There’s an Arab proverb which goes by,

“Do good and throw it in the sea”

Meaning, do good for people and forget about it, don’t expect anything from them.

Ibn Rajab al-Hanbali رحمه الله said:

“Whoever is mindful of Allāh when he is young and strong, Allāh will take care of him when he is old and has become weak, and will bless him with good hearing, eyesight, strength and reasoning.

One of the scholars who lived beyond the age of one hundred years and enjoyed good strength and reasoning, jumped up in a lively manner one day and was asked about that. He said: “I kept these physical faculties from sin when I was young and Allāh has preserved them for me now that I am old.”

The opposite also applies; one of the salaf saw an old man begging from people and said: “This is a weak man who ignored Allāh when he was young, so Allāh is ignoring him now he has grown old.”

Oh Lord, write me what you think is good for me.

you have so much time, so much ahead of you. you will grow and you will heal. you will find the love of your life, pass the test, visit the place you always wanted to visit, learn the language. in some years you won’t think about the bad grade you got in that one exam, and maybe you will also see that what seems like a failure now was an opportunity all along.

i wrote this five years ago and it couldn’t be more true.

as much as i love the trope of a character falling fast and hard for someone, i also love the subtle descent where they don’t really think about it; where that person is just kind of there until one day they realize that person is so ingrained in their lives and they cannot do without them. where there is no conscious effort on either ends to become romantically involved but somehow the thought of them being with someone else is disconcerting. where “i enjoy being with you” unwittingly turns into “i want to be with you”
