pantry pas de deux
— evelyn nesbit
i do this thing
where i don’t
close cabinets
all the way
i take the plate
or the cookies
or the glass
but don’t shut the cupboard
i wonder if
someday
someone
will stomp their feet,
say
close the cupboard
close the cabinet door
i’ll hit my head
yes it will be
a little funny
and i know you will laugh
laugh it up
until you cough,
throw up
all over the floor
maybe that will
teach you
to
shut
the cupboard door
didn’t your mother
teach you manners?
all the things
in this beautiful city
and you can’t
manage
to
close the cupboard?
sorry my sweet
i will say
i am too brittle
too weak
forgive me
and
we can kiss
splintered tears
off frozen cheeks
give
your face
over
to little hands
my dear
i cannot close the cupboard door
but
for now
i’ll be here.
