more from pent up emotions than pain from the needle. Your stages of grief were up and over. You all had accepted that they were gone, lost to the Atlantic, unlike John B’s denial with his father.

And then the two year anniversary came. You dressed in black and broke down as soon as you saw your best friends. The three of you sat on the dock, huddled together for hours. Sarah even came out and joined, holding onto you for dear life as you two mourned your old boyfriends. Were they considered exes now? You didn’t care.

Summer was passing quickly in Kildare county. August eventually snuck out, and the next thing you knew, Pope was doing the stupidest, cutest, Pope-thing you could imagine. He got down on one knee for Kie. You had been charged with hiding in the bushes and taking pictures. Kie started fanning herself, and Pope assured her that they didn’t have to get married right away, but that that rock on her finger would be a comfort that he was loving her with his whole heart, even all the way from Durham, and that he would be there for her for the rest of their lives. You had no idea how Pope got that nice of a ring. Kie said yes.

You had to be at CNU by the last week of August. You packed your things, loading them up in your old Jeep. Your parents couldn’t get off work to drive you down, and Pope had to be at Duke the next day. You kissed Kelce for the last time, officially ending your benefits thing. Kie and Pope sandwiched you between them. You called them Mom and Dad as a joke, resulting in two very offended Pogues. Sarah even saw you off. You were right, she was gonna be a tarheel. Pope shivered when he heard that. The Duke-UNC rivalry had already sunk it’s claws into your friends.

As soon as the ferry took off, Kie called you. She claimed that she missed you already, and if you didn’t come back for Thanksgiving, she’d come to Virginia and drag you back herself. Pope spammed you with trivia about Virginia and Christopher Newport. You cried in your car as the ferry carried you further and further away.

You settled into a rhythm instantly. Your roommate was like the girl version of Pope, mannerisms, math team and all. Her name was Piper. You two became fast friends and did almost everything together. You wanted to be a history teacher, to teach the upcoming generations about the triumphs and tragedies of the world. You already knew you’d make a big deal about the Royal Merchant. After all, it had changed your life.

By October, you had a boyfriend. He was a blond sophomore named Connor. He was addicted to skateboarding and nicotine. You told Kie and Pope about him during your weekly calls. Kie was proud of you, congratulating you on getting the closest thing to a surfer your school had to offer. Pope was suspicious that he sounded too much like JJ, but you quickly dismissed his concerns. JJ was your first love. You never truly get over your first love. You’d always love JJ. But JJ wasn’t there anymore. Pope let it go reluctantly.

In November, you said bye to Piper and sped twenty miles over the speed limit down the highway, trying to get to your friends and family as quickly as possible. You got pulled over, and were forced to set aside two hundred bucks for the ticket. That still didn’t discourage you. But you only drove five miles over, instead of the twenty from there on. Kie hung onto you like a koala bear, finally letting go when she and Pope had their dramatic, movie worthy reunion. Pope burnt the turkey for friendsgiving three hours later.

Connor got you a tennis bracelet for Christmas. It was the nicest piece of jewelry you owned, and it came from your boyfriend of two months. You got him a new skateboard, and materials to customize it to his liking. Again, you sped down to North Carolina, showering your friends with presents. Kie and Pope were acting like an old married couple and got offended when you pointed it out for the second time in four months. They secretly loved it.

Sarah was your New Year’s kiss. She joked that it was the most action she had got since she left for college. You just winked, making her giggle. Sarah and Topper had broken up in August right before she left, and hadn’t yet gotten back together. Apparently he was at Brown University, doing heaven knows what, and hadn’t come back for the holidays. She claimed she didn’t care. All four of you cried when it was time to go, leaving Kie alone again.

On Valentine’s Day, Connor told you he loved you. You repeated it back. And you meant it. You really did love him. He held you when you got nightmares and made you laugh with jokes and skateboard tricks. Connor made you happy. Why wouldn’t you love him? Piper got a date with some girl in her Russian Lit class. She turned red with embarrassment as you whooped with pride at her news. The girl’s name was Katie, which made you smile.

You didn’t go back to the Outer Banks for Spring Break. Connor took you up to Washington DC to meet his parents and touristy sightseeing. You were both still underage and legally couldn’t enjoy other students’ trips to Mexico or The Bahamas, no matter how much you really wanted to see the Caribbean. Pope got Kie to take a week off work, and they spent Spring Break at a turtle rehabilitation facility. She gushed about it for a week.

You crammed for finals, went to parties, called your friends, pranked Piper, loved Connor, and did all the college things you could before summer. You had already agreed that Connor would stay half the summer with you to meet your parents and friends, before going back up to DC. Life just felt right. It was the best it could be. You were fully and truly happy, something you would not have thought possible earlier. You had finally bounced back.

You didn’t speed when you went down the highway to the ferry, not wanting Connor to fear for his life. You were a good driver sometimes, but not when you had places to be and people to see. Basically, you couldn’t drive normally when you knew something was waiting on you. Like your best friends and parents. Your boyfriend had never been to the Outer Banks before. You told him you’d show him the touristy spots of your town too.

Kie and Pope liked Connor, but they didn’t love him. However, they had seen your social media posts and heard your raves, so they kept their mouths shut about the matter. You could tell though. Those two were an open book to you. You ran into Kelce for the first time. It wasn’t awkward though. Connor was holding your hand and Kelce had his arm around some girl. You both did the grimace thing that his parents did.

Late June had a hurricane blow in. You hunkered down at your parents’ house, distracting your terrified boyfriend from the storm with baby photos of you. Thankfully, it wasn’t as bad as Agatha had been three years prior. Air conditioning and cell towers still worked. You gave Connor a reward for making it through. And then three more after that.

It was two days later when Kie called you in a panic, sounding like she was bawling. You and Connor quickly rushed toward The Wreck, ready to kick the a of whoever had made her cry. Even if it was Pope. You burst into the restaurant, ignoring the closed sign. Kie had her head down on a table by the window. You asked what Pope had done. She quickly shook her head, denying that Pope had done anything. When you asked who had, she simply pointed out the window. To two very familiar, supposedly dead, ghost people. You fainted in shock.

You woke up to see who you thought was Connor looking down at you. But then you remembered that Connor had brown eyes. This blurry person had blue. So, you did the first thing you could think of. You sucker punched him, making him fall back in surprise. You scrambled up, looking around for Connor or Kie. Your boyfriend stood there, looking at you in awe. You quickly threw yourself at him, before turning your head to see your victim.

You had just punched JJ fucking Maybank in the face. The supposedly dead, almost three years missing, your first love, JJ Maybank. You nearly fainted again, but Connor kept you up. You scanned the room again, now focusing on the crying Kie, Pope holding her, and utterly confused John B. John B! You quickly sent Sarah a text to get to The Wreck as quickly as possible while JJ stood up in shock.

“What the hell are you doing here?” Your voice croaked.

JJ just stared at Connor’s arms around you. John B spoke up. “We got a bit held up.”

“For three years?!” You hadn’t known that you had been harbouring anger towards them, but you were now pretty upset. “We thought you were dead!”

