title: ?? word count: 897 rating: pg genre: fluff, han’s a nervous ‘lil bean prompt: Marriage/Loyalty from @techniiciian

He’s pieced together more than enough scattered fragments, Tatooine’s seemingly obscure culture is difficult to understand and Han wants light shed over the darkest corners without having to ask Luke a single thing.  Held together by the data he’s compiled and the questionable information Threepio so happily provided, ( much to Han’s annoyance ); Han has confirmed that there isn’t a grand ritual or anything of the like when it comes to a bonding ceremony.

Good.  Luke doesn’t care for fancy.

Given, he could simply ask, make positive, so as to not make an utter fool of himself.  After all, it isn’t a difficult question for Luke to fathom, quite on the right side of abrupt and completely bewildering for Han Solo to inquire.

It’d probably blindside the kid; perfect because Han doesn’t want another question vaulted back at him.  Luke has done that more than enough times with pretty much anything.   Now, he all but swears it’s a tactic Luke must’ve picked up while he was in the freeze because Luke would’ve never tried to do roundabouts with Han before, not when he could promptly blurt kraat out or express his opinion through a blatant, vehement expression.

Luke has changed a lot, that’s for sure, but he’s still the same farm boy Han met him as.  Their meeting on Tatooine, in that flea-bitten bar, still clear as a cloudless, Corellian summer day, in his mind.

A cherished memory more than anything.  Reminds him that even though things are different now, there’s at least something to anchor him to the past, to a time where he witnessed a different side of Luke: ‘The Last Jedi’.

Also surges his pride that there’s virtually no question as to who is closer to Skywalker out of most who’ve gotten to know him.  ‘Hard to get close to him’ is what he hears often.  Damned right, too!  Can’t say he doesn’t miss the way Luke once was  It’s all right though, it really is.  For he’s someone who’s able to catch a fleeting glimmer of stolen youth, on that impassive profile of Luke’s; carved straight out of stone, Luke embodies the state of physical calm on a daily basis.  Admittedly, it’s infuriating only a third of the time.

The rest of the time, Han thinks it’s rather sexy.

Speaking of sexy — this isn’t sexy, Han silently concedes, all ten fingers carding through his hair for the eighth time, standing in front of his ‘fresher’s mirror.  He is dressed nice enough, better than what he’s donned for the past few days in a row: grease slathered coveralls and an extremely heavy-duty visor that’s seen a nasty blaster shot or seven.

Aches to even tip his head back when he inspects the scruff he can’t get rid of, lacking the laser kit for it, which either benefits him or further projects the image that he’s a joke and this is a joke and Han Solo’ll never get to marry Luke Skywalker because he’s a goddamn joke juxtaposed to the last Jedi Master, final defender of the karkin’ galaxy.

But hey, by some unspoken miracles, he’s gotten this far, right?

Rightright, right,  he mutters to himself, hands twitching as he slides them flat over his chest, down to his stomach, registers the hard quivers rolling over his gut that’s a savage mix of both anticipation and fear.

Now, since when does Han Solo fear anything?

Well, to tell the truth: he fears absolutely everything, all the godsbedamned time — ain’t quite the point.  Though, he probably set himself up for that one.

It’s fine, it’s fine.     Things’ll go well, so long as he’s smooth about it.

    Patience is key.

Albeit something Solo lacks to a near concerning degree, he’d waited more than a year for Luke to get settled on Yavin, adjust to his new academy, the whole flock of new students to teach and to care for.  Younglings had run around, left and right, tripping visitors, tripping Han, wreaking utter havoc; in essence, driving Solo up the walls with just his bare hands.

It’s been going great.      Fantastic.

So much so that Han realized, not long ago, that somewhere in between the already heavily blurred lines, he’d tasted a forbidden fruit he’s never allowed himself to even consider the name of.  Could never afford it, even if it wasn’t at all expensive.  Damned cheap thing and easy to acquire in a galaxy like this, full of people and expectations and promise, simply wasn’t something he would’ve ever thought he’d want.

            Marriage.

… A family.

Hey, I couldn’t find you.  Where have you been?❞

And just like that, Han’s reality warps on the instant.  Flips him over as if the Falcon’s gravity settings have gone and inverted because of an overlooked bug in the system.  But they ain’t on the Falcon and Han is fairly sure he hasn’t hit the karkin’ ceiling.  Even if it feels like his guts might have.

