Firefox being fast/secure/supporting new web standards isn't enough. we need to make extremely useful websites that don't work on chrome.

No, this won’t work. If they don’t work on chrome, chrome users won’t find out that they’re useful.

You have to make an extremely useful website that works on chrome but then have it stop working and instead display a message saying “It looks like you’re trying to use a bad/insecure/non-standard web browser - try switching to firefox” with a download link where the really useful content used to be

make websites that neg chrome users

So, what’s new in the knitting community today Polecat? Well, I’m glad you asked because it’s these guys.

The fuck? You ask. Those sound like a couple of hustle culture, low level tech bros. Yes, yes they are. And they spent $80,000 on a knitting domain name thinking that they’re going to make millions.

Yes.

Really.

Do they knit? No.

Are they aware of Ravelry (the leading social media & marketplace site for knitters & crocheters)? Also, no.

Have they reached out to notable knitting pattern designers? Also, no.

Are they familiar with the culture of Local Yarn Stores? Also, no.

Does one of them at least have a 6 year old who learned to use a knitting loom? Yes!

Needless to say, Reddit & Twitter ripped them a new one. It has been very amusing.

………….

It’s two days later and I can find ZERO information on their blog about this project, except for the “knitting community response” post. I can, however, reconstruct from reddit and twitter how utterly and thoroughly they got eviscerated by the knitting community, and it’s a delight to watch.

I got you friend….

(The podcast seems genuinely missing however.)

I listened to bits of the podcast bc I honestly just kept waiting for them to say something meaningful instead of throwing out buzzwords like that replaced having an actual plan…and let me tell you the techbros have no plan and even less respect.

They consider their only real competition to be box stores, China, and grannies who have run a blog for 20 years. 😬

And the Chinese are apparently disadvantaged because they don’t list things properly, they don’t knit, and they can’t do videos because no one wants to see Asians in videos. Customers only want to see “western people” in their opinion.

It’s implied the old ladies are in the same category as small businesses?

So there’s all this good in-between market space that they can take advantage of to do… well they’re gonna sell stuff apparently using Amazon. They clearly don’t know what yet, but they’re gonna have innovative stuff. At least a dozen products maybe more!

Their business model:

Also they didn’t want to go with fishing as their new business because it’s so simple with its lures and poles. No room for innovation there. 🙃

Would you be surprised they mentioned coming up with their ideas over drinks multiple times? Also they talked about it while on a road trip? They looked up the metrics on the word knitting and thought the market was reasonably in the 41k range. You know not too saturated or something?

Basically they’re setting this up as a demonstration of look how I made my money and if you follow my capitalist recipe for just fucking around and hoping other people are stupid enough to click links on google, you too can make boatloads of money! type thing. So they didn’t really think the knitters would find out about it this soon and dogpile on them for their bs, because if you listen to them they don’t care about knitting. Their podcast wasn’t for knitters. It was for other folk interested in get rich quick stuff. I think one of them said something like website names were the first NFTs as if that was a good thing.

They basically deserve every incensed remark at their little venture.

Techbros and their bullshit are a pox on society.

They picked literally the worst fucking community to try to infiltrate and it’s FUNNY AS SHIT. Like, what other hobbies have people FAKE THEIR OWN DEATHS?

Fiber artists are the most feral of all craftspeople. These guys have literally NO IDEA what they are in for. (Not that they seem to be taking the project seriously.)

…Heh. Maybe *they’ll* wind up faking their own deaths?

I want to know about the knitters faking their deaths now

To be accurate, it’s not the knitters doing it, it’s the dyers (as in person who dyes the yarn, but the irony is noted) that market to the knitters!

See what happens is, person who is passionate about fiber art decides to become indie dyer.

Indie dyer starts a small business dyeing (or spinning and dyeing but that requires more equipment and different expertise) yarn.

If the yarn is pretty and good quality and well marketed (Ravelry), dyer becomes popular and gets many orders, yay!

(This is because if you’re going through the effort to make something by hand you want high quality and preferably unusual materials to make it out of so your finished product is as cool as possible. Also the Venn diagram of people who like to make their own clothing and people who like supporting small businesses overlaps a lot.)

But indie dyer is passionate about yarn, not great at business, gets overwhelmed by popularity, takes too many orders, can’t keep up, sometimes doesn’t keep good TRACK of orders, things get out of control. It’s not unusual for them to undercharge for their yarn as well, because it started as a passion project.

Sooo sometimes an indie dyer who has overcommitted and under-organized and generally gotten themselves deep into a hole decides, well, fuck it, I’m gonna fake my death, that will solve this problem.

Knitters are sad, the remaining yarn becomes a hot commodity in yarn swaps because people played yarn chicken and lost or didn’t order enough to start or didn’t get everything they ordered (and NO, you can’t just swap in something similar, if the weight and tension and color are different it looks awful) and then a NEW indie dyer starts advertising these GORGEOUS colorways themed after butterfly patterns and the cycle begins anew.

I need to know more about the knitting community and why it’s considered feral. I have as much knowledge about it and its market as these two guys and it feels like I can’t appreaciate the joke fully, which is a shame man XD

@dargeon-lissa It takes a certain personality type to, effectively, stab something tens of thousands of times to make a thing, and to do this FOR FUN, often for many years or decades, sometimes doing really ridiculously intricate projects, like very fine, beaded lace shawls or intricate stranded colorwork.

Among other things, people get really PASSIONATE and INTENSE about it, and about what the Right Way To Do It it.

Also the whole path some people end up taking from knitting or crocheting to “I could dye my own yarn” to “It’d be really neat to spin my own fiber, too!” to “You know, I could take up weaving!” and the next thing you know, you’ve quit your job and are raising alpacas somewhere.

also, pretty much the only thing people agree on is that you have to love the color black to an unhealthy degree to want to use it in large quantities in your projects because it is the WORST color to work with because you can’t see what you’re doing half the time.

Tumblr Blaze is very good because tumblr correctly deduced that if they ran a real advertising service using targeted demographics we’d have burnt this site to the ground, but ALSO correctly deduced that we would be overjoyed to collectively pay large amounts of money to spread shitposts onto completely random dashes in a delighted flurry of slightly malicious mischief. You really do gotta hand it to em on this one, A+ problem solving.