“Hey Y/N, I got your text, what do-” Sarah walked in, eyes landing on John B. She crumpled to the ground instantly. You broke free from Connor, rushing to the girl to try to tend to her.

“You’ve been alive this whole time?!” Kie yelped.

“You don’t sound as happy as we thought.” JJ murmured.

“Happy? You want me to be happy that my friends disappeared off the face of the Earth without a second thought for how I would feel about that?!” Kie was getting mad too.

“Calm down,” JJ made a face.

“Don’t tell my fiancee to calm down.” Pope spluttered as Kie’s face started turning a shade of red you’d never seen before.

“Fiancee?” JJ and John B both saw the ring on Kie’s finger at the same time, their eyes comically widening.

Sarah snapped back to consciousness, you gestured to Connor, making him help you pick her up.

“I did not see that one coming.” John B shook his head.

“And who’s this chump?” JJ nodded towards Connor.

You rolled your eyes, putting your hand on Connor’s chest. “This chump is my boyfriend, Connor.”

“They’re disgustingly cute.” Sarah chimed in half-heartedly.

You smiled up at Connor. He gave you a quick kiss. When you looked back, JJ was looking at you with an unreadable expression.

“I saw her on the lawn with her roommate, Piper, in the first week of school, and it took me almost two months to find the courage to ask her out.” Connor beamed down at you. You felt yourself melt.

“School?” John B spoke up. “But you graduated.”

“College, idiot.” You rolled your eyes playfully. “Connor and I go to Christopher Newport.”

“And Pope goes to Duke.” Kie smiled proudly at her fiance. “And Sarah, UNC. I’m in training to own this place.”

“You all went to college?” JJ asked.

“Yeah, we grew up.” Pope still sounded hostile from earlier. “Our lives didn’t stop, so we moved on.”

Both JJ and John B looked hurt at this. It was true though. They couldn’t have thought that everything would be the same when they got back. Surely they weren’t that stupid.

“Y/N even got with Kelce.” Sarah snorted from her chair. “Several times.”

You turned around and smacked her on the arm. “Shut up, I was seventeen.”

“You broke up with him in August.” She teased.

“And it’s June, and I have a new boyfriend who I love very much.” You paused. “And you can’t talk, Mrs. Topper. I couldn’t keep up with your relationship.”

Sarah scoffed. “Whatever. Face it, neither of us can compete with the lovebirds,”

You both turned to face Kie and Pope. They fit together like puzzle pieces. You didn’t believe in soulmates until you saw them together. They were the prime example of a perfect relationship. Plus their future together made sense. Kie and their future little Heyward babies would run the restaurant while Pope worked at the coroner’s office at the Police Department.

Sarah would most likely take over Rose’s real estate business and fuel the next generation of Kooks. You would probably end up at some middle school wherever your future family took you. If things with Connor worked out, you’d probably go with him to DC, making the perfect picket fence life your parents could never give you.

Connor put his arm around your waist. You felt JJ staring at his hand on your butt. For the first time in three years, you let yourself think about you and JJ. You had had time to grieve and get over, but he might’ve held onto it as a sort of comfort blanket. Did he think you would be waiting for him patiently? Knowing him, that probably still didn’t stop him from getting up close and personal with some of the finest girls the Bahamas had to offer. Or just any girls for that matter.

First loves never go out; they just dim.

You, Sarah, and the lovebirds don’t let go of your resentment, but eased off your friends, relieved that they’re alive and okay. Missing is better than dead after all. They are quickly reintroduced into society. John B teared up when he realized someone else had the Chateau now, and JJ gaped at Pope in awe when he told him his dad ditched. They’re both legal adults though, so they’re on their own. Pope got JJ a permanent job with his dad and John B went to find work at the boatyard. They both loved your tattoos.

Midsummers came again, and you introduced your boyfriend to your bathroom stall tradition. Kooks that hadn’t seen Kie since last summer cooed over her ring, and Pope preened in their approval. Sarah and Topper finally reunited for the first time in a year, but you couldn’t tell whether they were happy or upset about it. Neither JJ nor John B’s eyes left you and Sarah the whole night, making you self conscious as you slowly danced with Connor. That was something they would both have to work on.

And then Connor was gone, back to DC until September. You kissed him goodbye sweetly before he got on the ferry, making him promise to call when he got home. He never called. You got upset, choosing not to call him until he called you. Kie rubbed your back to calm you down, telling you he probably just forgot. That didn’t make you feel any better.

You took Pope and Sarah out for a ride on the HMS Pogue while the rest of your friends worked. They started arguing about the Blue Devil versus Tarheel rivalry, both claiming their school would kick the other’s butt in football and basketball. You stayed quiet, watching the exchange like a tennis match and keeping score. Pope won the argument. He started bringing out statistics and Sarah plugged her ears. Sometimes math team can help.

When you got back, you had a thirty minute voicemail from Connor. Confused, you locked yourself in the bathroom to listen. He confessed to cheating on you with a girl from his high school, but claimed he still loved you and didn’t want your relationship to end. You screamed in anguish, shattering the mirror with a punch and curling, up on the floor, crying and clutching your bloody fist. It was John B that found you like that, kicking the door down to get to you.

It was your nineteenth birthday two days later. Sarah dragged you out of bed and made you shower. Kie forced applesauce down your throat. Nine months. All you could think about was wasting nine months of your life on that cheating scumbag. And you still loved him. Fate had been so cruel to you. Your friends threw a kegger, so you got drunk and went home with Kelce, just like you had the last time you had been heartbroken.

You stumbled into your house early in the morning. Your hair was messed up, you were in one of Kelce’s shirts, and your feet hurt from walking home barefoot. You were crying softly. All your friends were waiting in your kitchen. JJ shot you a sad look as you came in.

“Where have you been?” Kie shrieked, rushing over and taking you in her arms.

“Kelce’s.” You answer honestly, squinting at the light. Kie smacked you on the back of the head.

“Kelce’s? Seriously?”

“Sorry mother.” You rolled your eyes, running your hand through your hair.

“You gotta stop going to Kelce after every break up. That’s unhealthy.” Pope shook his head.

“It worked after JJ left.” You shrugged. “No offense J.” You nodded at the blond, who actually looked very offended. Sarah giggled.

“At least she left her room.”

“Her room is better than Kelce’s.” Kie grumbles.

“Nah, he has a way nicer bed.” You wink. “Now can I change? I’m still in his shirt.”

You quickly get ushered to your bedroom by John B. The brunet had unofficially officially moved in with your family until he got on his feet and had enough to rent a place with JJ. JJ was staying at the Heywards in the meantime. So was Kie. Sarah still lived in the ginormous lonely house with her stepmom and little sister. Wheezie was now sixteen and didn’t bother her as much. She smoked with you sometimes when she was feeling rebellious.

The six of you go out surfing for the rest of the day, catching up on everything and anything. You find out about Sarah getting to third base with the UNC lacrosse captain on the actual baseball field and Pope getting repeatedly prepositioned from a guy in his biology class. Apparently John B had dyed his hair black for a year and JJ had diamond stud earrings, but let the holes heal. You told them about drawing a Hitler mustache on your roommate’s face while she slept and Kie talking about the weird orders from one of her customers.

