Magic Kaito: The Clockwork Heart now remastered!

And so Magic Kaito took its sophomore tour, a little shakier but no matter—readers still liked what they saw. In two shakes, Gosho Aoyama got his wish: an ongoing salary for Kaito stories as long as he (and/or audience interest) could hold out. Month after month after...

Yes, months. Weekly Sunday was nice enough to hand out guest-spots, but you didn't think it was going to give an ongoing slot to a rookie who needed assistants to finish his college doujins, did you? So off our hero went to the monthly Zōkan offshoot, with all the other rookies on their way in and oldsters on the way out (hey, at least they gave him a corner of the cover!). If his heart was pure and his stories were good, the legend went, one day he might rise above.

God, did he deliver.

No spoiling this one, folks. If you only know Kaito from the anime—or better yet, from Conan—you're in for an absolute ride. TV has never touched it, possibly never will, but it's the one post-Origin, pre-Hakuba chapter every fan remembers. Hell, probably the only one that still has steady fanwork presence. Gosho's turn as an Ongoing™ artist was off with a bang.

(Some say—some sigh—that Magic Kaito never got this wild again, rarely even tried. Maybe they're right. But the shine is no less for it.)

Magic Kaito: Police Soirée now Remastered!

So Magic Kaito took its premier pas, and it was good. Readers applauded, a few letters came in, and the writer-editor pipeline was all fired up for the next one. No sophomore slump this, it would have everything that made the first one great: action, intrigue, lore, laughs, all wrapped around the latest offerings of one M. Scorsese.

That story was "Hustler vs. Magician", and it got as far as a whole-ass manuscript before someone in Shonen Sunday's chain of command went "Nope. Not feeling it. Try again, kid."

A weaker man might've broke. A weaker man might've went "Fuck this, I hear Jump's looking for people!" Gosho Aoyama was not that man.

And so came this, Kaito's official second adventure, to the stands—about three months after the first. God knows how many all-nighters it took to pull the thing together, but it's hard to argue the results weren't worth it. Read along this charming little yarn, and see if you can tell what new director Gosho's paying homage to!

Magic Kaito: The Phantom Thief Reborn now Remastered!

1987.

On this day, May 27, history was made. In California the Golden Gate Bridge turned fifty, having survived enough paraders to sink an aircraft carrier. In Vienna, Portugal smashed the Germans for the European Cup—its first in twenty-five years. Along the Baltic a crazy little pilot was completing a course that would shake the Soviet Bloc 'til nothing was left,

And all through Japan, Shogakukan was hawking its latest product: Weekly Shonen Sunday, Vol. 29, Issue 26. Latest—and perhaps greatest. The lineup spoke for itself: Osamu Ishiwata's B.B.! Mitsuru Adachi's Rough! Action! Intrigue! Bikers! Baseball! Robots! War! A girlfriend or two, even!

Oh, and some hick from Tottori started something called Magic Kaito.

"Keh heh heh," the old hands must've chuckled as they dragged their Marlboros. "Kid wins one contest and thinks he's an artist. How long d'ya say he lasts? Three months? Two?"

It's 2023 now, and Mr. Kuroba's still laying flowers on all their graves.

What's there left to say about this Thief of Thieves, this Moonlight Magician who continues to thrill, tease, and tempt us so? Five volumes of manga, a nub of screentime every three or four years... and he might well claim more fans—or at least fanworks—than anyone else in the Conan machine. Not excepting the little Meitantei himself.

Today, we celebrate him in the grand tradition of overambitious weebs: with a reissue of his original adventures, every panel and page retranslated and redone in HD (whatever the hell the manga equivalent of that is). Starting here, with his secret origin—and following Sunday's original publication run right to the end! Or 'til Shogakukan C&D's us all into oblivion.

In any case, we hope you'll be joining us on joyride. Whether you fell in love with him since that very first Thai-to-Eng scanlation, or you learned "Hey, the hat guy from Conan has his own series?!" just yesterday, there's something here for everyone.

Now, as a wise man once said: Show no hajimarida!

Happy 2023!

This is a gift I did for @mirrorfalls for the CoAi Secret Santa event on the Coai Server~ The prompt I chose was “Cooking” and “Hero” since we all know Shinichi probably can’t cook for himself and needs Shiho to step in and save the day
