People who weren't gaming in the early 2000s sometimes have difficulty telling the Ratchet & Clank and Jak and Daxter franchises apart, but it's actually very simple: Ratchet is the creature you end up with when a furry can't decide what species they want their fursona to be, and Jak is what you get if you take this creature and shave it.

This pandemic is really proving that government has the means to solve all problems they just choose not to

I studied abroad in London in 2014 and my British Politics professor literally brought in a former homeless woman who had been made not-homeless when, during the 2012 Olympics, she and everyone else were given temporary housing to keep them off the streets. and while some people returned to being homeless afterwards, most people didn’t, because it turns out it’s easier to get a job and be secure if you already have the house thing taken care of.

the government could absolutely fix homelessness today, and it would solve homelessness not just temporarily, but for the long term. but the government chooses not to, not because it’s expensive (it’s more expensive to have homeless people than it is to give them homes), not because it doesn’t work (there are a lot of studies confirming that it does), but because some people think that being poor is a moral failing that can only be solved by shitting on them some more.

“In a remarkable instance of the geopolitics of mobility, the American space agency, NASA, found itself in conflict with its Soviet counterpart as the superpowers attempted to plan a historic linkup in space in 1975 between an Apollo and Soyuz spacecraft. The linkup was seen as an important part of the process of détente during the cold war. The conflict was over the design of the docking mechanism to be used in the linkup. Orthodox docking systems used a male part and a female part. The male part was seen to be active and would penetrate the female part, which was considered passive. The male part would move and the female part would remain motionless. The metaphorical implications of this arrangement became all too apparent during the planning of the Soyuz-Apollo mission and, to put it simply, neither party wished to be penetrated. To overcome this problem, the superpowers designed a whole new androgynous docking system, which featured interlocking capture latches where both sides could be active or passive.”

Tim Cresswell, On the Move: Mobility in the Modern Western World. New York: Routledge, 2006. p. 9.

“to put it simply, neither party wished to be penetrated”

Straight people are so fucking dumb

some quick research suggests this isn’t actually true. there are very good reasons to not want a dick-and-pussy system, like if you have two spacecraft with dicks and one has a problem, then you’re up shit creek without a pussy. it also means you can’t ever have two pussies fuck each other. a universal “androgynous” adapter just makes everthing a lot easier. if you read the wikipedia article, which is incredibly well-cited and absurdly detailed (clearly the work of an obsessive space nerd) there is not a single mention of any conversation between the american and soviet teams about who had to have the pussy. every source that talks about this either avoids explicitly claims of causality or is just some random dude with a website. of course straight male rocket scientists talked about their spaceships in sexual terms. so do straight male racecar drivers and straight men in basically every profession in the world. that doesn’t mean an entire program was created out of pussyphobia.

bringing this back bc i have seen this myth so many fucking times and i’m now making busting it my own personal mission

Some of Elbit’s factories are not owned outright, and therefore landlords and property managers are required to harbour their criminal activities. Those who work directly with Elbit are considered secondary targets of Palestine Action’s campaign. As the campaign against Elbit has grown over the years, so have the actions against secondary targets. Such actions have included covering their premises in red paint to symbolise Palestinian bloodshed, dismantling infrastructure, crashing events and storming offices. The sustained actions have paid off as four companies have cut ties with Elbit after targeted campaigns in the past three months alone.

I always reblog this one when I see it on my dash. When someone posts their own art, writing, or music here they are really hoping you will share it.

discord as a filehost will no longer be possible by the end of the year

EDIT: AS IN LINKING TO STUFF ISN'T GOING TO WORK. YOU CAN'T USE IT TO PERMANENTLY EMBED IMAGES IN AO3 OR TOYHOUSE OR WHAT HAVE YOU. THE LINKS THEMSELVES WILL EXPIRE AFTER 24 HOURS, BUT YOUR FILES AREN'T GOING TO BE DELETED FROM YOUR SERVERS

if you haven't noticed, copying a link for a file now appends special parameters to the end. these are a request signature, which indicates a specific request for that file. this request will expires after a few hours, so files will no longer be permanently available through a specific url.

while they are not currently necessary to view the file, they will be by the end of the year, assuming nothing changes.

please check that any websites you rely on are not hosting files through cdn.discordapp.com, and if they are, please archive those files through the IA using web.archive.org/save

thank you for your time

Some alternatives include the following:

EZGif also provides temporary links to images if you plan on just sharing.

ok so people are making fun of this but adding this with other anti-global warming tactics will work

This isn’t adding ice just for the sake of denial, it’s adding to the Earth’s albedo. This in turn actually makes the Earth’s climate cooler, and then more ice will be produced naturally because of this.