The last week of August arrived too soon, and before you knew it, you were driving back onto the ferry with all your boxes in the back after promising another year of weekly calls. You and Piper were signed up to be roommates again and you wanted to hear every detail of her disastrous sounding family vacation to The Middle of Nowhere, Nebraska she had been complaining to you about. You wanted to know if her dad actually made her visit a meat packing plant.

There was a mono outbreak around campus in November, so instead of going home for friendsgiving, you were stuck with a puking Piper in a forced dorm quarantine. You facetimed Kie during the dinner and ate ramen while your friends dug into a turkey together. Piper started throwing up again, so you had to hang up early to help get her back into bed when she finished. You knew that you would probably get it next, but at least you weren’t cursing your friends with Piper’s germs.

Thankfully, you came home for Christmas. Your friends freaked when they saw you. Midterms were a killer this year. You had giant purple bags under your eyes and you were wearing the biggest wrinkly sweatshirt they had ever seen. Sarah made you go straight to bed and JJ brought you hot chocolate. You showered him and John B with gifts since it was their first Christmas back. JJ got you a pair of gold earrings and blushed when you kissed him on the cheek as a thank you.

Pope and Kie got married over spring break in April. Right on the beach. You were the maid of honor. You cried more than Kie did. She looked gorgeous in her white dress. The priest had to steady Pope when he first saw her start the walk. You and Sarah were each other’s dates, dramatically swaying on the dance floor in each other’s arms. She left with John B an hour later, shooting you a thumbs up as he pulled her away. You caught the bouquet on accident, blushing as Kie whooped.

Piper dragged you to a frat party in May. She went off somewhere with a girl she liked, leaving you alone. One of the frat guys, Tanner, noticed you were alone and asked if you were okay. You smiled at him and started a conversation. The night ended with him showing you to his room upstairs. It was just for the night. Nothing serious.

It was not just for the night. You hadn’t seen Tanner since, but he left quite the impression. A very positive impression. You didn’t even have to read between the lines. The frat boy left you with a fetus. You couldn’t find Tanner anywhere. There was no way to contact him. No social media, no one recognizing the name. And then it clicked. The bastard had given you a fake name. But all the frat guys looked the same, so you couldn’t give a description to track him down. Oh my god.

The second the school year was over, you raced back to the Outer Banks as fast as you could, throwing your things into boxes and quickly shouting at Piper to call you when she got home. You texted Kie and Sarah that you had an emergency and to meet you at your house as soon as possible. You friends responded quickly, banging on your front door minutes later. You threw John B out and told him to come back later before ushering your girl friends in.

“What’s the emergency?” Kie was panicking, already assuming the worst.

“Is everything okay?” Sarah was equally concerned.

You didn’t say anything, instead making them sit on the couch while you went and pulled up a chair.

“Sarah.” You smiled sadly at the blonde. “Kiara.” Another smile directed towards the brunette. “My best friends. I did something. Something bad.”

“Did you kill someone?!” Sarah whisper-yelled.

“No! No.” You assured her. “I uh, I met a guy at a party.”

“Oh my god did he force-” Kie started but you quickly cut her off.

“No! No. We both wanted it. But that’s not my emergency.” You shook your head, wrapping your arms around your stomach. “When I mean I did something, I mean I created something.”

Understanding instantly appeared on both of their faces. Sarah’s eyes widened comically. Kie’s jaw dropped.

“Lord have mercy.” Kie whispered.

You continued on, wanting to get it over with. “And so I go to find him, you know, cause it’s just as much his as mine. But it’s been a month, and he’s just gone. So I ask around, and no one’s heard of him. That’s when I realized he gave me a fake name. I don’t even know who this dude is.”

“That son of a bitch!” Sarah hissed, standing up indignantly.

“What are you gonna do?” Kie reached over, grabbing your hand.

“You know what I have to do.” You frowned. Sarah nodded in understanding while Kie just squeezed your hand even tighter. “I’m not even twenty yet.”

You made them promise not to tell anyone else and the two of them stayed over with you, cuddling in your bed. In the morning you made an appointment over on the mainland for right before Midsummers. Sarah held your hair back for morning sickness while Kie called her husband to make excuses for your disappearances. John B hadn’t come back so you assumed he crashed at the Heywards. Sarah and him were in an awkward place anyway. They were consistently getting it on whenever she was back from school, but neither one of them could put a label on it.

Thankfully you don’t show and Kie whisked you off to the mainland at dawn of the appointment date. Sarah knew what day it was and had been charged with making excuses. John B would probably blindly accept whatever she said, but Pope and JJ would be more suspicious of the fact that you and Kie had spirited away without telling anyone. Especially Pope. Kie told him everything. Everything but this.

Three hours later, you had your head down on the table of an ice cream shop. Kie insisted on getting some sugar into your body. The summer day was making your skin sticky with sweat and the cold metal table was helping you cool down. Kie slid a cup of rocky road in front of you. You reluctantly sat up, shoveling the dessert into your mouth until you paused with a brain freeze. Kie giggled at your silly expression. A quick buzz on your phone informed you that Sarah said you went to the good movie theater to see a romcom as an early birthday present for you.

John B asked Sarah out just in time for Midsummers. He smiled at her like she was the only girl in the world. Pope and Kie pulled out all the stops they could afford in order to celebrate their first Midsummers as husband and wife. JJ was working the grill with Mr. Heyward. Kelce had brought home a serious girlfriend from UPENN and they were adorable together. So you twirled Wheezie around the dance floor, teasing the seventeen year old girl about the teenagers she kept glancing at behind you. You stole a few sips from Topper’s flask after his mother cornered you about how Sarah was  doing.

JJ kissed you on your birthday. You were laying out in your yard, stargazing with your friends. Kie had fallen asleep in Pope’s arms. Sarah and John B were arguing about something that had happened on their diving trip. JJ was lying next to you. Both of you were quiet. Then all of a sudden, he leaned over, quickly kissing you, and then went back to his original position like he hadn’t done anything. You stayed silent, but moved a little closer, making him smile.

He didn’t kiss you again until you were about to leave for your junior year of college. Your friends were gathered by your car as you said your goodbyes. His phone kept buzzing. Pope finally made him check it. He saw that it was Mr. Heyward and sighed. JJ leaned in, kissing you sweetly and walking away casually like he hadn’t done anything, ignoring you and your friends’ confused faces. You pressed your hand to your lips, shrugging when Kie shot you a look.

It was New Years the next time. You all were holding glasses of champagne from Pope’s first legal alcohol run.The ball dropped and your cheer was cut off by his lips on yours. He didn’t hold back. You dropped your champagne in surprise. JJ just smirked as you blushed and apologized for being so clumsy. He hadn’t kissed you like that since you were sixteen.

JJ sent you flowers and a card on Valentine’s Day. I’ve loved you for six years and waited for you for four of them. Don’t make me wait any longer. Love, J. Piper squealed when she saw them, demanding to know everything about him. You left him a message on his phone that night. “Then don’t.”

