Why music might be killing sharks

For too long, sharks have been portrayed and perceived as the menacing, lurking creatures in the deep. Contrary to popular belief, we are much more of a threat to them than they are to us.

Researchers have found that the ominous music that often accompanies even documentary footage of them has inspired excessive fear about sharks.

In an experiment at UC San Diego, participants watched footage of sharks. Some scenes featured uplifting music, and others had a more daunting score.

The effect was what you might expect. Viewers saw sharks as intimidating creatures when they they also heard ominous music.

But with uplifting music (or none at all), viewers had a more positive impression of sharks.

This is problematic because rarely do we see shark footage without the ominous music, and the negative portrayals of sharks may be hindering conservation efforts.

“We know from prior research that conservation progress for sharks is sluggish compared to marine mammals and that this slow response may be due in part to the societal marginalization of sharks,” says study co-author Elizabeth Keenan.

After all, in the words of Senegalese conservationist Baba Diou, “we will conserve only what we love.”

And while they’re still not exactly a furry, cuddly rabbit, consider this: you’re more likely to be struck by lightening than fall prey to a fatal shark attack.

My vision of an artist :)

For me, we are all a part of an amazing garden, each of us making a part of it And we are all a little seed falling on the ground of being an artist.

The flowers represent our passion and like in a garden, many types exists !

When we know what we love the adventure begins, we meet amazing artists that will inspire us to grow up !

Flowers need the rain to grow up, so your passion will need some difficulties to grow as well. Après la pluie vient le beau temps- After the rain comes the sun !

And then at your turn you will inspire the young and new flowers to grow as well !

For the talented artists I used the colors of the flowers to show the directions they chose, many went to lots of them while some artists prefer to only chose one (like the lion and the white flowers) since, the flower on the tail is red, that means that choosing one direction can lead you to another one in the futur, who know ? You don’t see it yet :)

I hope this little reminder will help you keeping going !! Always keep it up and KEEP GOING !!

Bonne chance :) that means Good luck in French ^^

The Art of Valerio D’Ospina

Valerio D’Ospina was born in Taranto in 1980. On July 14, 1999 he received an artistic diploma from Liceo Artistico Statale “Lisippo” in Taranto, where he was first introduced to the world of art. In November of the same year he moved to Florence to further his artistic studies. During his stay in Florence, he assiduously visited museums where he learned the technique of the great masters and was given permission to replicate original works of art in the Palazzo Pitti Museum. He also visited the major Italian artistic capitols frequenting, with particular interest, the museums, art fairs and art biennals.

In 2003, he moved to Paris for a short while where he studied firsthand the masterpieces of his favorite local artists. On February 25, 2005, after preparing an experimental thesis in the study of “fisiognomica”, Valerio graduated with a degree in Painting. Upon obtaining his degree, in September of 2006 he enrolled in the COBASLID (a two‐year‐long statal course to become a professor of art) in the Accademia di Belle Arti of Florence. Since July 2009 Valerio is established in US where he lives and works and is ranked by several distinguished art magazines, both national and international, as one of the most significant painters of cityscapes and industrial scenarios, who live and work in America.

The Art of Nicolas de Crécy

After studying at the Angoulême comics art school, Lyon-born Nicolas De Crécy made his debut in 1987 with ‘Bug Jargal’, an adaptation of a work by Victor Hugo in cooperation with Sylvain Chomet. He then worked with the French Walt Disney Studios for two years. Meanwhile, he found the time to make the highly acclaimed album ‘Foligatto’, scripted by fellow Angoulême school artist Alexios Tjoyas.

He teamed up with Chomet again and created 'Léon la Came’ in magazine À Suivre 1995, a masterful satire of the post-industrial society and neo-liberal madness. De Crécy also worked on Chomet’s feature film 'La Vieille Dame et les Pigeons’ (1998). De Crécy has since experimented with several genres and styles. He is the author of the playful black and white 'Monsieur Fruit’ series, the baroque full-color fantasy 'Bibendum Céleste’, the silent comic 'Prosopopus’ and the absurd anthropomorphic series 'Salvatore’. He made the futuristic 'Période glaciaire’ for Futoropolis and the Louvre Museum in 2005. Futuropolis also published his travelogue 'Journal d'un fantôme’ in 2007.

The images in this set were found on his Instagram, you can see more on his work on his blog 500 DESSINS.

Glowworms Illuminate New Zealand’s Caves

Photographer Shaun Jeffers traveled to the Waitomo area to capture its limestone caves, which are illuminated by glowworms. The alien-like critters emit a phosphorescent turquoise light.

Glow Worms !?!

They are the predatory maggots of a fungus gnat and the strands are made of a (in some species) poisonous mucus.

When moths, mosquitoes or other tiny insects enter the cave they will normally look for the sunlight or moonlight of the cave entrance to escape, but the collective glow of the maggots fools them into thinking they’re already outside. They’re basically imitating a sky together!

So they're like the Barnacles in Half-Life

#LoveWins

This post will turn one year old tomorrow, what a year, so much has happened that it feels like this occurred a long time ago (in a galaxy far, far away…). If anything the SCOTUS decision, like the election of a black President or the proposed amnesty towards immigrants, has made the haters scream louder and be even more violent against those they seem to perceive as the enemy.

To all my followers, be safe, be strong and stand tall. In order for this to get better we all have to push forth together.
