Jin is ready to pass on the topic, but he’ll find that difficult to do when Eira’s expression looks like that. Slack jawed would be taking it a tad dramatic, but the parted lips and wide eyes do speak of a familiar picture in that sore vein. She’s never sure what to expect, though usually it’s an attempt to have things entirely unaddressed. A victory turns into something far more… unfortunate. It explains why the topic is a difficult one for the man. Eira watches for another moment.
“We’ll get to that. This is… Jin, you realize I can’t just ignore this, right? Years. I don’t see my brothers and family too often but, Gods, I see them at least at the major holidays during the year if I can. I send them messages. They’ll send some in return. Years…” A finger pinches at her brow, though expression remains a large contrast to the usual frustration. Apologetic isn’t a familiar look for her. “And you haven’t tried anything since then?”
It's not likely. And really, with Major Kisaragi, hardly a surprise. He’s a passive sort who sequesters himself to solitude outside of work hours.
“That... sounds lonely. I can't even imagine.” This is where the movie moment would be to invite him along to her own family’s festivities. But that was in no way happening. Instead, she bolsters the moment with a request- the least she could do was try to guide him in the proper direction. “We should change that this year. For the season. You should send out a simple card to them, the ones that… haven’t actively tried to kill you at least. Don’t even write a long note, just send something their way.” Eira nods.
“Anything to show them that you’re thinking about them. You should know even gestures as minor as that can have a profound effect. This isn’t a way to just keep going about- even if it isn’t blood they are family. You never know if you might need them someday…”
"Major?
The man questions, raising his brow. Eira's response was unexpected to say the least. Surely, his own family drama was of little importance to her. So why did she look so upset with his response? Where were her usual biting comments and combative attitude? Regardless, he knew the Kisaragi family far better than she did. A simple explanation of just how terrible this family could truly be should have been more than enough to put this conversation to rest, no?
"I don't see a point in wasting my time on something like that. You have to understand that my siblings are-"
Jin trails off, averting his gaze. Damn it! Why did she have to look at him like that? It was much easier whenever she was angry or annoyed with him, but the Hero of Ikaruga was woefully unprepared for her pity. Of all the times to feel guilty, why now..?
He sighs, shaking his head and slumping his shoulders in defeat. This certainly wasn't where he was expecting this conversation to lead. Jin could only hope that the Silver Phoenix knew what she was talking about...
"...Fine. I suppose that I could try to at least contact some of them. Just...stop looking at me like that. It's unnerving..."
He pulls out his phone tapping through it with a hum, before turning his attention back on the woman. He'd better not regret this...
"I can start with one of my sisters. She tries to call me every now and then, but...I've left her largely ignored, I admit..."
Bear is a bastard.

What the fuck is my luck
This man has barely changed in appearance since he was ten years old.
MUR CHRISTMAS
This man's sister was such a bad cook that he swore meat off forever.
"This season is always so exhausting. I feel like I need a break..."
@dcviated asked: "So, when was the last time you tried to talk with any of them?" Eira's voice is curious, but theres an unmistakable tinge of concern as well, brows softening. "Letters? Emails? Anything?"
Just how did they get on this subject? The last time Jin checked, they were talking about Eira's family, not his. Besides, it wasn't as though the Kisaragi family's lack of closeness was some kind of secret. What more was there to discuss?
"What does it matter? I-."
The man stops mid-sentence. He'd known Eira long enough to understand that she wasn't going to just let this go without some kind of answer. With some reluctance, he explains.
"I...spoke with two of my sisters before I was deployed in the Ikaruga Civil War. One of them wished me luck, but the other...Well, she was hoping that I wouldn't return at all. Not counting the odd attempt on my life, that's the last I've dealt with any of them."
Admittedly, even Jin was somewhat saddened by this. What point was there in building up such a large and powerful family if you're only going to pit them against one another? Such a waste...
"Well...I think that's enough about that. You said that you're planning on seeing your family for Christmas?"
Even if he hadn't intended it to be humorous, Jin's assessment garnered a laugh from Sonia. It wasn't right to be so cynical of it, but the 'exciting time in your life' was often anything but for a member of the Novosonian aristocracy. They had a show to put on, one that advertised happily ever afters to their nation and the world, to keep people still believing in real life fairy tales and, hopefully, bring in tourism money seeking just that for themselves. For those involved? It was an endless parade of soirees and parties, galas and dinners, with little time for the couple themselves unless a camera was in their face to record it all.
"Sorry, it's just that from what I've seen, 'exciting' isn't the most fitting word I'd use," She explained, "At least where marriages in my family's social circles are concerned. Everyone always seems so tired and frustrated by the time the wedding finally occurs, and hardly ever terribly happy. It doesn't seem right: uncomplicated may be for the best."
Not that the same could be said for either of them. Even if he was inviting her to stay at his home in the midst of a work crisis, Sonia regarded the man as someone rather complicated himself, or at least guarded. But regardless, he still seemed interested in her life, or he wanted to simply make polite conversation. Either way, Sonia grinned: she'd indulge him, even though he might regret the inquiry.
"Well, here's something my family would never allow for the press to publish," She offered as they walked. The houses they passed became larger, more meticulously maintained, and far more expensive. The difference between Tokyo and Novoselic was how modern the more opulent homes were: unless someone was a fan of traditional European design, everything seemed to lean more towards a modern look. "One of the best meals I think someone can buy is at a convenience store here in Japan. Whether it's an egg salad sandwich or the karaage chicken from FamilyMart, there's something so satisfying about konbini offerings. Not even a celebrated chef focused on personalized, molecular gastronomy can improve upon karaage chicken, or a fruit sando, or even the prepackaged ice cream cones from a konbini. What do you think about convenient food here, Kisaragi-san? Do you have a favorite or do you not enjoy them?"
But one of the more extravagant houses happened to be his, and Sonia followed him up the driveway and to the front door. And while the interior didn't faze her in the least, the friendly cat certainly did. She gasped in delight, her attention now focused on Jin's pet with great interest.
"Oh, how very adorable indeed!" She cooed, unable to wipe the smile off her face as she watched cat and owner/human interact. "Would you introduce me, Kisaragi-san? Your kitty is cute! How may I best assist in looking after your pet whilst I am here, in your absence? I'd like to help if I may!"
"Perhaps I should be surprised that someone of your status enjoys such meals. With what little I've learned of you, however…"
He trails off, stopping himself from speaking his thoughts further. It was better to hold his tongue than to unintentionally insult her with a blunt observation…
"Regardless, I don't find myself eating food from a convenience store very often. The food is usually far too high in calories, filled to the brim with meat or both. It doesn't suit my diet, simply put."
Would it come as a shock to the Princess that a man like Jin had such a strict and unadventurous diet? Considering his usual demeanor, likely not. After all, the detective wasn't one to portray himself in an especially exciting manner.
"That said, there is a convenience store down the street that I visit from time to time. For how cheap it is, their egg salad isn't half bad. I'll give it that, at the very least."
The man's gaze turns back to Sonia, his hand reaching under the tabby's chin and giving it a good scratch as he drops to a knee. While this may have looked out of character for Jin, it wasn't an uncommon sight in the Kisaragi household by any means. After a moment, however, Luka notices their guest and rolls over after giving her a sniff, clearly vying for attention!
"This is Luka. It can be difficult to work whenever he gets energetic, so you being here to hold his attention could work in my favor. Just keep him busy while I look over my notes. His toys are in the hall closet, if you need them."
I'll use this account again proper...one day
