Not only is Thor really smart, he’s also a really good teacher because he explains things to people the way they will understand. When he was explaining Yggdrasil to Jane, he respected her intelligence and explained the way she would visualize. When he explained Bilgesnipe to Coulson, he was again visual. He is smart and a good teacher, which makes him top class.

We assume Thor is dumb because he doesn’t understand our technology, as opposed to Loki in Avengers, who seems to understand how to operate the controls on the Hulk Cage, and never questions any technology that he comes across. But he doesn’t really interact with anything particularly technological other than the control panel which Fury basically demonstrated to him a few hours earlier. It’s not hard to guess that the big red button is the important one considering it’s behind a glass case. Thor has almost certainly received an education in the basics of things like Astronomy, Mathematics, Magic, History, Literature, Culture (Of Asgard and of other Realms). It’s heavily implied (and I think Thor actually says it at one point in the movie) that the science on Asgard is so advanced it seems like magic. So, Loki would probably have a greater understanding of Magic than Thor because he is a mage and Thor isn’t., but Thor probably still has a lot of knowledge in the theory side of magic. Which is why he knows (and is able to explain to Jane) about the about Tree of life.

But he has a kind of dopey personality and they play that up to be funny. The scene from the new Thor trailer where he throws something at Loki’s head is joke, but it’s also because he’s checking that Loki is actually sitting there, tied up, and not hiding a load of guards or something. So they’re finally incoporating Thor’s intelligence with Chris Hemsworth’s comedic abilities.

tl:dr Thor is actually quite intelligent but he has a dopy personality which is used for comic relief.
