Tohru & Kyo - New Year Dance🎍✨

My head canon is that although Kyo was never invited to the jyuunishi New Years celebration he was always in fact an amazing dancer. Now he and Tohru are married and they get to perform the New Years dance together for the Sohma family 🐱🍙🥺💕

I drew this some time around Tanabata (July 7th), but I took too long, so decided to upload it for HijiChi day instead.

I enjoy Chizuru's yukata design from the 2021 OVA and I love how she got it. Toshi's is from another official art (would have been nice if he and the other guys could have worn a yukata as well).

Hakuouki Ten’un no Shou translation and playlist

I have finished the translation and upload of the Saito route of Ten’un no Shou. I put it in this playlist for those interested to see when it is chronologically with the other fandisks event. This playlist will also be updated with Manyou no Shou content when it’s released (and I decide to work on it.)

I feel like it’s more interesting to mix the games up and keep a clean timeline instead of watching all games individually.

There's surprisingly little we know about Sannan Keisuke's life before he met Kondo Isami and joined the Shieikan. (In fact, while there are multiple biographies about most of the Shinsengumi's best-known members, I haven't yet found one about Sannan.)

One thing we do know is that Sannan was a scholar with a particular interest in the Chinese language.

That's perhaps not as strange as it might seem at first glance: a samurai would have been very familiar with the Four Books and Five Classics of Confucianism, which built the foundation to a proper young samurai's education, and which are obviously either translated from Chinese or read in the original Chinese.

We get a little glance of Sannan's interest in Chinese from his surviving writing, which comes in the form of a New Year's letter written to Kojima Shikanosuks in 1864.

The commentary in this blog entry about that letter is of particular interest:

"And even in this little card, Sannan’s love for the Chinese language is manifested. He spelled “world peace” as 四海 昇平.

四海 means “seas on four sides”, figuratively “the whole world”, and 昇平 - peace, tranquility, order - I did not find in any Japanese dictionary, I found it in Chinese … Although there are several analogs in Japanese that could be used."

But has anyone pointed out that when you take the kanji used to spell his last name, 山南, it's read Yamanami if translating from Japanese, but Sannan if translating from Chinese?

Good point. The on’yomi pronunciation (which sounds similar Chinese) for 山南 would be Sannan. Since he’s interested in Chinese, it makes sense that he might have used the this pronunciation instead of Yamanami.

I’ve read that Sannan was the second or third son of a sword instructor from Sendai who went to Edo to study during his teens [source]. However there’s no one named Sannan or Yamanami in the Sendai Domain, so it might not be the name he was born with, but a name he chose for himself. 

Another interesting thing is that he sometimes signed his name as 三男 [source] which is pronounce “sannan” and means “third man” or “third son”. Maybe he just came up with his name as wordplay on “Third son Keisuke” 😂

He also wrote Chinese poetry, a hobby he shared with Kondo.

You should know the answer to that question, but read it in great detail in chapter 6 of Hakuouki Reimeiroku! This chapter does get a bit gruesome at some point (mostly Interlude 12) and is quite bloody in the second half.

This is by far the longest chapter of the game, so a lot happens leading up to the final confrontation. Chapter 7 is foreseen for the end of the month.

well, this is the last of these that I can translate. sorry it's a bit late but I had a difficult time tracking down the sword name mentioned in this. Also, I won't be doing Sannan's since I got contacted for the raws... and I won't say no to not translating though I need to figure out what I'll do next.

Anyway, I ended up not working on this sooner than I would have liked... and I think the heat's getting to me again. (┬┬﹏┬┬) fucking hate summer.
