Internet Safety

Being hyper-secretive online is probably the only good kneejerk reaction boomers have put into our heads twenty years ago and now both them and the next generation look at you like you're a freak if you don't list your social security number in your carrd.

Without looking it up, when you first hear "Tornado Warning", what does that mean to you?

I have met. so many people in real life who do not know what "Tornado Watch" means, who do not know what "Tornado Warning" means.

literally 9 out of 10 (aka 90%) of people I meet think that "Tornado Watch" is the more dangerous alert, and think "Tornado Warning" is less severe.

Most people I meet who hear 'Tornado Warning' think it's a good idea to go outside and look at the cool clouds.

FEMA or whoever needs to officially change these stupid-ass names, or do one HELL of a public awareness campaign, because this can and will get people killed; there's already been multiple deadly tornadoes just this week.

[ID: Caption from article: A powerful tornado near Waverly Road in the Lincoln, Nebraska, metro area on April 26, 2024. It shows a vast flat field with a massive tornado in the distance, funneling down from storm clouds in the foreground, while a bright and blue sky is visible behind the destructive storm, with houses in the distance. end ID]

Tornado Watch: Watch out, and be cautious! -- Keep an ear out for alerts, and make sure you know where you need to take shelter! A tornado could possibly form in this storm, and you need to be ready.

  • Tornado Watch is a good time to secure your pets in your safe area (in carriers/crates), grab important documents/belongings, make sure your valuable electronics are unplugged, etc.
  • .
  • Make sure you have flashlights (Ideally, that are not just your cellphone) with working batteries. If you have an emergency radio, keep it turned on and tuned to a local radio station. Bring bottled water and non-perishable food to your safe area.
  • .
  • If you have a basement, make sure there is a clear area for you to shelter in, and that everyone can get down the stairs/ladder safely.
  • .
  • If you do not have a basement, go to the lowest floor of your home, in a room away from as many windows as possible; if this room is your bathroom, take down the shower curtain rod (so it can't fall on you), and take down any other loose objects that could fall.
  • .
  • Bring some spare blankets and pillows into your safe area, both for comfort and extra protection.
  • .
  • Make sure your family knows that if a warning is sounded, or if signs of a tornado are seen or heard outside your home, that they need to go to the safe area immediately.
  • .
  • Make sure in advance that your family is wearing appropriate shoes + clothing in case of emergency, and that everyone has their phones charged and on hand.

Tornado Warning = Warning! A Tornado is currently forming or is already formed! -- Take shelter immediately on the lowest floor of your home away from windows!

  • Drop what you're doing and get to your safe area. You no longer have time for preparation-- your only focus now is getting to your safe area!
  • .
  • Alert family members, if they're not in the safe area already.
  • .
  • Once you are all in your safe area, close the door, have everyone huddle together as low to the ground as you can get, and wrap everyone up in your spare blankets, putting pillows over your heads, etc.
  • .
  • Try to keep everyone calm, if at all possible.

I literally have this image printed out on my bulletin board at work (my staff and I do a lot of work outdoors) :

[ID: a tweet by Normal Fire Department (Normal, IL) From May 3rd (unknown year) that reads "since We are under a severe thunderstorm watch this evening, It's a good time to go over the difference between a watch and a warning.
Watch: 🟧 [orange square emoji] : we have the ingredients to make tacos
Warning: 🟥[red square emoji] We are having tacos. Right now. "
Underneath the text is two images, one labled "taco watch" that has tortilla shells, ground meat, lettuce, tomato, cheese, a jalapeno avocado and salsa sitting on a counter, showing taco ingredients.
The other image is labled "taco warning" and shows a fully assembled taco . End ID]

Okay, this graphic is genuinely genius because it is so funny, more people need to see this lol.

IE "hoo golly we sure found a shitload of scary data"

if there had been any way to frame the report advantageously we'd've had its bullet points screamed in our collective face for two weeks before official release

Avatar
time-being

They released it on Friday afternoon. It's all like "Israel definitely did a bunch of war crimes with US weapons, but Anthony Blinken didn't personally witness it so they don't don't count and the real war crimes were the friends we made along the way and who can know? No change in policy."

