Changes

For as long as I can remember, I’ve always had trouble with the concept of changes. I like routines, however irregular they might be. I blossom in the idea of patterns repeating, however chaotic they tend to seem. Those past few years have not been kind to me in that regard, and now I’m faced with everything I surrounded myself with leaving, ending in the slowest way possible. Often people compare those switches in life to the turning of a page. But when doing so, ending a chapter and moving on to the next, it still is the same book, with similar characters. This does not feel like the same book anymore. Right now, it feels like I just ended book one, and started the second tome, where I know some of the characters, and yet it is different.

I am not a student anymore, after twenty-three years of life, no one is waiting for me. My childhood bedroom is long gone by now, and I have very little to return to. But if I’m being really honest here, I’ve already been through a gallery of different versions of myself. First, there was the bold and sensible kid. She was bitten up pretty bad by life and I often found myself thinking about her, hoping she is proud of us now. Then the lonely, secretive and withdrawn teen came to the scene, taking control as we realize everything that was not okay, she helped in a way, but I am glad she went quiet. Really, it amazes me, how fast it can all change. How everything just shifts, in a blink of an eye. For me, 2020 was the year of collision and collapsing; 2021 then came with its reconstructive forces; and 2022 feels like a blossoming spring, full of colors. Not that long ago, I was that sad teen, who believed the only person she could count on was herself. Now I learned – and still do – to open up and get in touch with long-buried feelings.

Now I am left looking at this brand-new book cover, unable to understand what the content of its pages might be, frightened to get the first pick inside. Soon enough, I’ll officially be graduating. Soon enough, I’ll have to open that new tome and get through those brand-new chapters, where everything is the same, and yet everything changed.

Today it’s been exactly one year, one year since you’re gone. One year sonce you decided that your life ws not worth living. One year since you decided that being gay was the absolute evil you could not let your mother being hurt by. I am deeply sorry that your beautiful sixteen year old self was not accepted by the only woman you ever loved

You were, without a doubt the most amazing, kind and innocent personn I have ever had the chance to talk to, and i regret that I did not get to learn to know you more. Today i went by the edge of the Seine, and lit a candle for you and for every lgbt+ kids who made the same choice as you. You made me realize that i had to fight even the slightest thing, even if it s a lost cause, because we deserve better than that and we should be allowed to be happy and love who we want to

So thank you Ethan Jackman

It's been 5 years now, I hope you found the peace you were looking for. We still think about you a lot, even tho pain lessen, it's sweeter now

You had an enormous impact, however little time you had. You're still the most beautiful soul I had the honor to meet

Love you and Remember you always Ethan ♡

Sad things you can do in a book other than killing of a character

Character death is sad, but it also has huge consequences on your plot that can’t be reversed. Not to mention, depending on your genre, character deaths are often reserved for later in the series as a way of telling the reader that things are getting serious.

So, until that moment, here’s a quick list of things you can do to tug at your readers emotions:

1.- Destruction of an item of value. For this to work you’re going to have to set this up early on, it could be a childhood toy they need to sleep at night, a necklace they swear gives them good luck, and old family trinket or any number of things. The important thing is you show just how important it is to the character, make them happy and excited just to talk about it. Later on your character will feel loss and so will the audience.

2.- Arguing. Two characters with a strong bond arguing can be heartbreaking, even if you know the argument is going to resolve itself eventually, going from cuddles and banter to cold looks and the silent treatment, can easily hurt the audience just as much as the characters.

3.- Betrayal. When well done, it’s worst than character death. When you as a reader fall head over heels in love with a character, only for them to betray the rest, it’s heartbreaking, especially if when you read back the foreshadowing was there. It was so obvious yet you were all so blind! As blind as the other characters. Also, unlike character death, they’re still there, there to taunt you with their mere existence.

4.- Failure. We have probably all felt that emptiness, that feeling as the world crumbles around us, haplessness, when we failed an exam in school or just couldn’t get the house clean in time for that visit. Take that feeling and reflect it into your characters, it doesn’t have to be an exam, it can be anything, a task they’re parents asked them to do and they tried their best, a mission, anything. Just let them fail and feel the world crumble.

5.- Being forced to stay behind. Following from point four, if a character is not good enough they can be left behind, perhaps it comes from a place of love, an attempt to protect them from enemies too strong, yet it still hurts. Perhaps they haven’t failed, perhaps they are left behind for another reason, because they are “too valuable”, or because they’ll be more useful back home. Either way, watching those close to you go of to fight for what you believe in, without you, can be painful.

6.- Finding out something they believed in was a lie. It can be something relatively insignificant, an assumption they never bothered to question. Or something world shattering. Allow me to offer up an example with an unimportant spoiler from my second book (it’s not even out yet but oh well): in this book, while talking about some law, Henry realises his daughter believes he and her mother were married. This is an assumption Itazu made and never questioned. It affects nothing, nothing changes, yet finding out her mother and her father were not the happy married couple she’d always pictured, it’s painful.

This could also be something huge, finding out you’re adopted for example.

7.- History. Oh, history, how depressing it can be. And if you have a fantasy world you have many opportunities to go into this. From slaughters to slavery, finding out how society got to where it is, the base on which it is built. Well, it’s pretty depressing. Obviously be careful how much inspiration you take from real world history and always be respectful and do your research!

