i held off on commenting on this matter because i was just seething in rage and shaking with anger to the point i almost broke my phone in half. buuuut since i’m in a better headspace now, i would like to take some time to discuss on this matter.
in light of some recent events and some profound information i have received from one of my longtime followers, there seems to be a surge of anon hate circulating on tumblr in regards to fanfic and feedback/criticism. while it is inevitable that writers can’t have everyone to enjoy or like their fics, there is very fine line between constructive criticism and just plain rudeness. your wording and tone of your statements and questions can tether to either genuine concern or plain ignorance. and while some commentaries are appreciated, do not tell a writer on how to write their stories. it is their work—their fleshed out idea—and i know damn well that they didn’t hire you to be their editor. if you enjoy it, great. that’s awesome. if you don’t like it, fine. move on then. do not tell a writer that their works ‘suck’ or is ‘trash’ because all you’re doing is belittling their passion when they worked so hard to get to where they are now.
so please, be respectful to everyone, regardless if they come off as a friend to you. it doesn’t matter if you want to seem cool or laidback or not uptight or whatever it is you’re trying to present yourself. you don’t know them, and they don’t know you. if you have a question about a plot or a certain characteristic in a fic, then please ask away, but refrain yourself from saying anything unnecessary that could potentially be interpreted negatively to them. treat them as how you would like to be treated.
do not be demeaning. do not be disrespectful. do not be an asshole. do not, do not, do not.
writers are people, too.
