Maura doesn’t remember Daniel, but in the last scene she asks him, “Will you be there when I wake up?” and she smiles softly when he says that he will. The man that she hardly knows, that she doesn’t remember, but she takes peace in believing that he will be with her on the other side of this dream.
Because time after time after time she has seen how he had run after her, tried to protect her, did everything in his power to save her. Risked breaking reality to rescue her. Changed the entire coding of their world just to give her an escape route. He didn’t say, let’s escape so we can be together again and live our happy married life again. He didn’t force that hope or expectation on her. He desperately wished for her to remember him and their family, but that wasn’t why he came for her. All he ever wanted, from beginning to the end, was to bring her back to the sunlight. Even if they could never go back to the way things were.
She doesn’t know him anymore, doesn’t love him, but she knows this about him: he loves her.
