ARRANGED MARRIAGE IN SPACE!
My novella Space Raiders of Bokkau is now available from your digital content provider of choice.
Hey there, some of you might remember this fic in its original incarnation LOL (Black Sails fandom). Please consider leaving me a good review so that people who don't know what's good for them can find it and enjoy it too ;)
Its #BatAppreciationDay so please appreciate this awesome 19th century Japanese kosode decorated with embroidered lucky bats, photographed in 2019 at The Life of Animals in Japanese Art exhibition at the National Gallery of Art in DC:
Kosode with Bats Japan, Edo - Meiji periods, 19th century silk twill, paste-resist dyed, embroidery, 67⅜ × 48⅞ in. National Museum of Japanese History, Chiba Prefecture
“In the West, bats - nocturnal in habit and denizens of dark places tend to be viewed as unlucky, but in China they have long been considered an auspicious motif (one of the characters used to write the word "bat" is a homonym for good fortune). The Kabuki actor Ichikawa Danjüro VII (1791-1859) used bat motifs in his costumes, and the perception of these animals as a chic design element spread rapidly throughout Japan in the nineteenth century. Here a great number of them are arranged in right-left symmetry from the base of the collar to the hem.”
The above info is from the official exhibition catalog - this bat kosode is on p. 124:
it drives me bonkers the way people don't know how to read classic books in context anymore. i just read a review of the picture of dorian gray that said "it pains me that the homosexual subtext is just that, a subtext, rather than a fully explored part of the narrative." and now i fully want to put my head through a table. first of all, we are so lucky in the 21st century to have an entire category of books that are able to loudly and lovingly declare their queerness that we've become blind to the idea that queerness can exist in a different language than our contemporary mode of communication. second it IS a fully explored part of the narrative! dorian gray IS a textually queer story, even removed from the context of its writing. it's the story of toxic queer relationships and attraction and dangerous scandals and the intertwining of late 19th century "uranianism" and misogyny. second of all, i'm sorry that oscar wilde didn't include 15k words of graphic gay sex with ao3-style tags in his 1890 novel that was literally used to convict him of indecent behaviour. get well soon, i guess...

reblog if your name isn't Amanda.
2,121,566 people are not Amanda and counting!
We’ll find you Amanda.
this has almost 11 million notes what is this
I’ve never seen this post once in 10 years on this site
I’ve never even heard of this before tho??? Wtf??????????
oh my god, I didn’t think there were any surviving versions of this post left
For those who weren’t around in the Deep Lore times, this is one of the relics of the editable post era. This post has THE SINGLE HIGHEST NOTES of ANY post on this site, bar none, but with more than a dozen variations. Every single post you’ve ever seen with more than 3 million notes has been a different version of this one.
This is the “Dean’s Gym Shorts” post. This is the Flubber post. This is the original “Reblog if you support gay people” post. it was ALL of them. before half the site got nuked, it had even more notes than it has now - at one point, well over 15 million, and that was years ago.
This, with no exaggeration, is the ONE TRUE heritage post
for all I know prev could be lying but either way it’s cool, right?
Oh no. My name is definitely not Amanda.

Pimping my hot wife's services. Uh, healing services. Not sexual. Unless you're trying to have a baby or whatever, she totally helped her cousin get pregnant (on purpose).
LOL it's true, I did! And fixed a friend's nonexistent libido too (because she asked me to)! I'm just over here doing the Goddess' Work 🙏🏻

Endless Bells Hells
This is part of my ongoing Discworld jacket embroidery project. Of course Great A'Tuin has to be on there. And of course it has to be the biggest one of them all.
I'm going to put the finished product in my masterpost, but I'm so proud of the thing that I have to put it in an extra post beforehand. Enjoy!
Update!!!
Behold: the elephants! 😁
The turtle moves! Now it's just the "cargo" left. And the universe. Well.
Update 3: Why did I have to try single thread for the disc. Why. How did I ever think that was a good idea. This is taking aaaages.
I'd say never again, but I know myself too well...
Still trying to decide whether to outline the landmass with darker thread or not. It would make the lands more distinct - but it might also make it look more like a comic. If you have any thoughts on it, let me know. I'll only decide once I've finished the rest of the disc and that'll be at least a week, if I had to guess.
I finally had some time to continue and the disc is done! Now just some stars, planets, etc...
My estimate is that this took about 150 hours. About half of that went into the disc because I discovered single thread embroidery.
And because I always think it's really interesting to see the back of the embroidery - bonus:
On to the next one! Maybe I'll do the luggage now.
Wow..!
Fuckin HELL, bud. You're an embroidery 🪡 HERO. SPECTACULAR!!!
The passing of absolute legend Trina Robbins just hit me in the chest like a punch when I learned it this morning.
She was such a force, an exceptional human being, witty, quick-witted, brilliant and talented, always crusading for women’s rights in and out of the industry.
I met her and worked with her only a few times, but each time she was an absolute delight and her exceptionality just poured from her. We will miss you a lot Trina.
All my condolences to her family and friends.