Avatar

"The finding of “reasonable” evidence to conclude that the U.S. ally had breached international law protecting civilians in the way it conducted its war against Hamas was the strongest statement that the Biden administration has yet made on the matter. It was released in a summary of a report being delivered to Congress on Friday.

But the caveat that the administration wasn't able to link specific U.S. weapons to individual attacks by Israeli forces in Gaza could give the administration leeway in any future decision on whether to restrict provisions of offensive weapons to Israel."

Worth mentioning that multiple Palestinians have recounted these stories before, as direct victims detailing their experiences. What's unique about these accounts from CNN Israeli whistle-blower is that they're from an Israeli, therefore people are more likely to take this seriously.

This last bit is the most heartbreaking to me. There's so much unsaid between these words. I don't know how to describe this. There were videos a few months back of Palestinians saying "Wallah, we love life" (in arabic) as a way to convince people to help them survive. Imagine how they got to this point to say this.

Vetted family fundraiser masterpost 1

Version date: May 7th 2024.

This is a masterpost for the evacuation fundraisers I've vetted so far. The numbers next to the names have no significance beyond ease of navigation for me for when I check their progress in the future. You should look at the disclaimers instead and focus on those. Occasionally I will update these with new info, including new fundraisers, and the amount of cash that's been raised. Check in regularly on the original post when you see it being reblogged. In all likelihood once its reached you it's already outdated. This post is part of this masterpost series compiling fundraisers for Ghazzah and Sudan. I focus on Ghazzah as I am Palestinian and am more equipped to do verifications as I'm more familiar with my own country and its politics and dialect, but if I know a fundraiser for a Sudanese family is legit I will include it here.

Homeless LGBT Couple in need of support!!!

Hello everyone!

We are still homeless and struggling to survive lately, especially since we lost our source of income. My pneumonia and stomach issues have been a problem and I cannot be without shelter and access to a restroom because of it. It is getting harder to afford food and we just received notice that our car registration renewal is due very soon. We cannot lose access to our car as it would greatly limit our ability to reach our doctor, job interviews, and other crucial resources.

Right now, we need help covering a motel room while I recover from being sick. We also need help affording food, medicine, important bills, and toiletries. Any help getting our needs met is greatly appreciated, as is getting attention to this post.

CashApp: $garbageconnoisseur

(Please no hate and no unsolicited advice. I can't deal with it right now and you will be blocked.)

We really need support covering food and necessities on top of everything else. I'm out of pain medication, and the hunger/ nausea makes everything feel worse.

We are going to lose shelter tomorrow, and I'm broke. We have no food, we are low on supplies, important bills are piling up, and I feel my health getting worse each day. My doctor is so incredibly hard to get in touch with, and my inbox has more job application rejections than I care to count. I'm in an increasingly bad place mentally and physically, and the burnout coupled with hunger, stress, and illness is becoming too much. Someone, please help us.

We are without shelter today. We just left our room, and I already feel so much pain and nausea from the act of getting dressed this morning, and I have a long, hot day ahead of me. Please, I would greatly appreciate any help affording a new room while I'm recovering from pneumonia and stomach issues.

This is so miserable. The sun is really kicking my ass and I feel so sick right now. I'm so tired.

No shelter again. Can't stay like this. Can we please get help?

can any generous donors offer a contribution of $500 or more? i know that people with these figures are out there

be an ally and help me please

I have struggled for over a decade and I hope this chapter of my life compells you to help, please. Mutual aid pretty often isn't a case of asking the most well-off to help the less fortunate--it ends up being those of us who are often in a needy situation ourselves, sharing with each other when we have the means. So, if you find yourself in the former category, consider all those who work to allow you the privilege to have what you have, and those who will never see such figures in their lifetime, like myself. If you have it to give, in large amounts, and won't be disposed or otherwise in a deficit, please consider helping me. I am so So profoundly Tired. I want comfort and rest.

I have no one else left at this point. What have you got to lose?

Please don't ignore this

Someone threatened to kill me with a hammer earlier today.

My rent is due today. It's $500. I'm trudging through my days and struggling to stay on top of basic functionality. i have no clean clothes and don't have much food atm.

It's been almost a week since I've gotten anything and I'm frankly exhausted

i broke my fucking leg