Luke’s eyes have taken on a storm-blue in the gray light of his fresher.  Perceptive enough to probe every impulsive turn he could make, pass ambivalence altogether, and take him apart with nothing but unconditional love and acceptance.

Shavit.  Solo supposes he’s pretty damn lucky.

Are you alright?❞  Luke takes a step closer, and Han forces his mind three steps back.

❝Yeah.  You got some time?  Need to ask you somethin’.❞

luke’s devotion to han is absolutely undoubtable and without a doubt subtly romantic. vader chose to use him as bait and torture him instead of leia, even though he knew luke and leia were close. he also had no reservations with hurting leia as he had already done it in the past. so he chose han explicitly because he knew without a shadow of a doubt that HIS pain would make luke drop everything and throw himself foolishly into a trap to protect him. luke has shown his devotion and attraction to han time and time again, from the subtle glances to his chest and lips during their first encounter, to their deleted encounter in the sand, where they both resisted to drop one another’s hand. luke has ALWAYS believed in him and ALWAYS wanted to be near to him and to see him be the best man he can be.
his adoration for han is undeniable, but let’s not act like this dedication is one sided because it’s not! han is absolutely just as devoted to, and besotted with, luke as luke is to, and with, him. many fans make the mistake of thinking that this adoration is entirely one sided, when it is, in fact, equal. in episode iv, han knew he was going to leave the rebellion to continue doing work on his own because he’s not a people person, and he doesn’t like having too many people depending on him. he treated having luke and obi wan, and later leia, on the falcon with him as a nuisance and a chore. you’d think that he’d be perfectly content to leave them all behind and continue his life, but he doesn’t. he asks luke to come with him, and only luke. he doesn’t even bother to ask anyone else because no one else matters. his offer isn’t just a proposition for spending the rest of their lives together, but it’s also a show of han’s attachment and vulnerability. han leaves everyone he loves before he can get hurt, but now he’s opening himself to the possibility of attachment, new companionship, and, yes, pain. he never shows this same vulnerability to anyone else.
luke is hurt because he believes that han is abandoning him, but he’s actually trying to do the opposite: he’s trying to bring luke closer to him and protect him and stay with him. and even though he leaves, he still comes back, for luke. nobody would expect anything to mean more to han solo than his own survival, but suddenly he’s putting his neck out for something, for someone, that means more to him than his own life. and that running into each other’s arms reunion at the end of the film?? it’s NOT between han and his eventual love interest, it’s between him and luke. one of THE biggest romantic tropes is two people running into each other’s arms, it’s right up there with kissing in the rain!
and it doesn’t stop there. han threatens to leave the rebellion AGAIN, and just like clockwork, decides to stay and risk his life because luke needs him. when luke needs him, no matter the danger, han will ALWAYS come running. his declaration, “i’ll see you in hell”, speaks to the fact that he is absolutely ready and willing to give up his own life for luke to get home safe, and if he can’t save him, he can at least be there for him so luke won’t have to die alone. he knows his chances are slim, but he doesn’t care. whenever he tries to leave, to try to free himself of this attachment and undying devotion, luke needs him, and he  gets reeled back in willingly. and when he finds him, he cradles luke with the utmost care and gentleness, even as he frantically searches for his breath, and his pulse, for any sign that he’s still with him.
and then once luke is tended to health and it’s confirmed that he’s okay, han has the golden opportunity to leave the rebellion and forget about this whole mess, but he doesn’t. he stays and waits until luke is awake, and watches him floating in the bacta tank. the sight of him, all bruised and injured, is sometimes too much for han to look at, and throughout the scene he covers his mouth or paces around, thoroughly shook by the thought of him being hurt, and the thought of losing him. then, when luke awakes, han wants to make sure he’s one of the first things he sees, and sits as close to him as he can. they both look at each other with an unspoken, pure  adoration that has unparalleled throughout all the romantic elements in this franchise.
even after luke vanishes, han’s devotion to him remains undying, since he’s been spending the past twenty years searching for him high and low. and when he finds the falcon, and the two kids with luke’s youthful, high strung hope, his own hope of finding luke and bringing him home again is rekindled. he says that he knew him with nothing but sadness and love in his voice and on his face. he knew luke once, but he hasn’t known him in a very long time, and he will do anything to know him again. and now he never will.
tldr; han adored luke just as much as luke loved him, and their subtle romance is actually the most tragic and iconic love story in the history of the franchise thank you for coming to my ted talk.
