Want to play a game while you wait for the big game? 😊 In SILVER IN THE BONE, Tamsin, her brother Cabell, and the other Hollowers in their guild break into the vaults of sorceresses to find legendary and magical relics. To break into my vault and find a long, perhaps Valentine’s Day-appropriate, excerpt, all you have to do is go to tinyurl.com/readsilver and enter the missing word from the quote on the second slide as your version of a skeleton key. 🗝️ (I truly believe you can guess this one! 😘) This excerpt is one of my favorite Tamsin + Emrys scenes, and I can’t wait for you to read it!! #silverinthebone #alexandrabracken #sitb #arthurianlegend #celticmythology #yalit #bookstagram https://www.instagram.com/p/Coka6i0JusN/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

The Darkest Minds Series Reading Order

Good morning! I hope everyone is enjoying a beautiful start to their autumn! I’m keeping busy with preparations for my brother’s wedding next month and editing LORE, my upcoming YA that should hopefully be out Fall 2020/Winter 2021.

Out of curiosity (and, okay, procrastination on aforementioned edits), I was looking at my site analytics and noticed a big uptick in people searching for the series reading order for The Darkest Minds. That totally fits with the amount of questions I get about it on both Twitter and Instagram. I put up an Instagram highlight about it, but I realized it might be nice to have my recommended reading order available over here on my actual website.

Let me start off by saying that there is a ton of flexibility in this, and there’s no one right way to read the series! I’ve worked hard to make sure that all of the material outside of the main novels isn’t necessary to follow the main storyline—my goal with them was to highlight different areas of the TDM world and give you some “off camera” scenes, so to speak.

RECOMMENDED READING ORDER TO MAXIMIZE YOUR FEELS

  1. The Darkest Minds
  2. In Time (novella in the Through the Dark bind-up)
  3. Liam’s mini novella (available for free by subscribing to my newsletter)
  4. Never Fade
  5. Liam’s Short Story (found in the new paperback edition of The Darkest Minds)
  6. Vida’s Short Story (found in the new paperback edition of Never Fade)
  7. Sparks Rise (novella in the Through the Dark bind-up)
  8. In the Afterlight
  9. Clancy’s Short Story (found in the new paperback edition of In the Afterlight)
  10. Beyond the Night (novella in the Through the Dark bind-up)
  11. The Darkest Legacy

When I say the “new paperback edition,” I mean the updated covers that were released in January 2018:

If you’ve seen something called The Rising Dark, that’s a digital bind-up of the short stories found in these editions that my UK publisher has released to UK readers only. My international publishers have all chosen to release these stories in different ways. Some have chosen to release the extras as digital-only or decided to bind up certain stories and not others. If you can’t find a story, or you’d like to see one of them translated and published, my recommendation is to directly contact the publisher for your language/country via social media or email.

You mentioned that characters' resistance to Orange abilities is on a spectrum. How do certain characters - say, Cate and Rob (I'm a big fan of the way they're written character wise) as examples, fare in that department?

Are you the Anon that keep asking about them? Just wondering because I’ve gotten more questions about them the last two open inboxes than I have all of the other years combined and I’m fascinated by this!

Neither would fare well in that department. Only Chubs has show some resistance to it. I would say that anyone guarded would last longer than someone like, say, Liam, who is not especially guarded.

(I think this also answers your related ask, @raven-dreaming?)

Any more news about Brightly Woven? It’s the one book I have yet to read.

That’s all I have for you so far, I’m sorry! We’re working on bringing it back in a new format with some much needed tweaks. I’m hoping I’ll be able to share more soon!

Which darkest moments in the DM series challenged you the most?

Pretty much all of Never Fade, actually. That book still feels very dark to me, though the ending of the novella In Time also haunts me.

Did Clancy actually want to help the other kids? Like, did he really set up project jamboree to keep the reds safe, or was it so he'd have an army? Or was he twisted enough he thought them being his army was in their best interests? I know he had some degree of affection for ruby and nico, or thought he did, with him trying to abuse and manipulate them to be what he wanted? Why did he make east river?

At various points in the trilogy, I do think Clancy believes he wants to help the kids and is helping them. He’s not always wrong in what he tells Ruby about their world, but he also rarely does anything that doesn’t immediately benefit himself in some way. My feeling is that Clancy wanted an army to hurt his father and be able to fight back against him, which might have helped the other kids in the long run, but I can’t say that with any certainty. Clancy’s driving principle in this series is to hurt the person who hurt and betrayed him, and I think he’s convinced himself that the only way to get something is to take it, whether that’s by force or manipulation.

Hey Alex! I hope you’re having a nice day :) Are you excited for the rise of skywalker and do you have any theories about it?

Avatar

I’m excited for it! Amazingly enough, I don’t really have any theories about it--I feel like I need to rewatch TFA and TLJ because I’ve kind of lost track of where we are story-wise and I haven’t been able to keep up with the books being published. What about you?

I think two of the things that made tdm (& tdl) instant favorites of mine are the way trauma is dealt with (especially zu's), and how easily I could see myself in the story. I was born in 2001, so the world felt so visceral. Reading tdl just enhanced that. Zus trauma comes from a similar stage in life as mine & the way she reclaims herself, and allows herself to hurt but still go on living and healing resonated so much with me I cant put it into words. Did something inspire her tdl growth?

Avatar

Thank you for this. I’ve never experienced trauma at her level (and I’m genuinely sorry to hear that you have 💖), but, like Zu, I’m someone who feels like they always have to present as “fine”--and should be “fine”--even when they aren’t. Zu never wants to let anyone down. She puts a ton of pressure on herself in that way, and I think she ultimately denied herself the time and resources she needed to begin to process what she’d experienced, mostly because she is incredibly empathetic and tends to focus on others. Not to mention, there is an undercurrent of “Why can’t you just move on?” leveled at the kids in a world eager to purge the memory of that darkness and what happened to them by destroying the camps, “retraining” PSFs, etc. What’s happening in the world mirrors what’s happening inside of Zu on a smaller scale.

In survival situations (and we see Ruby and the others doing this as well), I think you learn to compartmentalize and push these things down to keep going, but I thought it was really important for Zu to finally acknowledge that aspect of herself. When she talks about the vase and kintsugi, she’s not saying that she’s a better or more beautiful person for having suffered, or that she’s mended, or that trauma is totally responsible for making her who she is today (though, clearly, trauma and hardship does affect us in major ways)--it’s her acknowledging that she shouldn’t feel like it’s a part of herself she needs to hide, or ignore, or feel ashamed of. Like you said, she has to reclaim who she is.

There's a scene in Never Fade, where Ruby senses someone following her after she leaves the locker room. Who was that?

I don’t think I ever decided it was anyone specific, just a League agent.

Do you have a job besides writing?

I am lucky enough to be able to write full time, but I had a day job for about five years in the publishing industry and wrote the whole TDM series on the weekends.

What are you working on at the moment?

I’m drafting a YA book based on a proposal I came up with earlier this year and waiting on edits for a WIP I’m calling LORE at the moment, which is an urban fantasy set in NYC and involves Greek mythology. I have a lot of free time this summer, so my goal is to create as much as possible and just have fun with the stories.
