he also trusted people who answered to an studio and network execs, he even said it himself that there’s people from higher up that push and want certain things and they end up having to answer to and service those needs

he worked in TV, he knew how the business worked, he spoke about it at a talk with my writers class years ago about the exact reasons why he walked away from doing TV to do writing for for books and later ASOIAF in the first place, he should have known how things would go, and he should have known never to give away the rights without having the full thing completed, he should not have been naive about the TV business that he knew full well how it worked, he was literally telling us young writers about that very thing, so he should have known

even if they were supposed to be book fans, those two still have to adhere to a certain audience and the suits who pay them

he should have known better than to trust the business

he should have focused on writing his books and getting them done instead of getting involved with the TV production and all those things that came along with it, especially when he knew it would affect his writing process

if he had finished those books before giving out the rights, he could have at least focused and directed the show towards the conclusion he wanted but he took it with chance and risked the materials floundering without a path to the ending, he put himself in a place where literally no author/adaptation has ever been put in before - an adaptation getting to the ending before the source material did

he should have never risked that, especially when he knew how his writing process was never going to be as fast like other authors might be

maybe this is just me, but I expected him to know better, there he was years ago telling us advice about the business when he wasn’t even listening to those same advice - he put himself in this unfavorable situation when he knew better, knew the risks, and chose to still take the risks like hopping in front of an oncoming train

all the posts about GRRM feeling sad about GoT ending and how it could have been different and i’m just...sorry, I have no sympathy

instead of feeling sad, maybe you should have finished the fucking books, George

you had plenty of years to get the books out and have it done but you wallowed and waited and turned your focus on other things

you’ve worked in TV, you knew how things would go, and yet you still decided to naively risk it and give away the rights before you were even done with the books

i don’t feel bad about the show surpassing you, i don’t feel bad that they’re gonna do an ending that’s not what you envisioned because guess what, maybe they would have done what you wanted had you figured out already what you wanted and wrote the fucking books before you gave away the rights to make the show

the only people i have sympathy for are the book fans who have been waiting so long for a satisfying ending to the stories they loved

and quite honestly at this rate with your involvement in all those prequels and other stuff, i’m not holding much high hopes that you’re even gonna deliver for those book fans what they wanted

the only reason i hope you do is that i don’t want the book fans to be disappointed twice

just fucking get the books done, George, stop getting distracted by whatever new thing pops up or because you have write when you feel it’s right, JUST FUCKING WRITE THE BOOKS ALREADY YOU’VE LITERALLY HAD YEARS

if it doesn’t work for someone and they don’t like it, then they don’t have to like it, it’s that fucking simple

and if you like something they don’t like, well guess what, you can continue to like it all you want, just because someone doesn’t agree or doesn’t like something doesn’t mean you have to not like it, you can easily block or unfollow or post on your own damn blog about how much you love it