It isn’t a process we need to continue forever, in fact it’s one that needs to be calculated so that we don’t do it TOO MUCH. The only worry would be cooling down too much.

So yes, this is a good idea. It simply isn’t the only thing we should do because we still have gross pollution.

For the love of god do it . anything just do it. Give us hope.

Here’s the thing: Most environmental catastrophes humans have ever or are currently creating can be fixed. It’s not just a matter of “oh no, things are ruined, and maybe we can stop the degradation so that things don’t get any worse, but we’re stuck with how things are.” There are some things we can’t do, like bringing back extinct species. But there are a lot of other things we can definitely do, many of which are being done right now. The problem is that most of our willpower and effort is spent on bullshit tiny things that won’t solve the problem (individual recycling, etc.) and not on the large-scale things that can and will make a large-scale difference.

Ice caps are melting? Guess what! We know how to make ice. It’s not that hard. Designing mostly-automated robot ships to go to the poles and rebuild the ice caps is well within our current technical capabilities. We just need to fund it.

Deforestation on a massive scale? Destruction of other biomes? Guess what! We know how to plant trees. We know how to plant grasslands. We know how to take barren, lifeless land and turn it back into a viable biome. It’s not that hard. In a lot of cases, if there’s neighboring areas where that biome still exists, all you have to do is dump a few tons of biomass (plant clippings, food waste, etc.) on the barren land and stand back and wait. The biomass will provide nutrients and keep the topsoil from blowing away, and the plants and animals from the neighboring biome will move in. In two decades, even if you don’t do anything besides dumping the biomass on it, you won’t be able to tell what was the barren area and what was the still-existing biome.

Coral reefs dying? Now, coral reefs are a bit more fragile than most biomes, but guess what! We still know how to replant/rebuild them, and in fact are working on that in places affected by coral reef die-off! And we’re learning how to do it better every day.

Desertification? Guess what! We know how to turn desert back into green space. They’re doing it on a large scale in China and sub-Saharan Africa. There are several different techniques, none of which are even very technology-intensive. It takes money and time and labor, but it’s perfectly doable. We know this because we’ve done it.

Plastic in the ecosystem, particularly in the ocean? Guess what! There’s a lot of people working on this, both on “how to remove plastic from the ocean” and “how to reuse/recycle it more efficiently.” And the techniques are improving by leaps and bounds every year. This is a solvable problem. These are all solvable problems.

So if you’re crushed by the weight of the coming environmental catastrophe … don’t be. These are all solvable problems! We can stop things from getting worse, and we can fix the things we’ve broken. The issue is political, not practical.

On the political side, of course, is the need to tighten up environmental regulations across the globe. (What’s the statistic, that 90% of pollution is caused by 100 corporations?) And then of course, we need to fund these programs on a large enough scale.

In some ways the political aspect is the hardest, but consider this: we are at a tipping point. Things are changing about the way politicians talk about climate change and ecological degradation. More ordinary people are concerned about this, which means more pressure on politicians. One of the ways that things are changing is that people–even conservatives–are starting to talk about “job opportunities in new green fields” and switching the conversation so that it’s not “rainforest vs. jobs” makes political action a lot more possible. And no, it’s not going to happen on its own, but it can happen.

This is a solvable problem.

the default way for things to taste is good. we know this because "tasty" means something tastes good. conversely, from the words "smelly" and "noisy" we can conclude that the default way for things to smell and sound is bad. interestingly there are no corresponding adjectives for the senses of sight and touch. the inescapable conclusion is that the most ordinary object possible is invisible and intangible, produces a hideous cacophony, smells terrible, but tastes delicious. and yet this description matches no object or phenomenon known to science or human experience. so what the fuck

Avatar
skluug

this is what ancient greek philosophy is like

False! “Sightly” is a positive word, so the default way for things to work is good as well.

The true most ordinary object is beautiful, horrible sounding, very smelly, intangible, and delicious.

I still don’t think it matches anything in existence but to truly understand a thing one must know its true nature.

