I gotta talk about Jin (Mei's dad) for a second because I freaking adore him

He's such an understated character compared to the others in the supporting cast, but he's such an important supporting character. His soft, quiet approach to things comes in direct contrast to how other characters react to stressful situations. When Mei's worried about the ritual, he's there to gently encourage her to choose the path she wants, and that maybe getting rid of the Panda isn't something she has to do if she doesn't want to.

When the ritual fails and Mei runs off, he's the only person who notices that Ming is Not OK and he tries to offer her encouragement. While the rest of her family is freaking out - mostly at her - he's the only one trying to reassure her. He's the only one who notices her tears. He's the only one who realizes she's literally about to explode and he tries to help her.

And then this man, this sweet adorably awkward man, somehow managed to locate and presumably break into the equipment room at the freaking SkyDome to get the line chalker for the baseball field and started painting a giant - and also near perfect - circle around a furious godzilla-sized red panda before even Mei's Grandma could tell him to. Like she turned to get his help and the guy is already running with the line chalker and has 2/3s of the circle done.

Bless Jin. He's an incredible dad and husband (also one badass cook)

Did Turning Red “need” to be set in the early 2000s? Maybe not. But god they committed so hard that it added so much vibrance to the world and to the story. The boy band pastiche. The character designs–the skirts worn over leggings with sneakers, the butterfly clips, the ugg boots. The virtual pets. The Beyoncé. The camcorder. The Late Nineties Anime Vibes of the whole thing. Something about the colour palette of everything. That creative team committed to a Vision and they pulled it off with immense power
