You gotta hand it to Fig. All of the Bad Kids were given foils this season and they got to decide how much they wanted to engage with that part of the plot. Gorgug only interacted with Mary Ann in passing despite them both being on the Owlbears. Fabian noped out of chatting up Ivy once she crossed a line with Mazey. Riz was so busy that he truly had no time to engage with Kipperlilly even though she's obsessed with him. Kristen interacted a bit with Buddy but spent way more time verbally sparring with Kipperlilly. And Adaine was somewhat interested in Oisin but never overtly acted on it.

But Fig?

She's in Ruben's WALLS. She's in his DREAMS. She's faking her alter emo's death. She's got the Fantasy FBI after her. She's SO SO tiny. No one is doing it like Fig's doing it.

I love the bad kids more than words can say, but that group did not get their title from nowhere; those kids were bad as hell during their freshmen year. Like, I'm just thinking about the rest of the freshman going into the backwoods to practice while the bad kids are off fighting a bunch of middle schoolers and stealing Gilears car 😭😭

After the mall fight, I wrote that FHJY is partly about adult failure, but wow was I understating the case. You need negligent, absent, and generally useless adults in any story about teen heroes because otherwise why are there going to be teen heroes, right? From Arthur to Arianwyn, we have no shortage of parents and authority figures who fit that mold.

But what we have in Jace, and especially in Porter, is even worse - not neglecting your duty as an educator, but using it to corrupt. Not just villainy, but grooming children into it. They are absolutely repulsive on every level.

As soon as Brennan said that Oisin had a wizard's tower in Ruben's house, I thought of Adaine's room in Mordred Manor and the way two parties came together in oversized houses to plot their adventures together. Except while the Bad Kids are half-feral products of teacher neglect, the Rat Grinders were carefully taught to hate other kids who were really not all that different from them. They were guided on missions and given unconscious monsters to kill and told over and over exactly what they had to do to show their gratitude. And now they think they can't stop - they're all in it together.

That said? The email from Jace telling the Rat Grinders to stop antagonizing the Bad Kids was fucking hilarious. Without Kipperlilly acting like a little asshole at the start of the year, Kristen wouldn't have run for class president and the Bad Kids might not have glommed onto the Rat Grinders' plans until it was too late. They didn't even know those kids existed! But Jace and Porter decided to use that inter-party "rivalry" as a hook to catch the High Five Heroes, and now it's going to bite them in the ass. Ha!
