I don’t do the dishes

But if I’m in the kitchen I’ll empty the drying rack, let the porcelain clink together as placed in their spots

I don’t do the dishes but when the kettles empty I fill it up to a liter for someone’s cup of tea

I don’t do the dishes but if they pile up, I’ll steal the cloth draped on his shoulder and give my father a small smile while my mother continues to tell us her day

I don’t do the dishes but I put away leftovers to make the job easier, fill the sink with water and bid thanks while rushing away

I do the dishes. My father is drying as I wash. My mother is filling up the kettle and telling us about her day.

It’s mundane. It’s supper. It’s home.
