Lord Byron had his Cambridge friends up for a farewell house party. Since Newstead had formerly been an abbey, the motif was monastic. The guests dressed as monks, Byron as the abbot, though conventual discipline was relaxed in many particulars, especially in regard of the housemaids. They drank from a skull which had been found in the garden and which Byron had had mounted as a wassail bowl. Years later, when the Byronic legend had flowered, several French biographers asserted that the skull was that of one of his former mistresses.