"touchy" is also a word! however it's mostly used for things that aren't objects, like subjects of conversation. it either means "oversensitive and irritable" or "requires careful handling/wording, delicate"

i think the second one works well for our hypothetical object. so we can use that.

therefore, the Default Object is:

  • beautiful
  • makes a horrendous sound
  • smells absolutely awful
  • is very fragile
  • tastes delicious

and i still cannot think of anything that matches this

behold, the default object!

I want everyone to look at how The New York Times (paywall-bypass link) covered this event - specifically this sentence:

“I will no longer be complicit in genocide,” a man says in the video, echoing language that opponents of Israel’s military offensive in Gaza have used to describe the war.

Read it. Read it again. Think of all of the ways in which they could have presented his statement. Read it again.

Every single Language Arts teacher should use this sentence to teach students how to read for bias.

Avatar
figsandtea

In case anyone is curious:

  1. De-personification - referring to Aaron Bushnell as just "a man" in an article specifically about him and his actions.
  2. Passive framing - he's not making a statement, he's "echoing" things other people have said, thus decreasing the impact of his statement.
  3. Referring to people who are against the genocide in Palestine as "opponents", implying that there is an equal conflict between two parties, instead of, you know, a genocide.
  4. Specifically naming Israel and not Palestine
  5. Describing the genocide as a war, again implying a conflict and not a colonial state murdering civilians.

Finally, the overall tone of this sentence is one which SPECIFICALLY distances both the reader and the actions of Aaron Bushnell from the genocide in Palestine. "Have used" being past tense instead of present tense especially stands out to me, because it, again, implies something which is not currently occurring, and separates Aaron Bushnell from the category of people who are opposing the genocide in Palestine.

The media is not impartial, not any media, anywhere, ever. The key is to be able to identify any bias and decide what that tells you about the statements contained within.

Tumblr's reply to the situation with CEO's transphobia is pathetic and you should not be thanking them for doing the bare minimum of saying he's not speaking for them. They fucking thanked that bitch.

The affected trans women are still banned.

A transphobic manchild offered no proper apology. Or stopped. He is also still in his position.

Tumblr is still factually transphobic. Keep pushing.

Yet another deleted blog, fantastic

They know what they’re doing. They know exactly what they’re doing when they see their users speaking out and nuke them. There is no error or compromise here, this is active malice on staff’s part and they will continue to treat black and trans bloggers like dirt if you just let them.

StumbleUpon once sent me to a supercut of Lion King, Lion King 1 1/2, and Lion King II, the main edit being that the scenes of Lion King and Lion King 1 1/2 were interspersed so that they happened in the order they actually happened.

stumbleupon not existing anymore can be directly traced to a dramatic decline in my mental health, I could do a thesis on it.

Astronaut.io - "These videos come from YouTube. They were uploaded in the last week and have titles like DSC 1234 and IMG 4321. They have almost zero previous views. They are unnamed, unedited, and unseen (by anyone but you)."

Marginalia - "This is an independent DIY search engine that focuses on non-commercial content, and attempts to show you sites you perhaps weren't aware of in favor of the sort of sites you probably already knew existed."

YOU GO THROUGH THE TROUBLE NOT TO THE TROUBLE

This does not even begin to cover the weirdness of cathode ray televisions.

They are literally particle accelerators that you point at your face.

And for eighty years, Americans' favorite thing to do was turn them on and stare at them for hours.

If you overcharge them, they emit gamma radiation.

Servicing them is like disarming a bomb -- their capacitors are enormous and are usually charged to hundreds or thousands of volts, and most of them have no bleed system that drains that charge, meaning that they can still be dangerous months or years after the last time they were powered up. A discharge can not only electrocute you, it can cause tools to melt or explode.

A black-and-white cathode ray TV driven by an unmodulated analog signal is theoretically capable of resolution that would require a microscope to perceive.

Old school CRT monitors had the same issues.

Back when, I worked at a small whitebox pc manufacturer. One day, a service tech brought back an older, gigantic (30 inch or so) AutoCAD monitor from a service call. The customer said "Made me feel nauseous"

So, we put it on the bench and fired it up. You immediately felt the hair on your body stand up, and my co worker put his hand up close to turn the power off, and his hand and forearm started spasming - I yanked the power cord from the wall as the tingle I was feeling began to feel hot.

No idea what was wrong with the thing, but it was kicking out some serious electro magnetic radiation.

Avatar
funnelcloudd

Remembering the almost imperceptible high pitched buzzing that let you know the tv was still on even when nothing was on the screen. Also putting your forearm near the screen and watching the hairs stand up

The little crackle if you touched the screen to wipe it...
