archaea are SUPER FUCKING COOL. yes, they’re prokaryotic. HOWEVER they actually possess genes and metabolic pathways more closely related to eukaryotes. they also have some of THE most diverse energy sources, from sugars to ammonia to metal ions to even HYDROGEN GAS. cool as fuck. hell, we even know of the class Haloarchaea which uses sunlight as an energy source!!!

they’re ALSO well-known to have most of the known extremophiles. some live in hot springs, some in extremely salty lakes, some can survive ionizing & uv radiation. hell, the most acid-resistant species we know of (Picrophilus) IS part of the archaea domain! this isn’t even mentioning the importance of archaea in the human gut microbiome.

and also as another bonus, we don’t know of archaea that cause disease/are parasitic. they’re often mutualists/commensals, such as the methanogens that inhabit human & ruminant gastrointestinal tracts.

there’s archaea in that spring. those archaea produce the bright coloring.