Pope and Kie finally got their honeymoon a whole year later. They went to Florida during his spring break for surfing and turtles and love. You helped pick up slack at The Wreck while she was gone. JJ came in after work everyday and sat at the bar, shamelessly flirting with you until your shift was over and then you would let him kiss you. He even confessed his love in person, making you practically jump on him. The boy finally put a label on it, almost a year after he had kissed you under the stars.

Pope visited you at CNU. You finally introduced him to Piper and they hit it off. Pope even started bringing out the mathlete stories, making Piper start telling hers. If you heard the words cosine and tangent one more time, you were going to smother yourself with the feather pillow you stole from Kelce. You made up for it by dragging the two of them to Jamestown so you could practice teaching children. Pointing this out offended both of them.

Piper made you go on her family vacation with her in June. Her dad even offered to pay, which you gladly accepted after making it look like a tough decision. They let you and Piper go out and explore Austin, Texas at night. That resulted in you leaving five voicemails on how much you loved your friends and Piper hitting on a graffitied boulder. You got back to the hotel safely and her parents thankfully overlooked your underage drunken state.

You dragged Piper down the Outer Banks to meet your family too. Your mother loved her and your father gave his stamp of approval. John B had finally saved enough to start paying for a little house with JJ near the Heywards, and both boys had moved in. Kie and Pope were also making a little nest egg to get a house when Pope graduated in a year. Piper wanted to be a science teacher, and you were trying to convince her to come teach and live in the Outer Banks with you.

Piper fell in love with Wheezie the moment she saw her. It was true that the eighteen year old girl had grown into her looks and was becoming more confident, responsible, successful and was impressively attending UVA in the fall. But it was still Wheezie. She was like a little sister to you. You just gaped at Piper when she told you, looking like a fish out of water. But sure enough, Wheezie liked anyone and everyone, and she was of age. They started macking at the kegger that was being thrown on the beach, fully surprising Sarah.

JJ’s arms were strong and warm and you felt safe in them. He chuckled into your ear as you tried to hold yourself closer to your boyfriend as the two of you swayed. It was Midsummers once again. You could feel his hands on you through the fabric of your dress. It was a bit of a mystery of how a pogue like you was consistently getting into this event, but you just knew the right people. You continued swaying, ignoring the whispers like you did every year.

Almost all of your friends were blacked out. All of them but you and JJ. It was really the best way to celebrate your twenty-first; by showing off your alcohol tolerance as compared to your friends. You had Piper as a roommate, who was always dragging you out and about, and JJ was JJ, no explanation needed. The two of you snuck out of the house, going back to lay down on your yard and stargaze once again.

“I’m gonna marry you someday, ya know that?” his voice was so soft that you almost missed it. But you didn’t.

“Really?” You smiled, turning away from the sky to look at your boyfriend.

“Really.” He turned his head to look at you as well. “I’ve known since I was fourteen.”

You giggled. “And why wasn’t I told this earlier?”

“Because fourteen year old me was a creep and you wouldn’t have believed him.”

“Very true.” You nodded. “I even thought you were playing a prank on me when you asked me out. Some kind of sick joke that fourteen year old boys found funny.”

“But you still said yes?” JJ raised an eyebrow.

“Well, I figured that even if it was fake, at least you would know how I felt.” You shook your head, laughing silently. JJ reached over and grabbed you, pulling you to him.You didn’t resist or pull away. The two of you laid there, under the stars, until you fell asleep and he dutifully carried you inside.

It was your last year of college. That was a big deal. You already had saved the dates for Pope and Sarah’s graduation. Piper was already panicking about the future, ignoring your ‘one day at a time’ mantra. John B still didn’t even know how to pay bills without your help for Pete’s sake. JJ was being even clingier than usual and whining about his girlfriend abandoning him for a whole year. You told him to hush.

Sarah decided that she wanted to drive up to Christopher Newport with you to see the campus and help you set up your final dorm. In the three years that you had both been attending universities, this was the first time either one of you went to the other’s campus. Piper got excited when she saw the older Cameron girl and asked a million questions about Wheezie.

It was Halloween when you got a weird call. You were in a frat bathroom, plugging your other ear with your finger in order to hear the nurse better. JJ was in the hospital for poisoning. The numbnut ate moldy bread and had a bad reaction to it. You were his emergency contact. You just sighed, rolling your eyes at your boyfriend’s stupidity, and gave the nurse Kie’s number. God, you were in love with a brainless blond bimbo.

It wasn’t until Friendsgiving that you had the chance to come home and reprimand him in person. He saw you get out of your car and puckered up in preparation. Instead, you thumped JJ on the back of the head.

“What kind of idiot eats moldy bread?!”

“Mold is an organism. You can eat those!”

You thumped him again.

“No you can’t.”

“It’s been like a month, why are you bringing this up now?”

Kie and Pope were wearing matching reindeer onesies on Christmas morning. You and Sarah cooed while JJ and John B laughed. Pope ignored them, grabbing his wife’s hand and kissing her ring. Without even realizing that you were doing it, your eyes drifted down to your bare left hand. You snapped up, pretending it never happened, but JJ had been watching. He knew what you were thinking.

JJ came up to CNU on Valentine’s. You kicked Piper out to spend it with her lady lover of the week. He brought whipped cream and strawberries and it took you an hour to thoroughly clean it all up after he left. You felt good for the next two days, limping around campus as Piper winked knowingly at you.

You and Sarah dragged your boyfriends down to Miami for Spring Break. You partied, drank, and smoked for a week straight. Pope and Kie were both working to save up more for their house, but you called them and made them have a nice dinner on their two year anniversary. You had the worst hangover of your life that week, but it was so worth it to get away from the stress of school and be with your boyfriend.

The cap wouldn’t stay on your head properly and Piper had to stab your scalp with seven bobby pins until it finally stopped moving around. The dark blue graduation gown was itchy and hugged your body weird. Your name was called and you blushed violently as your friends and family whooped as loudly as they could while you crossed the stage.

As soon as the ceremony was over, you sprinted as fast as you could towards your parents, almost knocking them over. You had done it. You had graduated college. Your friends quickly joined in on the hug, crushing you with all their might. Kie squealed in your ear and your father rubbed your back.

You finally pulled away, only to instantly have JJ’s lips on yours. You melted into the kiss, not caring that everyone was watching. JJ separated, still holding your face in your hands. You kept your eyes closed, still savoring the tingly feeling of joy running through your body.

A gasp from Sarah made you open your eyes, confused. JJ wasn’t in front of you anymore. You looked around, trying to see what Sarah had gasped at. And then you saw it too, another gasp escaping from you. JJ was down on one knee, holding up the prettiest ring you had ever seen.

“Remember when I told you I’ve known I was gonna marry you ever since I was fourteen?” He asked, smirking up at you.

You nodded stiffly, tears pricking at your eyes.

“I forgot to tell you that I’ve been saving for a ring since then too.”

The tears started pouring without care.

