Q - How much are you involved with the anime?

(Note: in a past interview Katou Sensei said “All I told them was to make the food look delicious.” We know she was kidding because her designs for the non-manga characters have been published. Now we find out how kidding she actually was!!!)

Katou Sensei - At first I review the script with the director and we go back and forth. I’ll say something like “This is set in summer,” he’ll say “How about winter?” “No, it’s going to be  summer.”

I check the character design, aesthetic and props. I look over the art direction and the key art. I also check all the visual media and posters that will be released. (Note: ‘key art’ means key scenes that have been animated, ones with a lot of movement such as fight scenes.)

Shihei Lin said he goes to all the meetings with the Aniplex production staff. (He’s like the bridge between Aniplex and Katou Sensei.)

Q - What are you looking forward to in the anime?

Shihei Lin said he can’t wait to see Fujou and it’ll be interesting to see his movement and personality onscreen, and whether or not he’ll be really creepy.

Matsumoto Miho said she worked closely with the animators on Fujou’s movement and that he’s 3D rendered. She’s excited about how he’s gonna creep everybody out.

Q - What animals would Rin and Yukio transform into?

Katou Sensei - I posted these sketches on my Twitter already, the ones with the animal ears. Rin would be a white tiger and Yukio would be an abominable snowman.

Q - Do you watch a lot of horror movies?

Katou Sensei - I watch a lot of genres but since AoEx started I’ve been watching more and more horror movies. I really like The Exorcist; when the priest becomes an exorcist and saves her, I thought that was wonderful.

Matsumoto Miho - When I was in school I really liked the fantasy genre but now I’m drawn to anything with demons in it.

Shihei Rin - I laugh when something is scary. I saw “Esther” and laughed throughout!

Katou Sensei - I liked “Esther,” too. But I don’t laugh when something is scary, I get really scared.

(Note: “Esther” is the Japanese title of the Jaume Collet-Serra film “Orphan.”)

Q - Have you ever had a supernatural experience?

Katou Sensei - (laughs) No, I haven’t. But I have hallucinated! Once I had sleep deprivation and hallucinated a poltergeist was throwing books. I was so afraid I couldn’t get up so I kept counting to myself “1, 2, 3…1, 2, 3” and trying to get up on three. When I walked over there all the books were where they should be.

Matsumoto Miho - I’ve never seen one but I create ghosts inside my mind.

Shihei Rin - I’ve had one.

Katou Sensei - Really?!

Shihei Rin - Yes! Once I thought the deadline was in three days, but it turns out it was that very day…it was super scary!
