I keep wanting to do HELLAWEEN AMAs, but I know most of the answers are probably just "book 2" lol
ALL HAIL PRINCE VINCENT—
For today we celebrate his fifth journey around the sun.
So who's your favorite Soul Eater character? And if you were in the universe, what would your trait/weapon be?
Death the Kid easily. Simultaneously the the sickest character on the show but also he sucks so. much. I default to rapiers and daggers when I play dnd, so probably one of those. Or maybe a big ol baseball bat for clobbering.
I might of asked this question awhile back on insta but what are some visual inspirations for each character in the Hellaween trio?? Like were there any characters you had in mind while designing them?? I just absolutely love how simplistic and charming you managed to make each of them, its all I ever wanted for my art, so it would be nice to see the inspiration of what inspires me haha (Can't wait for book 2 btw!)
None of them were inspired by specific existing characters, they're all cherry picked from stylistic influences, friends, fashion trends, music and culture I'm fond of. I was a teenager in the 2000's so mall goth/emo, california skate and ska is something I pulled a lot from. "What if MCR did the soundtrack to Scooby Doo?" and "What if there was a Tony Hawk's Pro Skater level set in a Spirit Halloween store?" are two questions I've posed a lot to describe the characters and world of Hellaween.
For art style I've pulled a lot from Invader ZIM, FLCL, Soul Eater, Jamie Hewlett, The Muppets, plus online artists I've looked up to for years.
just curious, what's your process for drawing poses? you draw very expressively!
stay loose, draw fast, draw a lot Instead of just drawing them to draw them, put your character in situations. Consider what they're thinking, or what they're doing. For example in my last few Monster High x HELLAWEEN sketches, they're on a white background because who can be bothered to draw bgs all the time? but I thought about how the characters would play off each other and found ways to have them contrast the other. Easier to push a pose when one character has something or someone to act with.

This is my first custom Monster High doll, and I learned a lot of cool new art techniques in the process. I think making my own little guy irl has fixed me. Get my comic HELLAWEEN wherever books are sold Pre-order HELLAWEEN: Spellbent out Aug 20 Progress pics under the cut!
hey, i’m just here to say that I adore your art and i adore Hellaween. I’m so glad that I chose to pick up the novel when I saw it in walmart!
my friend and i have a silly little world that we’ve been developing with our ocs, and we want to turn it into *something.* we keep thinking a comic sounds awesome. do you have any tips or resources for learning how to make a comic? thank you in advance and sorry if you’ve been asked this before!
can’t wait for book 2 btw!
THANK YOU! I'm so psyched for people to get book 2 in their hands.
Making comics is always the cool choice to make. My big piece of advice if you've never drawn a comic is to start small. Some 1-5 pagers to get the feel for making comics and work your way up to maybe a 30-50 page comic. Starting on a smaller scale helped me feel more comfortable with the medium, test out my writing chops, figure out character dynamics and things like that. So when my books were signed I had done some small scale work (plus my then 6+ years of storyboarding) I felt more than confident enough to tackle a 200 page graphic novel. Other than that referencing is always good. My comics take a lot of inspo from my work as a storyboard artist. Like my paneling is very straightforward but my compositions are very film-y. Pick up your favorite comics again and think about why you like it so much, art style, paneling, page layouts, pacing, color/tone/BW etc