“Y/N, I’ve been in love with you for almost a decade. When I left, the thought of seeing you again was my only motivation. I came back to find out you had fallen in love with someone else when I was gone and my heart shattered. But I always knew you were the love of my life, and I wanted you to be happy, even if it wasn’t with me.” JJ started to choke up. “And then I got my second chance with you, and everything felt right again.”

You stepped forward, leaning down to take JJ’s face in your hands. You heard the clicks of cameras, but ignored them to stare right at your boyfriend, trying to communicate your love for him silently. Your graduation outfit was fluttering in the wind.

“I want to spend the rest of my life with you. Until death do us part, and then after that.” He smiled sweetly through his tears. “So, Y/N, whaddya say? Will you marry me?”

Your voice got caught in your throat. You couldn’t speak. The longer your silence, the more nervous JJ started to look.

“Y/N?”

“Yes!” you finally found your voice. “Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes!” You tackled your fiance, peppering his face with kisses.

He quickly pushed the ring onto your finger before pulling you into a tight embrace.

“I’m getting married!” You squealed excitedly. Your mother pushed past your friends and joined the hug with you and your fiance.

You couldn’t close your eyes without seeing him.

You couldn’t even blink without seeing his messy blond hair and blue eyes staring back at you. You couldn’t wait to wake up to that every morning until death did you part.

He was going to marry you.The love of your life, JJ Maybank.

THIS IS SOO GOOD OMG🥺🥺

••••

you were looking all over for him. you asked all your friends but they didn’t have any idea where he went either. no texts, no calls, no initial warning either. you were scared that the social worker came by and tried to take him to foster care, but jj had been in the chateau all day so that couldn’t have happened. you searched all over the island for him, no trace.

so waited on the couch will jj until he came home in the morning. he walked into the house, with a brand new outfit on that was definitely not cheap.

“john b where have you-“ you stood up.

he cut you off. “can you call the others and tell them to come here i have some news to share”

you stared at him in shock. he was gone all day and now won’t even let you ask for an explaination. you sat back down on the couch and started bouncing your leg back and fourth.

“hey y/n are you okay?” jj put his hand on your shoulder.

you moved so you could push it off. “i’m fine jj.” he could tell you were not even close to fine.

you stayed quiet and in the same spot on the couch until the others arrived. you walked out onto the porch to see your friends along with sarah cameron.

kie spoke up about it before you could. “excuse me what is she doing here?”

john b looked at sarah for a moment and you could see something in his facial expression. “she’s gonna help us find the gold”

“that’s bullshit wh-“

“kie she’s the one who brought me to the mainland today and help me find out stuff about it” oh. that’s why he was gone.

you felt like you shouldn’t have been upset but you were anyways. he was with her all day. you were dumb you knew she was a pretty girl. you were jealous. you got up and started heading into the house.

“y/n where are you going?” you heard your boyfriend’s voice call out from behind you. you didn’t turn back around and just kept walking.

you heard pope. “you idiot john b”

you plopped down onto your boyfriends bed. you waited and waited for about an hour until you heard footsteps in the house. you heard the door open but you didn’t turn to face it. you knew it was john b.

“y/n why did you walk out like that?” he asked walking slowly to you.

you turned your body so you were facing him. “john b i’m not trying to be a bitch but why are you so dumb?”

he looked at you in confusion. “wow so much for not being a bitch.”

“no john b you’re the one who spent all day ignoring your girlfriend just to find out that you were running around playing sugar mama with the hottest girl on the island” you scoffed at him.

“we weren’t playing sugar mama. you know how important this gold hunt is to me. and sarah was just helping”

“yeah right just helping my ass” you stood up and tugged on his new clothes “so what the fuck is this? because i know that all four of us pogues combined couldn’t afford this shit”

“y/n why do you have to be such a bitch all the time? all day i get no shit from sarah cameron and then i come home to be bitched around”

“yeah john b? well maybe you should go mack on sarah cameron then.” he looked at you with a shocked face not expecting you to say that. it finally clicked to you, the way he looked at her on the porch made sense now. “john b tell me you didn’t”

“y/n i swear- i- i- i- i didn’t mack on sarah cameron. come on babygirl you know i didn’t-“ there it was. the classic “john b giveaway”. he studder and the “babygirl”. he never called you that unless he did something wrong.

you felt tears in your eyes but you quickly wiped them away. “fuck you john b. we’re done.” you tried to move past him but he grabbed your arm. “let go you asshole” you pulled away until he finally let go.

you walked past jj sitting on the couch watching some tv show. “where are you going y/n?” you always liked jj. he was like your best friend and was always a sweetheart to you. you wished that jj was your boyfriend instead of john b because you know he wouldn’t do this to you. but he would always be like your big brother.

you turned and looked at him. “i’m going to go clear my head. bye jj” you never said bye, you felt like bye was the end so you always said see you later.

he walked up to you “y/n what happened?”

“john b cheated on me with sarah.” he went to pull you into a hug but it wasn’t what you needed. “jj i’m fine i don’t need a hug right now. but thank you i really appreciated you”

and with that you walked out of the chateau, hopefully for the last time. you headed to your car and started to drive. you didn’t even know where you were going until you ended up at the docks where your family boat was.

you weren’t very very poor, but you weren’t a kook either so it had its perks. was it safe to go boating at night? not very. did you anyways? of course you did. you drove yourself around water as tears slid down your face, god you wished you stole some beers from the fridge before you left.

after about 30 minutes you heard another boat. you ignored it because it could be anyone in outer banks. until you heard “if it isn’t the princess of the pogues”

you didn’t respond you just stayed quiet. the boat pulled next to you and you turned and looked at it’s driver right in the face. it was none other than rafe cameron, perfect timing to see the brother of the girl your boyfriend cheated you on with. the light illuminating from the lantern on his boat showed he had a smirk on his face, when he looked at your tear stained cheeks, in softened into concern.

“hey are you okay?” he asked you with what sounded like genuine concern. it was strange coming from the rudest kook of them all.

“rafe it doesn’t concern you. i’ll be fine”

“i don’t think you will princess. you look very upset right now” you shot your head up at the nickname. who does he think he is? “i was just playing y/n. but seriously you don’t look so hot”

“rafe i just don’t wanna talk about it. especially not with you” he held out his hand to you.

“you just seem super upset and look like you need to vent right now. come with me and we can talk if you want or we could go get food or something. you just need some cheering up.”

you hesitated. maybe it was because you were super upset and rafe was being kind, but it didn’t sound like a bad idea. you reached for his hand and he pulled you onto his boat. “wait what about my boat?”

“don’t worry princess i’ll tow it with mine” before you could even say anything about the nickname, he moved so he could tie your boat with his. you sat down and just looked at the floor of the boat. his was so much nicer than one you’ve ever been on.

“alright y/n so what do you wanna do on this night”

you didn’t look up at him. “ion know...” you started to play with the sleeves of your sweater. you started to notice that it was not your sweater it was john b’s. your heart twisted and you felt the tears starting to come again.

rafe heard you sniff and an idea popped into his head. “hey i got the perfect place for you you’re gonna love it” he wasn’t really sure how true that statement was due to the fact that this is the first ever time you guys have had a conversation.

you just stayed quiet as he started up the boat again. he started driving and soon enough you realized you weren’t on the cut anymore.