8.- Scarring. An injury can be painful, it can be scary. And depending on what caused it, leave you with traumatising memories. Now add to that a physical visible reminder on your skin you can never remove. Well, that can be pretty horrible. Imagine the scar came from a battle the protagonist longs to forget, but can’t because every night before going to sleep they can’t help but glance at their arm where the nasty scars forever lies.

As usual,  check out my book, stories I’ve written plus other social medias: here.

This another post I could probably do a part two on someday. Can you think of any books where any of these are done effectively? Do any of these happen in your owns book? Please tell me! I love hearing from you all.

hi! i hope your having a good day. i just wanted to know if you had any advice for writing a betrayal and making it feel impactful?

Hi :)

Sure, here is my advice for you:

How to write betrayal

Betrayal can be a good plot twist for your character and for your reader. If it's done right, it can be surprising and highly emotional.

Reasons for betrayal

  • personal gain/greed
  • ex. money, status, power, etc.
  • fear
  • jealousy or envy

Types of traitors

  • the bad guy - you always knew they would eventually betray you
  • the weak one - the person is not strong enough to stand by your side or strong enough to resist temptation
  • the climber - this one wants to gain something from the betrayal and wants to climb the social ladder - and for that they need to step on you
  • the good guy - they're trying to actually help you, even if it means they have to betray your trust
  • the conflicted - they don't want to hurt you, but they have a very good reason for their betrayal

How to make it impactful

two things: not seing it coming and being close to the traitor

  • show how much the character trusts the traitor, how they confide in them and believe them to be on their side
  • or show that the betrayed would have never even considered that the traitor could betray them, so the betrayal is a complete shock to them

Why does it hurt so much?

  • they lose a person close to them
  • their memories with them are tainted now
  • they second-guess all their past interactions
  • it disturbs their sense of trust with everyone, because if even someone they trusted could betray them, then what is stopping anyone else
  • it confuses their instincts, since they didn't see it coming

I hope this helps and have a good day!

Teasing Dialogue

  1. "You look so cute when you're all disheveled."
  2. "I can see how much you want to kiss me."
  3. "Oh, you know you love me."
  4. "Do I sense some jealousy?"
  5. “Aww, you’re blushing. I like that look on you.”
  6. "You know I love to tease you."
  7. "Should I hold your hand?"
  8. "Move!" "Aww, but you're so comfortable."
  9. “You flirt in the most awkward situations.” “You know you love it.”
  10. "Well, how do you like my outfit?" "You're hardly wearing anything."
  11. "Never seen you look at me like that before."
  12. “I think your parents may like me even more than you.”
  13. "Aww, are you getting shy now?"
  14. "Why do you always have to be so cute when you're frowning?"
  15. “Annoying you is what I’m best at.”
  16. "Stop that broody look and come over here."

  21. “Do you like what you see?” “You know I always do.”
  22. "Not everyone can look as good as me... but you come close."
  23. “Are you trying to flirt with me?” “Yes. Is it working?”
  24. "Being cute cannot save you from everything."
  25. "Your heart is beating too fast to be close to someone you don't care about."

Do you have any prompts about a superhero fighting a supervillain, but as the fighting goes on, the villain seems… less of a villain and is making some very good points in their monologue?

Hero + Villain Dialogue

The villains makes good points

  • "They lied to you, Hero. And I may be a villain, but I tell you the harsh truth."
  • "You should know what exactly it is that you're fighting for."
  • "The world is not as black and white as you would like it to be, Hero."
  • "You're not that righteous. You're not fighting the good fight. No matter what they tell you."
  • "Is this really the hill you want to die on, Hero? Because I'm willing to do it for my cause."
  • "You're unsure, Hero. I can see it."
  • "You should never be unsure about what you go to war for."
  • "I can see in your eyes that you know exactly what I am talking about."
  • "How can you fight for something that you don't believe in?"
  • "People are going to die, no matter what. But their death should not be pointless. It should be for the right cause."
  • "You're their attack dog. You're only helping them by getting rid of me."
  • "Even if you win, this will not be over. Someone else will take my place. Because someone needs to fight for this."

Have fun!

hi! not sure if this makes sense for a prompt but i love very character driven stories with little plot but complicated, interesting characters. so i was wondering if you could think of any scenarios or characteristics that i could use to write about a complicated character and really explore them? thanks!

Hi :)

Not a prompt, but ideas for you.

Character Study

Show them struggling. Show them struggle with a smaller problem and with a bigger problem. Show how different they react to it. Show their complicated relationships with the people around them. Not just close friends, romantic partners and family - show an unusual in fiction, but very natural relationship the character has with someone at work, or the cashier at the supermarket they always go to, or their mailman. Give them something to cry about and something to laugh about. Show them at their best and at their lowest point. Show them feeling exhausted. Show them at a point where they feel unsure about how to feel. Let them make a decision and show their decision-making process. Show a completely normal day in their life and show one that is full of surprises - good or bad.

Exploring a character is about finding yourself in that character in some aspects and feeling completely different in some others. To show that they are not just one layer, you need to show them react differently do different scenerios, sometimes even to the same one. How we act depends a lot on our current state of mind and how we feel. Show that they are not perfect and are able to change and always do.

Here’s a little drawing of Nova!

She’s like 7’5, and the sweetest person you’ll ever meet! She a little self conscious about her looks but very confident about her personality. She’s like the big sister of the group, always there to listen and give advice (or a big bear hug) when needed 🥰🪐
