More Theobel fic/au ideas because the new episode was a whole three course meal:

  • Theo and Mabel CoBro date: Mabel never got into CoBro and Theo just has to fix that. But is it an explicit date or not? And will they even really be paying attention to the movies?
  • Teenage years where Theo catches the Hardy Boys sneaking into the Dimas apartment but nobody has the time to say anything because Mabel finds a CoBro dvd and oh my god is Theo a Ben Glenroy fan? has Theo seen Girl Cop? oh he hasn't? and then she drags him out of his apartment leaving her friends utterly confused while she leads him to her aunt's place to sit him down and force feed him the pilot episode. Let's just say Theo becomes a little smitten by that.
  • Roomies AU: Mabel needs to get out of her aunt's apartment. Theo needs someone to help him pay rent. Or maybe he doesn't and would like to have a roomate. Or at least extend some kindness after everything that's happened. Mabel accepts. It gets super domestic real quick.
  • The road to 3.07: How did Mabel and Theo get from that day on Coney Island to where they are now? I want awkward meet ups, talking their complicated feelings out, a crap ton of miscommunication of the linguistic and the emotional sort, finding common ground in being directionless and finding comfort in being directionless together.
  • Renovation AU: They've never met before. Theo is moving out of his father's grasp into his own place and has the money to renovate. He sees one of Mabel's murals on social media and decides to commission her with no idea what he even wants a mural of. Queue a bunch of meetings where they end up talking about their lives and interests instead of the job, and Mabel spending hours at his place, dragging out the process just to spend more time with him.
  • Ghost AU: Every death at the Arconia results in a new ghostly tennant. Mabel is the only one who can see them until the night of Zoe’s death. Theo starts with only her but gradually ends up seeing all the ghosts. Inevitably him and Mabel discover each other and the dead residents decide to place their bets on the match.
  • Fan meet: Mabel wants to meet Ben Glenroy and share her gratitude for Girl Cop. Theo wants his CoBro 2 copy signed. They bump into each other at a meet and greet line and leave the line to catch up. They never do meet Ben that day.
  • Mabel loses sleep over a case on her conspiracy board and invites Theo over for help. They end up talking about grief and guilt instead. It goes on for so long they both fall asleep on the couch and wouldn’t you know they wake up in a bundle of sweatered arms and legs.

I just had the thought...what if Theo asks Mabel to move into 6B so that she can stay in the Arconia and he can have some company/a designated emergency contact while Teddy is in prison? (Assuming I haven't overlooked/forgotten a canon confirmation that the Dimases have permanently moved out, or if they have, if that Theo can't simply sign a new lease for it . Or even move into Sting/Amy Schumer/Ben's old place. Just accept it for the sake of the bit).

Theo and Mabel being roommates (oh my god, they'd be roommates). They'd have their own rooms in the apartment and would respect each other's space, but would undoubtedly spend even more casual time together than they're implied to already do.

It would all start out very platonic, of course. Share a takeout meal once or twice a week (and when the takeout is from Dimas wraps, they'll send the leftover dips to Oliver). Watch a movie together (with closed captioning of course) on Friday nights. Go off into their respective bedrooms and try not think too much about all the times their hands accidentally brushed when they reached for popcorn at the same time.

But how long could they realistically have expected it to stay platonic? When Theo is constantly, intensely watching Mabel's pretty mouth so he can read her lips? When Mabel is equally focused on the rapid movement of Theo's hands as he teaches her new ASL words and allowing her mind to wander in imagination of what exactly those powerful-yet-fluid hands might be capable of in other contexts?

Someday, there will be a terrible wonderful misunderstanding due to the language barrier between them. He'll misread her lips in some crucial way or she'll accidentally say something extremely suggestive in ASL. And then suddenly their lips are meeting and their hands are all over each other. They are communicating, connected in an entirely new way and it's perfect.

And then...flash-forward a couple years, Mabel in wedding dress photos.

HellCheer/OneCheer Dark Suspense AU

1989

Eddie rents a house just outside of Chicago with his bandmates, working long day shifts at the garage and playing gigs at night, waiting for their big break.

The house next door to them is vacant until one day a couple moves in, an orderly named Peter Ballard and his much younger wife Christina. They’re quiet and keep to themselves, but there’s something weird about them, something just off. Everyone in the neighborhood can feel it. Ballard leaves from time to time for work, but his wife hardly ever seems to go anywhere.

Eddie’s completely besotted with the beautiful and melancholy young woman. She’s like something from a dream, a fairytale. He’s only ever caught glimpses of her sitting with her cat on the front porch, or working in the small garden behind her house. He and the boys try to befriend her, since she seems to always be by herself, but she always hurries away at their every attempt, locking herself inside. Sometimes though, Eddie can see her from his window at night and he thinks that sometimes she can see him too. He’ll play music for her on his window sill those rare moments she’s outside and leave her cool rocks and trinkets he finds for her garden. Once in a while he’ll even see her smile at the small offerings.

But as the months pass it grows increasingly clear that there’s something strange about the Ballards… something wrong.

Hades and Persephone AU

Snippet:

Where is she?

Aidoneus acknowledged him quietly. The boy wasn’t a threat on his own, but his rage was something to be considered. He could see into his heart and there was only hate, and perhaps worse than that…pride.

“You have no power here to be making demands, son of Olympus.” A mocking smile teased at his lips as he leaned back comfortably in his throne, scratching Cerberus’ head. The creature sat obediently beside his armrest, growling lowly at the intruder, just for the command. “The sun doesn’t shine in this realm.”

With an aggravated snarl, the young god drew his blade and took a step forward, unafraid, striking against the pillar and drawing a brief charge of lightning. “Don’t patronize me! You’ll pay for your crime!”

“My… crime?” he repeated slowly, quietly. Perhaps his adversary thought this was a parody toward of the gravity of the situation, but it was truly to keep his own anger in check.

Fire burned behind the pale blue sky of his eyes and the sun god shook as he thrust his sword across the throne room. “You stole her from us! You defiled her! You took her away from her home.”

“Careful how you speak of my queen,” he warned, dark eyes glinting. “She was promised to me before Kronos’ fall and to that we’re both still bound.”

“A farce of a betrothal won by a coward!” he bellowed in disgust. “Even you know it to be true.”

“…I didn’t hold her to it.” Aidoneus finally replied through his teeth, unable to fully hide the sharp sting of his words. “She remained on the surface…”

“Where she belongs!” Apollo yelled, voice breaking. “She belongs with her mother, she belongs with me! Not here, not with you.”

Background art for Cinderella (1950) from the Walt Disney Animation Research Library

“Cinderella’s background paintings remind me of grand stage sets for a Viennese Operetta by Johann Strauss. Everything is exaggerated in order to enhance a dreamlike, sentimental mood. The movie was made on a shoestring budget, yet its visual presentation is opulent and luscious. You combine that with rich storytelling, and you get a classic for the ages.” - Andreas Deja