“hey rafe where are we going?” you asked with a little bit of panic in your voice.

he turned around for a moment and looked at your worried face. “hey don’t worry just trust me”

“i don’t know how easy that’ll be you kinda terrorize my friends” the last word felt weird in your mouth. we’re you even friends anymore? would they replace you with sarah?

“it doesn’t matter were here anyways” he pulled into the dock, right in front of his house. how convient to be a kook. he lead you off of the boat and into the house. he put a finger up to his lips indicating you had to be quiet. the house was massive but eventually, you made it to his door.

you stopped dead. “rafe whats about to happen..” you whispered slowly backing up.

he realized where your mind was going and instantly started to panic. “no no no y/n it’s not like that. this seems kind of sus but i promise you it’s not. nothing’s gonna happen i promise” he reached out for your hand and grabbed it. you followed rafe into his room and he stopped at his window and opened it. “come on y/n it’ll be fun”

you made it this far so you might as well had gone out the window. you climbed out and saw that you were standing on a nice little deck, the light from the window illuminating out into the darkness.

“hold on y/n i’ll be back” he climbed back inside only for you to stand outside by yourself. after about 5 minutes you started to get worried that he had left you out there, but then he came back and popped his head out the window. “here y/n can you take these?” he handed you a bunch of blankets and pillows and you placed them on the ground carefully. “okay now can you do me one more favor? can you go back inside and then close your eyes please?”

you complied but with confusion. after a few minutes of hearing rafe shuffle in and out of the room you felt his hand on your lower back. “okay keep them closed but let me lead you back out okay?” he reached for your hand not covering your eyes and held onto it. you squeezed it gently and he squeezed back. he lead you out the window and you felt the blankets under your feet. “you can open it now”

your vision cleared and you saw a beautiful sight in front of you, the blankets were laid on the ground, with two of them saved just in case it got cold, pillows scattered around the floor neatly, bags of chips, a few cans of truly lemonades, and fairy lights draped around the top of the banister. “rafe what is- why would you do this for me? you don’t even like me?”

“i don’t know y/n what it is but i’ve been sad before and no one was there to comfort me, so i didn’t want you to feel that way. we can just sit here and look at the stars and drink hard lemonade or we could talk about why you’re upset. we could do what you want”

you sat on the floor and started playing with the sleeves again. “i hate this stupid sweater.” you mubbled

“i don’t think it’s a stupid sweater”

“it’s john b’s” the name felt like acid in your mouth.

“is that why you’re upset over john b? did he break up with you”

“i broke up with him”

“wait what? why what even happened”

you thought for a second. how did you even end up here? why does rafe care so much about how you’re feeling? who does he think he is? you stood up. “rafe what are you even doing?” your change in tone made him flinch

he stood up with you “i just didn’t like seeing you upset..” you saw him for how he truly is in that moment. a boy who just wants people to be happy, someone who is still growing and learning. you didn’t see him as the kook who would insult your or your friends anymore, he was just rafe.

you instantly softened. “rafe i’m so sorry i just i’m just super upset i didn’t mean to lash out on you like that. you were just trying to help me out.” you didn’t even realize you were crying again until he wrapped him arms around you and started to rub your back. you felt comfort and safety, you started crying loud sobs.

“y/n you’ll be okay don’t worry. it’ll all be okay i promise” he said softly.

“he cheated on me” you said between your sobs. “he cheated on me with sarah”. you started to feel yourself gasping for as at this point and rafe tightened is hug.

“he never deserved you y/n. you’re the princess of your kingdom and he wasn’t even worthy enough stay in your castle” he lifted your legs up and you wrapped them around him so he could sit down and you were on his lap.

you looked into his deep blue eyes for a moment before studying him. the way his jaw was relaxed for once, his high cheekbones on his face, the sound of his breathing, the way his hands felt against your back. you didn’t know if what you’re were doing was right, but you did it anyways. you leaned in a planted a soft kiss on his lips. he melted into the kiss quickly but then pulled away.

“rafe i’m sorry i didn’t-“

he stopped you “y/n don’t be sorry. i just wanna be sure i’m not just your rebound from john b and that you actually want this.”

he didn’t want to be john b’s replacement for the time being. for once in your life you actually saw rafe cameron for who he was. someone who just wanted to be loved and cared for.

“i want this.” he leaned in again to place a kiss on your cheek this time.

“good i do too” he whispered. he started to kiss you all over your face.

“rafe?” he stopped and looked at your face for any sign of regret “i don’t wanna wear this anymore but i don’t want it to get sexual.”

he realized you were gesturing to your sweatshirt from your ex boyfriend. “nothing will happen if you don’t want it to princess”

“promise?”

“i promise y/n” you slid the hoodie off only to be left in your bralette. the cold air hit your upper body making you shiver. he looked at your chest, you didn’t blame him he is human after all. “i’ll make it fair” he chuckled as he started to take off his shirt too.

“i’m cold” he moved to grab the blanket and draped it around you. you snuggled more into his bare chest. you felt him place a kiss on top of your head and heard the can of the truly crack open. you felt him move his arm to take a sip out of the can and that’s the last thing you remember.

you woke up in a much bigger bed in a much better air conditioned room. it didn’t smell of john b. your eyes shot open and you instantly remembered where you were. you looked around and you were in rafe’s bedroom but he was no where to be seen. your head started to fill with worry.

did he think last night was a mistake?

should i just leave?

does he hate you now that it’s the morning?

you looked for your phone and saw it had been plugged in. you removed it from the charger and started scrolling through your messges. most were from john b apologizing but you knew that he wasn’t yours anymore and you weren’t his. the others were jj asking if you were okay and if you needed anything, kie saying that she heard what happened and if you wanted to go out and just hang out with her she’d be up for it, and pope just telling you how sorry he is. you heard the door swing open and saw rafe standing there with a tray of food on it. his hair was more messy and he was still shirtless.

“hey sleeping head nice boobs” you remembered you took of john b’s sweater last night and didn’t put on anything else. “i can give you one of mine if you want”

“rafe what is that?” you pointed to the tray. “well i made you breakfast because i figured you’d be hungry. i kinda didn’t know what you’d like so i just make pancakes and waffles. if you don’t like waffles you can have the pancake and i’ll eat the waffles and vise versa”

“what if i don’t like either” his face fell a little. “hey hey i’m joking i love both.” he smiled again and placed the tray on your lap. he kissed your cheek and then sat down. you went for the pancakes and started to eat. “you actually made these yourself?”

“don’t act so surprised princess. i have many talents.”

