Hello. Since you’re a translation blog, I’m hoping you are Korean. I have a quick question. When do Koreans pronounce their Ws? Cause I know they pronounce waeyo as written but then Woozi is pronounced Uji?
This is a good question!
First off, let me introduce you to two Korean vowels: ㅗ (o) and ㅜ (u)Like other vowels, these are always preceded by a ㅇ so you’ll see them as 오 or 우 hereafter. These two are the characters responsible for making the W sound. Ex:오 + ㅏ (a) = wa 우 + ㅔ (e) = we 오 + ㅐ (ae) = wae우 + ㅣ (i) = wi우 + ㅓ (eo) = weo/woThe reason why when it comes to names like Woozi, Wonwoo, etc., the “woo” is pronounced as u or oo is because the character for it is 우, which is responsible for making the w sound when followed by other vowels. Since this cannot be attached by another u or oo, like how 와, 웨, 왜, etc. are formed, it’s just left as is. So you just read it as u or oo.I hope I explained that well. If you have any other questions, feel free to shoot a message anytime. :) -Yeosh
