62. Lisa Frankenstein (Zelda Williams, 2024)

Diablo Cody remains mother, but while this has her signature blend of stylized, almost uniformly hilarious one liners and rich character depth, its plotting is not as taut as it should be, and first timer Zelda Williams isn’t quite up to the task of capturing the tone or visual dynamism necessary to pull this off. Kathryn Newton mostly slays but the movie often hangs her out to dry. Liza Soberano, you have my attention. Rating: 6.7/10

60. Heli (Amat Escalante, 2013)

Escalante’s command of the craft is omnipresent straight out of the gate here. Yes, thematically this is well worn territory, but its rhythms and character dynamics are idiosyncratic and richly textured. Rating: 8.4/10

59. Blissfully Yours (Apichatpong Weerasethakul, 2002)

The tedious minutiae of the everyday gradually gives way to the boundless, extracorporeal realm of the soul. Sensual, and not just in the sexual sense: this is a film you can smell, taste, and feel. There’s also a palpable sense that Weerasethakul is setting out to establish the audiovisual language of a new Thai cinema here, taking extra care to document its winding roads, indigenous vegetation, the distinct buzzing of native insects, and luxuriating in them.