“i know but these are amazing. like please make this for me every morning” you moaned after putting another bite into your mouth.

he laughed. “i will whenever you come stay here”

after breakfast you and rafe cleaned up the window-deck. “hey if it’s not too much to ask can you bring me home so i can get all of john b’s shit and then can we bring it to his house? we don’t have to if you don’t-“

you turned around to see his jaw clenched slightly. but still he said “of course y/n whatever you need”

“can i get ready here? i don’t think i can walk out with just a bra on”

“but i like your bra it’s pretty” he joked.

he ended up lending you a pair of grey sweatpants and a sweater since it was a fairly cool day on the island. you sent him to get your backpack from your boat which has some new underwear and a new bra. you stepped into his shower and felt the warm water hit your back, a feeling you haven’t felt for weeks. you washed your hair and your body with surprisingly good products. after you stepped out of the bathroom and into his room again.

you cleared your throat and he looked up from the floor and at you. “were you waiting for me?”

“maybe i was”

“wow rafe were you hoping you could see something?” you joked.

“no ma’am i just wanted to take a nice shower” he walked up to you and placed his hand on your cheek. you leaned into him and connected yourselves at the lips.

“you better get going then” you laughed. as he walked into the bathroom you started to put on his clothes. the pants were a little too long but you luckily had a pair of jean shorts in your backpack. you slipped those on and slipped on the hoodie. it had some fancy private school name on the front and on the upper sleeve it had the writting ‘r. cameron’. after getting ready you laid on the bed scrolling through your phone, waiting for rafe the get out of the shower.

“hey what happened to the sweatpants?” you heard from behind you

“i’m too short for them and i found shorts in my bag” you saw that he was wearing underwear but nothing else.

“well if you’re not gonna wear them i am.” he slipped on the soft pants and started looking for a shirt.

“i have never see you in anything casual i think”

“there’s a first for everything princess” he found a plain white shirt and slipped it on. “i just need to do my hair a we can go”

“wait do you have to?”

“have to do my hair?” he was a bit puzzled.

“yeah. i like when it’s kinda got that messy look”

the messy look + the grey sweatpants + the white shirt were a triple threat. he looked way too good.

“okay then let’s head out then princess” you grabbed your phone and your bag and started to walk out the room. before your foot actually stepped into the hallway, you turned around and stepped on your tippy toes. rafe leaned down to kiss you.

“thank you so much rafe” you put your arms around him.

“of course y/n”

you went into rafes car and told him how to get to your house. as you arrived there you told him to wait in the car because you wouldn’t take too long. after 10 minutes of waiting you came back with a box full of john b’s things in them. he looked at the box and then back at you.

“hey don’t be upset princess” he said gesturing to the look on your face.

“i’m okay rafe i’m just still hurt”

“i know it’s okay” he placed his hand on your thigh as he started to pull out of your driveway.

you drive all the way to the chateau to see that everyone was there, including sarah. they all had worried looks on their face. sarah was the first to notice her brothers car with the tinted windows. she walked off the porch and up to the car and started knocking on the windows. rafe opened the door and got out of the car without anyone seeing you.

everything was muffled but you could hear everything.

“rafe what the fuck are you doing here?” that one was sarah.

“you fucking psycho get off of the cut” kie said that one.

“are you hear to start any problems buddy because remember i have my little friend to keep you in check.” of course jj would threaten him.

pope stayed quiet afraid to provoke the boy.

and john b just walked up to rafe and told him two simple words “fuck off”.

you knew it was because of you that he was so calm and he didn’t fight back. if what happened last night didn’t happen, rafe would’ve already swung at one of the boys.

before it did escalate though you stepped out of the car. all heads turned to you as you slammed the door shut. you placed the box of john b’s stuff in his hands and didn’t say anything else, you were afraid you were gonna cry.

“y/n? why are you with rafe cameron?” john b sounded hurt when he asked that. he pointed to the sweatshirt sleeve.

rafe answered for you. “maybe because her piece of shit boyfriend cheated on her. and if you wanna know, no we didn’t sleep together. i just let her cry to me because she was upset”

you knew that hurt john b more. knowing that you were so broken over him that you cried to someone else.

“listen here buddy fuck you, y/n is our friend and you stay away from here. you don’t know anything about me and her so you can just fuck off before there’s a problem buddy.”

“there’s not gonna be any problem john b.” you finally spoke up. “i he just brought me here to give you your shit and leave. so goodbye” you turned around and got back into the car and rafe did the sam. all the others stayed in the same place starring at the car while you pulled out of the property. you could see his knuckles turning white from his hard he was gripping the steering wheel.

“rafe i’m sorry i didn’t mean for you to get upset” he glanced at you and loosened his grip on the wheel.

“hey hey it’s okay it’s not your fault. they just started provoking me, which technically makes sense because i do some fucked up shit to them..”

“rafe why are you doing this?” it was the same question as last night but you needed a different answer.

“doing what”

“driving me around. being nice to me. like i thought you hated me and now you made me breakfast this morning and let me cry in your arms. like i know it’s because i was sad but i’m not sad anymore”

“do you not get it princess?” he laughed lightheartly. “you know ever since i first saw you i thought you were the prettiest girl to ever step foot on this island, fuck even in all of the country. no one has ever looked as beautiful as you had. i didn’t even care about the kooks or pogue shit because you were like an angel sent from heaven. and then i find out that the son of a bitch john b got to you before i did. i may be a bad person but i knew i couldn’t just steal you from john b. you were meant to be mine than i knew we’d cross paths like this.”

“rafe we aren’t even close enough to know each other like that. we’ve never talked”

“we’re close enough for me to know that you’re beautiful and that you don’t deserve what john b did to you.”

“rafe i think i really like you but i just-“ the car pulled into his property and he put it in park.

“what do you need princess? time? i can wait for you.”

“i just need- i just need to be cared for”

he leaned over the console and placed a kiss on your temple. “that i can do for you”

If this is what love is like, then I want it

And then people ask me why I have such high expectations

Yacht Date (r.c)

Requested: Yes, thanks for opening my thoughts to this idea. Thinking about Rafe planning a date like this is so cute, oops.

Summary: People don’t expect Rafe to be the type of boyfriend to plan cute dates, but when it comes to you, he’ll do anything he can to show you how much you mean to him.

Warnings: None, other than the fact that you might need some milk after reading because of how sickly sweet this is.

————————

If you asked anyone what type of boyfriend they thought that Rafe would be, they definitely wouldn’t have guessed that he was a hopeless romantic. He enjoys planning dates, no matter how much it “dampens” his reputation. So when he texted you in the middle of the day, you weren’t all at surprised.

Hey, just so you know, you have dinner plans with me tonight. ~R

Your lips curled into a goofy smile, your eyes rolling at the slight boldness of the text. You shake your head and call him, figuring that you’ll get more information out of him that way.

“Dinner plans, huh? And what would you do if I told you that I already have dinner plans?,” you responded as soon as you heard the call tone cut off.

“You don’t. I already told your mom that I’m stealing you for the night,” he explains matter of factly, the smile he wore on his face evident in the tone of his voice.

“Oh really? Getting my mother involved is a pretty serious offense Rafe,” you joke, standing up from the lawn chair you were seated in, casually strolling along the neatly painted deck beneath your feet. “These must be pretty great plans if you went to her directly.”

“I mean, I don’t want to give myself too much credit but,” he sighed dramatically, earning a chuckle from you. Rafe loves getting praise for the things he does. “It’s going to be a good night.”

“Well, why don’t you tell me what we’re doing and let me be the judge of that,” you hummed persuasively, raising your eyebrows hopefully as you waited for his response.

“Meet me at my house at seven,” he commanded cheekily before the line cut off.

“Rafe,” you stated, planning on pushing him for more information but he was already gone. You rolled you eyes again, an excited smile on your face as you shook your head at your boyfriends antics.

“Who was that, hun,” your mom asked, stepping into the porch with a glass of wine tucked between her fingers.

“Rafe,” you smiled, walking closer to her with a sickly-sweet smile on your face. “Do you know what he has planned?”

“No, I don’t,” she admitted nonchalantly, planting herself in the lawn chair that you had previously been seated on. “And if I did, I wouldn’t tell you.”

“Mom,” you groaned humorously, dramatically falling into the chair next to her.

“What? The boy puts so much effort into making sure you’re happy. I wouldn’t dare to be the one to ruin a surprise,” she explained, sipping at her wine casually. You rolled your eyes playfully, laying back in the chair. You fell into a comfortable silence; you mind wandering to the possible scenarios of what your night might look like.

————————

As planned, you pull up to the Cameron residence at 7 o’clock on the dot. He was vague on what you guys were doing so you opted for wearing a cute, but casual outfit that you know he likes. You shut your car off and walked towards the house, only to bump into him as he was walking out.

“Hey,” a wide smile etched on his face as he pulls you into his chest. He presses a quick peck against your lips before dragging you towards the backyard.

“Rafe, what on earth,” you state, laughing at his excitement. “Where are we going?” Your eyes search the yard for any clues as to what was going on but nothing looked too out of the ordinary as he led you onto the dock.

He abruptly stops in his tracks, laughing as you smack against his back in surprise.

“Rafe, what are we doing out here?” You ask, scribing your nose in confusion. He places his finger against your lips, shushing you as his free hand dig into his pocket. A proud smirk forms on his face as he pulls out a key, only furthering your confusion.

“I stole the keys from my dad’s study,” he explains, clearly proud of his accomplishment. “We’re having dinner on the water, baby.” You inwardly coo at his excitement, watching as he steps on the boat before reaching out his hand to help you climb on after him.

“Does your father know about this,” you ask, hesitantly taking his hand to allow him to pull you on after him.

“He has a business trip in Nassau with Rose for the weekend,” he replies nonchalantly. “They left this morning.”

“Rafe,” you warn, knowing full well the amount of trouble he’ll get into if Ward finds out.

“Relax, Y/n. He won’t find out. They’re going to be gone for days and I paid Wheezie to keep quiet,” he promises, staring into your eyes deeply. “It’s going to be fun.” Part of you wants to protest, but you immediately crumble at the look in his eyes.

“Alright,” you submit, smiling as he pulls you in for a celebratory kiss.

“Okay so,” he pauses, turning around to look for something before facing you with a bouquet consisting of an assortment of all of your favorite flowers. You quietly gasp at the sight of them, surprised that he remembered. “Those are for you. I also brought you a blanket and your favorite sweatshirt because you always get so cold.” You wordlessly follow after him as he leads you to the top of the boat where the wheel is. He gestures for you to sit before putting the key in the ignition and excusing himself to make sure everything is set so that he can take off.

He returns a few minutes later, a focused expression adorning his face before being replaced by a content smile at the sight of you. He takes his spot at the wheel, pushing a few switches before turning the boat on and driving it towards the open sea.

Somewhere in the time spent getting to wherever he was driving, you’d gotten up to stand next to him, carrying on in casual conversation as you studied the world around you.

As you’re talking to him, sharing about how much you’ve always loved the idea of being on the open water, he gently pulls you in front of him before retuning his hands back to their original position on the wheel; placing a chaste kiss to your cheek before leaning his chin against your shoulder. You wordlessly lean against his chest; feeling at ease as you take in the scenery.

“This should be good,” he mumbles to himself, one hand cupping your waist as he leans around you to make sure everything is in place to shut the boat off. “Let’s go eat,” he smiles, tangling his fingers with yours to lead you into the living area on the boat. Before you enter, he steps behind you again, now covering your eyes.

“What are you-,”

“Just trust me,” he shushes you, carefully guiding you forward. You walk a little further, Rafe giggling at you clumsily tripping over your feet, before he stops. You open your mouth to say something just as his hands fall from your eyes, revealing the dining area.

“This is so cute,” you gasp, taking in the room. A small trail of rose petals lead to the table, set for two, a bottle of champagne resting in a bucket on the neat table cloth. A few strings of lights hang across the ceiling offering soft lighting in the dark room. You spin around to face him, pressing a passionate kiss against his lips, as your heart flutters in your chest. It’s such a simple setting, but it’s perfect. When you pull away, Rafe gestures to the table, pulling your chair out for you so that you could sit.

“One second,” he tells you, and you watch as he exits the room briefly, walking back with a basket. “I was going to try to cook for you, but I thought you’d enjoy this a little bit more.” You watch curiously as he pulls out a few containers, your eyes furrowing when you realize that he’d ordered food from your favorite italian restuarant. He sets your plates sliding yours in front of you before finally taking his own seat.

“Rafe, you did not have to do all of this,” you murmur, slightly shell shocked by the sweet gestures.

“I know,” he shrugs, a proud smile adorning his face. “I just thought we deserved a nice night by ourselves.”

“Well, I love it,” you admit, smiling at him endearingly. The proud smile on his face only grows at your statement as he reaches to pop open the bottle of champagne, pouring a glass for each of you.

“Here’s to a nice night with my favorite girl,” he raises his glass, winking as you clink your glass against his.

————————

You spend the rest of dinner talking about anything that your mind wanders too. You heart clenches when Rafe’s hand mindlessly takes yours across the table while his eyes gleam with excitement as he talks about the future.

Your cheeks hurt from the amount of time you’ve spent smiling, feeling so content with being away from the distractions on the island.

After you finish dinner, you make your way out into the bow of the boat, curling up on a blanket beneath the stars.

“Thank you for all of this. I really don’t knkw what I did to deserve this kind of treatment,” you murmur, looking up at him after a few moments of silence. “But it’s been nice to get away from all of the noise.” He nods, shifting so that you were both laying on your sides facing each other.

“I’d do anything for you,” he responds, pushing your hair away from your face so that he could look into your eyes. “I love you.” Your hesrt dwells again as you lean in to break the space between the both of you.

————————

You laid out there for hours, just enjoying each other’s company. Sometimes you got caught in conversation and other times you just basked in the sounds of the night around you.

Rafe was in the middle of a story when he looks at you and realized that you’d fallen asleep curled against his chest. He carefully moved out from underneath you so that he could carry you to bed.

He effortlessly hooked his arms under your legs to carry you, bridal style, to the back room so that you could sleep comfortably on the bed. With that, he climbed in bed next to you, curling against your sleeping frame.

————————

A/n: This was supposed to be a headcanon but then I got lost.

I hope you enjoy reading this as much as I enjoyed writing it.

Thinking about Rafe going over and beyond to show you how much he loves you is kind of everything honestly.

This is so cute omg🥺❤️
